wow I've seen the movie many times and I never noticed the 3 year gap for the legal gambling age of 21.
The writer has said in the past that psycho rich biff was based on trump!
The problem is that you're looking back on 2015. When i saw this in the 80s, i saw a ton of things that didn't exist. Flat tvs that hang on the wall, smart house computers you talk to, finger print locks, camera drones, fast food kiosks, kids using wearable/ mobile devices at the table. They guessed so much of the world we live in

I did something fun with this film that can never be duplicated. On October 21st, 2015, I watched BTTF 2. I timed it so that the exact moment Doc, Marty, and Jennifer travel to the future (4:29pm) it would be the same exact time in real life. So, basically, when they arrive in October 21st, 2015 at 4:29pm, it was that exact date and time in real life. It was surreal.

BttF II was my favorite movie growing up so I was always looking forward to that date and what the future would hold. If I could, I would've watched the movie on the date as well. Instead I was in the hospital getting diagnosed with MS. -_-
On October 21, 2015 they showed the trilogy in the movie theatres back to back to back. It was the best time ever. They had giveaways, showed bonus features between the films, like the trailer for Jaws 19. We were treated like royalty, it was great.
Not gonna even lie. I've been watching this movie since a kid and just now realized that Marty McFly's daughter was played by Michael J. Fox 😭

For the ones that don't know, the reason they changed the actress was because Claudia Wells mother was diagnosed with cancer, which made her put her acting career on hold.
And it was a big hiatus, from 86 to 2011.

The one prediction about 2015 they almost got completely right was the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series. They were actually off by only one year (they won in 2016), which is an amazing prediction in itself since at the time this movie was made (1989), the Cubs had not won the World Series since 1908!
People always get fixated on the flying cars and the hoverboard not being real, but they got several other stuff right, including flat screens, caller ID, video calls, screens everywhere around the house and kids not letting go of their personal devices, voice activated home assistants (like Alexa or Siri), videogames where you don't need to use controls (those with cameras that register your body's movements), among a few other things. They weren't really _that_ far off except with the propulsion stuff that makes everything fight gravity a real possibility. They also didn't predict Princess Diana's death, obviously (newspaper scene).
@@Palmieres Predicting the near future is actually very easy. Especially if it's a span of 100 years or less. Ask someone to predict 1000 years or more and they'll get everything wrong.
As for the sporting part, sometimes life imitates art. Young fans of the film might have grown up wanting to win with the Cubs in 2015. They could have become baseball players and that prediction almost became reality.

The 1000 years thing reminds me of the cleverness of the show Futurama. Whenever they show you a good prediction in the 1000 years Fry is in stasis from 2000 to 3000, it generally happens closer to the year 3000. Whenever there is a terrible tragedy such as aliens invading Earth, generally closer to the year 2000...
So according to Futurama we have some bad times before they get better.
@@Palmieres They also got the existence of the internet right. When old Biff pays for his cab fare with his thumb print, there has to be some kind of internet connection in order to make the transaction work instantly.
And Nike invented the same trainers/sneakers from the film
30+ years later and I still catch bits of the plot that I didn’t fully recognize in the 1000 times I’ve seen this movie lol. One of the greatest trilogies ever!
@@bcn1gh7h4wk oh wow. Yeah, because they debate on when they have to go back in order to erase the alternate timeline. It took Marty talking to rich Biff about the almanac to establish when old Biff gave it to young Biff. That’s crazy, I’ll have to watch again, but you may have just found a hole in the plot that I never thought existed. If the yellow one was the last time jump, Doc should’ve known when they needed to go back in the first place.

The whole "there's only one man who can help me?" sequence is one of my favourite moments in cinema.
It just so perfectly captures how fun these films are.
Actually, the movie's portrayal of 2015 got quite a few things accurately: the fax machine (somewhat outdated now but weren't "new" in 2015), video chat, watching multiple channels, 3D movies, "endless" sequels (Jaws 19), keyless entry, they actually made those shoes with power laces for real and you could buy them for a brief time, probably a few other things I'm forgetting. And the rest are not exactly right, but are closely related. For instance, we don't have hover boards, but we have automated scooters, handle-less segues, Amazon is working on delivery by way of drone, we're currently working on self-driving cars (I imagine it won't be too long before we have self-walking dogs). Though, honestly, I don't think anyone back in the 80s really thought we'd have flying cars. That was the decade I grew up in, and while it was a fantasy, I think as a culture we instinctively knew that wasn't possible, not by 2015 anyway.
It's mostly the punchline to a joke setup. Originally, the makers of the film ended the first part with the flying car as a "wink" to the audience, and weren't planning any sequels. But because the audience loved it and were kinda forced to make a sequel (or two), they HAD to follow through with what they and done. Otherwise, they wouldn't have done it that way, maybe. They've even said as much - Jennifer wouldn't have gotten in the car if they knew they were making sequels, which is why she's not part of the plot too much.
Yep, about the only thing that hasn't come to fruition yet is flying cars.
Made me think of that old IBM commercial back in the early 2000s starring Avery Brooks (Cap. Sisko from Star Trek DS9).
He is walking on the Brooklyn bridge asking the question, "It is the year 2000! Where are my flying cars? Where? I was promised flying cars!"
And then he refers to the power of IBM computers and how flying cars are not needed to get work done.
To be fair, the movie didn't predict the shoes. The shoes were made because of the movie.
Don’t forget the sports angle. The Chicago Cubs won the World Series in 2016, which was one year off from this movie’s prediction. They hadn’t won the Series since 1908, longest drought in history. Also, they were accurate on a MLB team being renamed to Miami, who are now known as the Miami Marlins. Crazy accuracy there!
Edit: I first stated an MLB team “moved” to Miami, but realized they were already in Miami, just called the Florida Marlins and renamed to the Miami Marlins. It was just funny back then hearing a “Miami” team in MLB.
We’ve had flying car prototypes as early as the 1930s. They’ve been around. They’ve just never hit the mainstream. And honestly I can’t imagine allowing the average citizen to fly unless it’s far more automated. You thought automobile crashes were bad now? How about mid-air or into someone’s house?
@@DavidRomigJr Lol, same here. It was a nice dream but there are far too many safety and security concerns that come with being able to fly where ever you want. Even with automation.
When BTTF came out, we didn't know there was going to be a sequel. In other words, we really weren't waiting 4 years. They did a good job of refreshing the memory by opening the film with the same closing scene, and rolled it back a bit.
We were waiting 3.5 years, though, because the VHS with "To Be Continued..." added to the end was released in May 1986 and Part II didn't come out until November 1989.

The fax machine from the Japanese boss in 2015 is actually one of THE MOST ACCURATE things in the whole movie. Anybody who has spent any time at all in Japan knows that Japanese STILL uses faxes to this very day.

I think it is in BTTF 3 that Doc and Marty exchange their lines on one occasion. Marty says, "Great Scott!" and the Doc says, "This is heavy!".
Thomas F. Wilson as Biff is my favorite character in all these, his role in the 3rd is his best performance in my opinion. He is the complete opposite in real life such a nice guy, I've been watching these movies since I was 6 and still to this day I enjoy it just as much! Growing up in the 80s was such a great time I sure miss it!
He was a great actor who should have had a much better career but his part in these three films were a major part of what made them a success

Robert Zemeckis later said that if he had any plans for a 2nd movie, he never would have had Jennifer get into the DeLorean at the end of the 1st movie.
Fun fact: In 1955 when Biff and his grandma are yelling at each other. It was Biff who was doing the voice of his grandma...

I think you're the only reactor to know who Flea is (at least that I've seen) and recognize him. That was quick on Samantha's part to hear and realize that quick clip mentioning that Lorraine's last name was McFly before she married Biff.

Flea (Douglas J Needles) is Marty's bully. They were friends as kids but Doug started bullying Marty in high school and dared him to steal a vacuum tube for his guitar amp from Doc's lab. Doc had spread rumors that he was a crazy person so people wouldn't snoop around his house. Marty broke in and Doc caught him, then he hired Marty as a lab assistant. Without Needles, and Marty being afraid of being called chicken, the movie wouldn't have happened. ( i got this info from the comics and the time machine haynes manual
29:05 Fun fact: One of the early ideas for the script didn't even involve a return to 1955. They initially wanted to go back to the 60s to explore what Marty's parents were like then. Of course, then they had the idea of revisiting the events of the first film, and the rest is history.
29:50 They actually pioneered a lot of the techniques that they used to fit the same actor in more than once. If I recall correctly they had to invent a special camera specifically for the dinner table scene in 2015 since Michael J Fox was playing 3 characters at once.
33:02 Another fun fact: At one point the producers made a joke about hoverboards being real and that they just hadn't hit the market yet. A lot of kids wrote letters to Mattel asking for hoverboards in the late 80s and early 90s.
the hoverboard thing, it had been the behind the scene doc that came out just after this one was out. the host made a comment that the boards were in development. it was supposed to be a joke, but a large number of fans thot it was true. after 3 came out there was another behind the scene doc released covering the whole trilogy. the host of that one actually apologized for the comment in the last video and said the boards didn't exist.
I'm reminded that USA Today PRINTED that cover on their newspaper on that date in 2015 as a souvenir issue.
Also, the robot waiters in Cafe 80s was inspired by the 80s “Max Headroom” show. I REALLY wish Universal Studios would do a future Hill Valley.

Hard to believe this one was considered a failure when it was released. It’s aged incredibly well and has become a classic along with the trilogy as a whole.
It was deemed inferior but not a failure.
Marty's daughter was using VR glasses. So, they kinda got that right.
VR was already well known by the time of the movie, Sega announced VR glasses just 2 years after the movie(albeit they later cancelled the product). Nintendo released the 'Virtual Boy' in 1995, which was seemingly based on ideas from the 80s. Naturally they were pretty limited compared to modern iterations though, though a lot of that isn't just the VR display itself, but the computing required to generate the imagery.
Primitive versions have been around since the 50s and 60s.
At the time, holographs were expected to be big too. I can remember playing a 'holographic' video game in the early to mid 90s, albeit it was using a normal display with mirrors etc to cheat to create a similar effect, rather than a true holograph. It did look pretty cool though!
Also the drone taking pictures of the scene for the newspaper.
@@DoubleMonoLR Virtual Boy was hardly wearable. A better analogy to this might be Google Glass. She seems like she's watching something rather than playing something. Of course, the real reason she's wearing them is to make it easier to use a stand-in when another Fox character is in the scene.

Thomas Furness, VR/AR pioneer, had a background in creating visual displays ascending to 1966. He succeeded in fundraising for a prototype system to be fabricated at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. The Visually Coupled Airborne Systems Simulator (VCASS) was presented in 1982.
In 1981 Michael McGreevy (NASA’s Ames Research Center) began a research program in dimensional information transfer at NASA, accentuating the interpretation of 3-D displays. In 1984 to craft a resembling system for NASA called a virtual workstation. In the issue, they developed the Virtual Interface Environment Workstation (VIEW). It was the first system that combined computer graphics and video imaging, 3-D sound, voice recognition and synthesis, and an HMD. The system was supplemented by a data glove.
1987 : Eyephone HMD (Jaron Lanier, Visual Programming Lab)
Originally the term “virtual reality” was offered by Jaron Lanier in 1987 upon saturated research activity into this technological form.
Video phone calls, widescreen flat screens, drones, thumbprint identification, color newspapers, mobile electronic payment, robotic café employees, keyless entry, voice activated electronic devices. Apart from the obvious, I'd say the predictions in technology were pretty accurate.
Such a solid trilogy!

@@TBRSchmitt Well most critics at least, maybe not viewers consider part 2 the weakest of the trilogy, so if you go by that logic you should enjoy 3 even more than 2. I actually love all 3 movies equally since they are meant to be a complete story (even if they never originally planned on this being a trilogy) and as you say in the review, they intertwined the 1st movie so well in the 2nd and then the 3rd is like a complete 180 more or less setting wise. It's just great stuff. I still hold out hope we'll get a new Back to the Future at some point, but it'd have to have a new cast nowadays. Maybe Marty's kids could be the focus as main characters or something.

I love Doc's face when Marty asks him if he and Jennifer become assholes in the future. Like he has to double check himself before answering 😆
... which he didn't do at the end of the first one. Lorraine also didn't pause between the words 'interesting' and 'music' in the first one, either (George and Marty also wave to each other earlier this time, and there was also no applause for Marty when he left the stage, either).

GREAT video! I'm a massive BTTF fan and I was so happy seeing you experience the movies for the first time. A bit of information regarding the year 2015 in the movies, the writer and director stated that they were not trying to "predict" how 2015 would be. They knew they would be way off, but what they were trying to do was to present a "clean and hopeful" future (Although the DID get some things right! Like video calls, smart glasses, and the Cubs did win the World Series! Though that happened one year later, in 2016!). Back in the day, all movies about the future like Blade Runner always presented a dark, dirty, distopian future. With BTTF Part 2, they wanted to do the opposite, they wanted to show a brighter future, to try and be original about it instead of doing what everyone else was doing with the "future" at the time.

He was so underrated in all of these. Popcorn movies like this are only as good as their villains.
It's pretty much a miracle that this film turned out as well as it did. The first film's ending was never meant to actually lead into a sequel, so they had to come up with a whole story from scratch built off a very specific scenario of Marty and Jennifer going to the future to fix something involving their kids. The filmmakers had zero idea what to do with Jennifer and ended up just putting her to sleep for most of the film (they've since said they never would have put her in the car if they'd actually intended to do a sequel), and even couldn't come up with any way to make a whole film out of the future setting, so it ends up just being an unusually lengthy setup for the main story. Plus, Crispin Glover refused to come back so they were limited to using clips of George from the first film, unable to have the new Marty interfere at all in his story. But despite all that, the movie is still a blast and a worthy followup to the original.
When this and III were produced - the camera work, using the same actor in the same scene, was really cutting edge stuff. Still holds up pretty well, I think.
Watched this in the theater when I was a kid. As soon as the credits were over, there was a trailer for BTTF 3 that was showed.
Yep, parts 2 and 3 were shot back to back.
At 8:03 the person who fell outside the court house almost died from the stunt because she didn't make it through the window and fell like 30 feet. She had to get a bunch of reconstructive surgery. She was complaining about the safety of it all day because the actual stunt woman actually quit because she knew it was too risky.
The Cubs winning the world series happened a year later. The back to the future series is very cool.
The baseball strike of '94 delayed the Cubs win by one year!
And Miami is in MLB

The Cubs getting kicked out of the playoffs on Back To The Future Day was the most Cubs thing to happen.

Once upon a time....I was coming home from my night shift job when I came upon an area of my neighborhood that was very brightly lit up , I soon discovered they were shooting a scene of BTTF 2. ( the Shotgun porch scene with Stricklin ) It was 1: 00 am and everybody watching left but me so I watched them do the scene about 5 or 6 times. Now when I watch that scene I can imagine my younger self there in that time fully taking it in. I may have been born to be a BTTF fan ....10/04/55 ( 10: 04 ). Great job on the reaction and especially the after talk.
That Butthead Marty Mcfly prevented me from being rich and he's really turning me into a Mad Dog, think I'll go drown my sorrows with a bottle of fine Kentucky Red Eye
While I'm extremely late to this one, and I don't know if anyone else has shared this information, but there's a deleted scene in this movie that I absolutely love. At the scene where old Biff returns to 2015, you see him struggling to get out of the car. In the deleted scene, we see that he is in a load of pain as he collapses next to some garbage cans, then falls over the rest of the way as his body disappears, much like how Marty's started to in the first movie. The directors confirmed that somewhere between 1985 and 2015, Lorraine shot and killed Biff.
"EAT LEAD, SLACKERS!!!!" is like the best line ever, what with the hysterics of it and all.

One of the things I love about this film is that it works whether you assume Biff is dumb and only uses a date programmed into the DeLorean, and also works if Biff is smart enough to recognise that his life took a turn i 1955.
The music in these films is so epic. It was meant for these movies. Nothing else would have fit. Best films ever made.

Missed Jennifer wasn’t Jennifer, and that Marty’s Dad was a different actor too, so hits and misses, there’s soooo much to take in though, it’s nuts.
They did such a crazy good job of including all the parts from the first movie into this one. This one is probably my favorite of the trilogy

The new Jennifer is Elizabeth Shue. She was one of the most popular actresses of the 80s and 90s. Her first film 'Adventures in Babysitting ' is a pop culture classic. She has a long list of great films including Cocktails with Tom Cruse and The Saint with Val Kilmer among many more.
GREAT reaction to my ultimate favourite trilogy ! When I first watched this in 1989 when it came out, I teared up at the beginning out of the excitement .

I felt the same, its so so so awesome to see someone enjoying my favourite movies too. And to see them get excited at the Nike's and Hoverboard, just wow. Back in the day it wasn't standard to set up for trilogies, so 4 years was quite a bit to wait for a 12 year old, and then to read a newspaper clipping that they were filming 2 more, Back to Back, I lost my mind lol.

@@dewjade4897 I’m grossly oversimplifying it but from questioning the script to not being paid enough compared to the other actors, Crispin and Robert zemeckis didn’t see eye to eye. This all lead to him not returning as George. When they recasted him but still used his likeness in BTTF 2 without consulting Crispin it turned into a massive lawsuit.
He demanded a huge amount and then they fell out and they used his character and he tried to sue them
@@-M0LE He didn't just try to sue them, he sued them and won. The suit set a major legal precedent in Hollywood regarding actors' likenesses being used without their permission.
I love how they kind of anticipated that they could never get "the future" right, so they portrayed a version that was just a lot of fun.

The Cubs did win the World Series near 2015 for the first time since 1908. It was only one year off. Also, Miami (the opponent) wasn't a team in 1989 but was a few years later. Just, they wouldn't have played the Cubs in 2015 in the WS bc they are both National League.

Lea Thompson is absolutely brilliant in the trilogy. Each character feels unique and distinct from the others. In the first one her 3 versions of Lorraine were identifiable by voice alone as are all the rest. She carries herself differently each time. The alcoholic mum in the first wasn't overplayed for laughs. It felt very real. This new one has a very almost pathetic way she gets around except when talking about George. I don't think she ever got or gets near enough credit for what she did with those characters.
This trilogy benefited from having an amazing cast that more or less remained intact it each film except for his girlfriend
One thing that always got me, was that Doc (1955 version) knew before he even met Marty (the one in the 80's) all about both of their future adventures from having met Marty already in 1955, so that means the Doc that goes back to 1885 knew he was going to go back to 1885 at some point in his own future. Crazy idea and notion, but yeah. There it is. Doc knew he was going to die in 1985 when he was shot and he also knew at some point he was going to travel back to 1885 as well. I always wondered what happened to the Doc with all that knowledge of future events that Marty leaves back in 1955. The version of Doc that travels back in time to 1885 is still the version we meet in the first movie from 1985, he only freshened his skin up in the future when he went. So it's weird as Hell to think about this story if you TRULY spend the time to think about it! XD
The second and third where filmed back to back, a first I think at that time. It was done because of the time taken to film just one and to keep the characters from looking aged.

@@ckobo84 I suppose because of all the sets that had to be constructed, filming, editing etc. They did it to reduce costs plus as you pointed out, four years between production, No.3 would have been roughly ten years later from the first. Trying to keep Marty looking young would have been difficult.
Superman: The Movie and Superman II were filmed back to back in the late '70s. A bit of trivia: actor Marc McClure is in both franchises -- he played Jimmy Olsen in Superman and Marty's brother, Dave McFly, in BTTF, so he was in two franchises that filmed sequels back to back! (His scene in BTTF II was cut; Marty runs into Dave in 1985A and discovers that he's essentially gone off the rails. The deleted scene can be seen in the special features!) I like to give some love to Marc since he is a friend of mine in real life. :)

The 4 years after BTTF1 was due to Zemeckis being busy w/ Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The sequels were filmed back-to-back b/c they wrote a gigantic script. Part 3 was originally just the last act of Part 2. Hence, it's more like a LOTR trilogy situation.
I like to imagine that Doc and Marty unknowingly caused a butterfly effect that somehow resulted in the future 2015 we see in the film turning into our 2015. Take hoverboards, for example. They have it and so do we, but ours are less advanced and don't actually hover. Maybe they caused technological advancement to slow down, or be redirected into other things, like smartphones. lol
Except the "hoverboards" we have are only called that because of this film, so for that to be true, the film "Back to the Future" has to exist within the world it portrays. Allowing for Marty or Doc to actually watch their own lives in film form.
I love how you guys were discussing about how Marty needed to go back in time but there's no DeLorean and how it was hurting your head lol.

Things they got correct about 2015: Flat screen TVs, this was not around in the 80s and 90s. Multiple channels on the TV, in 1989 unless you had cable, you were limited to about 7 channels. Caller ID, this was not around in the 80s and early 90s. Videoconferencing/facetime, this was not around in the 80s and 90s, though it's been a staple of sci-fi for a long time. Some hints at social media, Needles and Marty's boss has "likes and dislikes" such as food and entertainment.
And don't forget fingerprint technology for every day use: security and payments. The use of what appears to be VR glasses, or Google glasses, by Marty's kids.
Oh, and also Miami didn't have a baseball team.
Hoverboards? Not that the things that exist do what the movie's do, but isn't the name inspired _by_ the movie?

It was very well done, keeping in mind that compositing using a computer wasn't really a thing back then.
Robert Zemeckis was a master at using every type of effect he could. They used a lot of motion-controlled camera stuff in this movie that had never been done before.
(ie. when the same actor is playing multiple parts. A lot of people somehow don't notice that Michael J Fox even plays his own daughter in the future. lol)
There's also the part where both Biffs are in the car together in 1955, and young biff is leaning half out of the car, supposedly because of old Biff's terrible driving. But it was just a way to make it easier to composite the two shots after filming.
A few years after I first saw this movie (so around 1992), a friend at school told me about George McFly not being played by the same actor. I didn't believe him until I got home and read the credits again. lol
There was a lot of drama about that afterwards. Crispin Glover sued the producers, and I think won the case.
So that set a legal precendent to prevent movie studios using an actor's likeness without their permission.
It's a shame it ended up that way, as Crispin Glover is an amazing actor, and I think he lost a lot of work after that.

The wire rigging or something didn't go quite to plan, so she hit the pillar and landed just outside the building.
(instead of landing on the crash mats that were just inside the doors. Ouch.)
13:00 One of the finest special effects shots in cinema history (for its time).
Just the Delorean landing in the street, but the transition is near perfect considering how it was done.
Considering this one was filmed in 1989 came out in 1990 in theaters They did a very good job I can't get over how much the flat screen T.V. on the wall looks like HD T.V.'S today. And Note : Michael J. Fox actually played Marty's Daughter, And Son.
Remember, cutting the same actor in the film in the same scene for more than 1 part was NOT an easy thing in 1985. We take it for granted these days.

BttF II was the last movie made with pre-digital tech to have the same actor in one shot. They exposed the film on one section of the shot, then rearranged things so the other role played by the same actor could be shot on the other side of the film.

Fun Fact... 8:22 .. BTTF showed The Chicago Cubs winning World Series in 2015 , the movie was off only by one year, they actually won in 2016, that's why Marty is so surprised they won in 2015 cause they were "coursed" not to win since I believed 1908 and, also, that Miami had a Baseball team... Watching this reminded me; Technically when Old Biff steals the car in 2015 he would return to the future of the alternate timeline which could:
* Make reality change around Marty, Doc and Jenifer the moment Old Biff goes back
*Make them cease to exist
*Make them become stranded in that 2015...
*Create a paradox changing the future so Biff never comes back with the almanac in the 1st place!

Thomas Wilson, who plays Biff, is apparently a super nice guy in real life. He's also a very gifted artist. The beautiful thing about these movies is everything locks in.

They got 2015 televisions correct. I'm always stunned by that one!
People in their 20s and 30s (I'm the latter) are so used to Christopher Lloyd looking like an old man/mad scientist, the "old age makeup" they established in the original movie (because most of the movie takes place when he's 30 years younger) kinda flies over people's heads, so the joke where he "de-ages himself" in this one is almost a non-sequitur.
It's a quick line of dialogue and a one-off practical effect so that the makeup department doesn't have to apply old-man makeup for most of the movie (in the first movie, we only see "old Doc" at the beginning and the end, but "old Doc" is the character we follow for most of the 2nd film and all of the 3rd, so it saves a lot of grief to not have to age him up.
@@secularmonk5176 Yeah, it's just funny to me that I bet 90% of the audience now, who has no pop culture image of a younger Christopher Lloyd, probably doesn't even notice he has old age makeup in the first movie in the first place (even though it makes perfect sense, and Glover, Thompson, and Wilson are all aged up).

The original actress to play Marty's girlfriend is the woman boss in The Office. The 2nd actress wasn't in part 2 because her mother had cancer. The 3rd actress for Marty's girlfriend would become the most popular, she won an Oscar later on.
