Interesting process, sounds like you have been doing this for a while and figured out what works and does not. I would like to see your end product in action.
Go from "trying to make it a habit" to making it a rule. PPE in pyro is especially important as any failure can be catastrophic. Sure, chemical inhalation seems innocuous but over time can be pretty nasty. If your PPE protocol is not a hard and fast rule, the one time you don't may well be the time that you wish you had.
I like the way you do your stuff , plain and simple, other pyros make you believe that you’re dealing with radioactive stuff pretty much when making strobe or whistle fuels , I think they’re exaggerating a little , just in case I use a respirator when dealing with dichromate , other than that good job Caleb!! I’m learning a lot from you Thanks!!!
Way late but I’d def be wearing a respirator as they are cheap with the correct rated filters. Protect against those solvents as well. I have issues with burn pit exposures in Mosul and wouldn’t want to add to it.
Wear a mask when handling that dichromate and dont use the same spoon for the chemicals without thoroughly washing it before scooping the next ingredient! Please be careful
@James Zachary YES there is need. If you get fuel in the oxidizer, while storing it in a plastic container, that's a good recipe for a house fire. As for the mask, dichromate causes cancer. It's notorious for it. The only reason why I could see you say "no need" is because you don't know it
Any particular reason to use potassium rather than ammonium dichromate? Or is it just what was available to whoever devised the formula? So the dichromate is used directly in the comp rather than to pre-treat the magnallium? What metal is the sieve made of? I'm guessing aluminum would be best for being non-sparking, not attacked by ammonium perchlorate, and not acting galvanically with the magnallium.
Some great videos. I still have a little trouble trying to get the amount I need to make the different parts of chemicals. Could you show me or make a video on how you do your math to come up with the amount a person wants to make. I know on these three lb rockets it takes a lot of fuel to press in. This is the way I do it. Say I want a lb. I multiply 16 oz,s times the part. Like 60 parts times 16 equals. Then what pops up is what I use to make 16 ozs. Thanks much woody for the videos and any help you could give me.
Why dont you use a respirator when dealing with potassium dichromate? Im asking a legitimate curious question because i thought its carcinogenic and toxic. Also, how do you safely mill potassium dichromate? Thanks Caleb, love your tools!
Use a blade mill in a well ventilated area or outdoors to mill dichromate, and yes a respirator is 100% recommended. You should get an N100 acid and lead dust particulate filter
I really like this flashing horn And I'm Vietnamese and I really want to learn it from you. Can you tell me the recipe and ingredients to make that type of flashing? I hope you can share with me some documents for reference about it.
What is the purpose of the Vaseline? Also i know what mesh sizes mean (how big or small the particle size is) but my question in regards to it, is why the 200 mesh is just stated as 200 mesh, and the 325 mesh is stated as -325 mesh? Sorry if my question doesn't make any sense. Basically i'm asking if there is a difference in mesh sizes and if so what the difference is when there is a - in front of the particle size. Also, nice video! You make some pretty damn cool rockets and your precision is very good!
Honestly I kind of get it but it still doesn't make sense to me and it's super confusing. Because the way mesh works is, the higher the mesh # the smaller the particle size, the lower the mesh # the bigger the particle size. What I don't understand is where this - mesh comes into play. It's confusing because - mesh means a smaller particle size. But that's the opposite of the mesh scale. Because basically since forever - means a lower number and + means a higher number. So it doesn't make too much sense, for instance -200 mesh means a smaller particle size which would mean a higher number than 200. But that's the opposite of what - is supposed to mean. - is supposed to mean a lower mesh number which would mean a bigger particle size. It make more sense if it's was +200. Instead of -200. I don't know why they made it like that, It confused the hell out of me in the beginning.
@patman0250 the larger number in mesh sizing is more of a reference to how many lines per inch the screen has. More lines per inch makes smaller particles. Particle size can have effect on packing density, uniformity, surface area, and burn characteristics
Caleb, could I use nc Laquer made using green dot? Vs the laquer you used? I don’t know where to get the nc pellets anymore? Or do you have a source? I heard you mention Skylighter but I know that’s a no go today! Thanks
Since I posted this reply I did hear of some folks receiving NC laquer from Firefox. I just make my own nitrocellulose lacquer from smokeless powder and was wondering if that would be comparable to what he used? So it is still available if you want to go that route
Impossible to get 200 mesh Magnalium over here. Only thing I can buy is 230mesh Magnalium. Will that work too or is it too fine? Great tutorial, helped a lot.
Is mag aluminum the same thing as magnallium? I know magnallium is a bonded melted mixture of the two, or are you using a mixture of magnesium and aluminum? I have some from skylighter and i was just curious.
@@goodmaro Interesting. Did not know that. I know enough to keep me safe but dont know much else about the two together as far as their structural properties. So, magnalium being an alloy, in lamens terms is it basically aluminum and magnesium homogenously melted/forged together? Is it like a 50/50 mixture of the two metals or what kind of ratio is it? Thanks for the previous information and for any future information you share with me.
@@countryboompyro6746 Yes, they're melted together, and 50:50 (by weight, I think, rather than by mole; alloys are not stoichiometric) is one common ratio, although I've seen 65:35 also offered and I think there's a 90:10 commercially available although not as powder or chips so not particularly for pyrotechnics. Magnallium is used mostly to give some of the pyro properties of magnesium powder with almost as much stability as aluminum. I think it's still unstable to alkali, but boric acid is said NOT to be useful in stabilizing magnallium against alkaline attack, because with the magnesium in there it would also be susceptible to acid reaction.
ya that stuff is really toxic to breaht and to the skin but handing well and care about it and you will be fine always ware a mask if you can or do it in a well ventialated area
Hey I have a question. What would you say is a ball park estimate on the price of a 10lb strobe rocket single stage in regards to the fuel?
