  • Here's a fun little project for you all! goo.gl/MBLLh7 I made this as a Christmas gift for a friend but due to being busy with a new job(installing robots) I have not gotten it edited and uploaded until now. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and happy New Year!
    You should totally make one of these! They are so easy to make. I made this in less than an hour with simple tools at my local makerspace, HackPGH. You could probably make due with a battery drill instead of a drill press and a miter box and hand saw instead of a tablesaw. The wood I used is a piece of Black Locust off the firewood pile but you could use anything. Black Locust is a really beautiful wood. It is super hard and takes a fantastic shine when sanded a little. I also made an oak box but the Black Locust looked so much better, in my opinion. Just a lot more character to the wood grain and the weathered outside. The 1/8 inch brass rod can be bought at most hardware stores or ordered on Amazon. I finished it with Teak Oil which I love because it soaks in and drys so it's not sticky or oily, if done properly(excess must be wiped off after 15 min). You could use a bigger or smaller forstner bit as well. Just go with whatever seems right for the piece of wood you have. Be sure to not make the walls too thin or it'll split apart when boring. An idea a friend had was to add a magnet to keep it closed. I didn't have any magnets of the right size at the time of making the video so I didn't do this but I think it would be really cool.(Thanks for the idea Dave!)

    As a young person who has no idea what I'm doing, I thank you for this wonderful tutorial. I made this little thing and I'm so proud.

      +ZAMIN'S WORLD once I move my stuff into my new apartment. I got a job in York PA installing robots and have been living out of a hotel. Little hard to run an IC engine in a hotel room! I'll get it done as soon as I can! Thank you for sticking around! :)

      +mr. necercis my friend Dave at HackPGH suggested that but unfortunately I didn't have a small enough one on hand at the time of doing the project. Great idea for future boxes tho! Thank you!

    I never knew you were a wood worker, it must be easy with all the stuff you know. I really enjoyed this video. I would love to see more videos like this for the regular Joe’s who aren’t experienced enough to work on engines yet. Thanks for doing what you do, keep it up!

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  6 років тому

      +Sari Sbai haha I wouldn't quit consider myself a woodwork! I think: Multi Material Worker would be more accurate! :P I also don't know that much haha! I just know a good bit of random things and I'm good at making it look like I know a lot!(video editing and cutting out bloopers helps a lot) I think when it comes to making things the thing that makes the biggest difference is how willing you are to jump in and get your hands dirty. You can think and design for days and days perfecting all the possible ways to make a box like this or you can do like I do and to try making it a few minutes after it pops into your head. How willing are you to fail is a big part. If the first box idea failed I had some other ideas I would have tried instead so it didn't matter if the first idea was junk. I'll try to throw in some easier projects like this! Thank you for your feedback! :)

    That staining with the Teak Oil really made it look nice.
    Cool design, I just might make one one day.
    Happy New Years MakerJ. :)

      +Binj Komisar I know right!! Do it! And use magnets to keep it closed. I unfortunately didn't have any small enough when I made mine.

      +Eleanor Martin woah dang! Someone remembers that project!! Funny thing, I actually restored it last month and have all the footage. I tested it and it worked great but I didn't have my camera for the test and I haven't been able to take it for a second run.

    Loosing touch dude. . . . . from engines to this ????????????????????????? Inspiration would suggest you build a valved 2 stroke engine. . . . . I did, thanks to your original concept. . . . . .ignore the critics, you have more support in followers then critics, it's just they choose to voice their opinions, were as the rest of us are just waiting for the next installment of awesome...........

      +Leon Boerkamp I should have an apartment by the end of the month and then it could be another week or two. So hopefully not too long. 😊

      Makerj101 Nice, are you then gonna continue with your compressor engine? And how is it going with the first one? I haven't seen it for a while.🤔

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  6 років тому

      +Leon Boerkamp That is the plain!! I kinda forgot about the copper pipe engine to be honest. I never really concluded that series. I will consider revisiting that.
