Renault clio not starting - Crankshaft position sensor problem

  • Sometimes a Renault Clio may not start because of problems with its crankshaft position sensor. It will turn over but won't fire up.
    The crankshaft position sensor is used by the cars ECU to determine where the crankshaft is at any given time, then it can decide when and what spark plug to use, and what injector needs to spray, if the sensor is faulty, it has no way of knowing what to do and therefore will not start.
    Its quite an easy component to get to, its found just below the air filter housing, and is held in with 2 10mm bolts and an electrical connector, a quick clean usually gets it fixed.
    About 2 years ago the clio was having problems with this constantly and was having no start problems quite often, i was regularly cleaning the sensor as it was getting covered in oil, it turned out that the oil was leaking through the air filter housing as the crankcase breather was blocked, when cleaning the throttle body i also cleaned the crankcase breather.
    In this video i replicated the problems i had by simply unplugging the sensor, although it was a bit dirty, it was still working fine, when there was an oil leak the sensor used to get covered in muck.
    This is the throttle body cleaning video here:
    • Renault Clio 1.2 16v D...
    Although i don't show cleaning out the crankshaft breather pipe or PCV valve in the video, when you have the inlet manifold off its easy to clean it out.
    Anyhow its a simple fix that should help if you need to get your car started.

    Stumbled by accident on your videos and you make the best tutorials I've seen. Really like the fact you don't talk and it's 4min of action showing where the fault and solution is. You watch somebody like ChrisFix or ScottyKilmer and you want to slice your wrists after 15min of talking, plus they still don't show how they fixed something since it's before/after cam shots. Shame you only do this for PSA vehicles. Got to hand it to the french they really don't know what they are doing with electric.

    This is the best video ever, today my clio wouldn’t start AGAIN like always. I almost gave up because I tried like 20 times and it finally started. That happened like three more times throughout the day and I had enough. Did the things you did and it took me like half an hour and it started perfectly and even faster. I feel like the car knows that i cleaned the sensor and is happy as am I. Thank you so much you absolute legend 🙏

    This worked like a charm. I initially thought it's down to battery as it was almost dead by trying to start. Tried jump start but still no luck. Then I stumbled upon this and it was worked straight away after I cleaned the sensor. Thank you for this upload. Must have saved about 150 plus quid if I had asked a mechanic to look in to.

    I have a Clio mkII (Y reg) so slightly older than this, but this fix has worked a treat. The only difference is that it's a hell of a lot more fiddly to get the sensor off on the model of Clio that I own! All in all it took around 45 minutes (I am very much a novice when it comes to mechanics), but as soon as I tested with the cleaned sensor back in place, it started on the button. Thanks!

    Moved my Clio, 30 minutes later it refused to start, just kept turning over. Close to tears, I found this clip, and without much hope followed the steps you did, not on a 16V, but on the 1.1 facelift 2000 model. Unbelievably, it fired up first time. I just used WD40 and a toothbrush to clean it up (wife's), and it didn't look as bad as yours did. Maybe it's the connection that was at fault, this is just an induction device. However, I am extremely grateful to you. Other videos show the component but not where it is fitted on the engine, you tell the whole story. Cheers.

      Hi
      Glad to hear you got the car sorted. In some instances the crankshaft position sensor can fail internally and when the engine heats up it gives problems which can result in the car not starting when hot but being fine first thing in the morining. Nonetheless if you know where the sensor is located its now easy to remove.

    Thanks mate, I have had the same problem with my Megane Coupe 1.4 16V several times in the past, the last one just a few days ago. Having watched your video, and learned from the past, I now always carry a 10mm socket wrench and a couple of spare TDC sensors in the car, so I simply replaced it in-situ as soon as it acted up one morning. I've resigned to treating the damn things as consumables.

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  5 років тому +1

      Haha to be honest after fixing this one the one time it never played up again but having a 10mm socket and some as spare makes sure there is no risk of breaking down.

    This video saved me ! Had problems month and month. Two garage's tried to fix it ( one even is an official Renault dealer !)
    In my case the sensor was not that dirty, but a few metal particles stick to it. Since it's a magnetic sensor, this could be a reason for malfunctioning. The whole 'repair' took less than 5 minutes. 8 weeks ago, now. Starts and runs like a charme. Freeze nor moist could prevent this. Very happy !!!

    Hi! You are a GENIUS! It's very cold over here right now so I didn't wan't to dismount it, just banged it very lightly with a very small 0,25 kg hammer (really just very-very slightly), I thought the dirt will just fall off. AND IT DID. Now it starts immediately. This weekend I'll clean my garage and I'll clean it following your guide :) Anyway my car starts now immediately!

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  9 років тому +1

      The mechanicals of the clio are not too bad, yes there is quite a few bits of plastic in the way to do some jobs but its an easy enough car to work on, and parts are quite cheap for it, it didnt really give any expensive problems.

    Hey. Thanks for the video. I was able to replace my crank shaft sensor on Dacia sandero. However it failed to start for me today? I’ve heard very hot weather can affect it? Should this be the case? The new sponsor is the blue one. It was working fine for about 4 - 5 days then today it failed to start. Kind of pushed the sensor by hand and got some one to turn the key and it came on first time??

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  Рік тому

      Hi there, thanks for the comment
      Heat can affect the sensors, if there is a small hairline crack on the sensor then the heat of the engine bay can cause it to expand. Its why cars might start on a cold morning but then as the car warms up or in hot weather it may play up.
      Have you replaced the sensor? Is the connector that goes to the sensor in good condition, ie is it clicking into place securely and is it free from corrosion?

    Hello, I have a Renault Clio 1.5 dci 2001 and it has been two years that I have a problem with the ignition from time to time, even on the road there are cases when I turn it off and it is difficult to turn it on, the heater and engine light turn on, I changed the injectors, sensor gear pump and sensor again the same problem, can this sensor be to blame that only this one I have not changed yet, thank you.

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  2 роки тому

      Hi there
      Im not 100% sure but i think the DCI has a crankshaft sensor somewhere, the 1.5 DCI can have issues where the injectors leak back and can be hard to start from cold. However if this is happening while you drive then it could be an issue like that. Is it just a case where it stops running? Any fault codes present?

      Hi there,
      Can you check the condition of the connector going to the sensor, is there any corrosion on the inside of it, also what condition are the wires.
      You might need to get a wiring diagram for the clio (sorry i dont have one owners clubs might help, or buy an e manual for it) then use a multimeter to check the continuity between the connector and its relevant pin on the ECU to ensure the connection is good.

    Hi mate, I have a 2004 Clio DCI 100. Every so often, it will stall when driving and then engine is hot, and won't start again until the engine has cooled, at least an hour. The car is also jerking when accelerating, and letting off. After it restarts, there are no codes present, and the MPG has tanked. Could this be the crank sensor? RAC guy said the code was no injector pulse, and told me my injectors were dead, and it will never run again. However, once cool, it starts right up. I really hope It's the crank sensor and not the injectors, because they are £250 + labour per cylinder. Cheers.

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  2 роки тому +1

      Hi there
      Best thing to do is join the clio sport facebook group (or any clio related pages) they are a fountain of knowledge.
      The crank sensor is a handy first thing to check first, the fact it quits when the engine is hot is a typical thing for a bad crank sensor to do. I do not actually remember where the sensor is on the 1.5 dci. This video is for the 1.2 petrol but one of those group pages will help you in that regard.
      About the injectors, there should be plenty of 2004 Clios or Renaults with that 1.5 engine in scrapyards, no need to go buying brand new injectors for a 2004 car when a used item should be adequately reliable.

    Is it worth me trying this with mine? been intermittently stalling about 5-10 times at the start of each journey for the past few months. i have a service light on at the moment which has been diagnosed as a lambda sensor but I'm sure that wouldn't interfere with ignition. Anyway this morning car won't start at all. Ignition comes on then i press the start button and a clicking noise and a buzzing noise like its trying to do something. Headlights come on nice and bright so don't think its the battery.

      It is more likely that your starter is failing, remove it and have an auto electrician refurbish it. I had to do it on this clio at a time, its fairly easy.

      This is interesting, does it cut out at all while driving? Some of these older renaults did give trouble with the immobiliser, is it disengaging, you may see a key symbol on the dash.
      Have you tried asking on any of the online sources, french car forum or the renault owners club facebook page?

    wow...so simple. I had the same issue 3 years ago with my renault clio 1.2 16V. I took my car over to the car electrician. He spotted this same problem with the crank sensor immediately but, of course he caught me unaware and he replaced this part that cost me around 50 euros! I am sure that if he wanted, he would do exactly the same procedure, i.e. to clean it thouroughly with the WD 40 and fix it on the spot but, of course he would get much less than 50 euros, out of which the 30 euros he said, charged me for his working time!! go figure, and now that my renault has the same problem, i will try to fix it my self...thanks a lot.

      @peugeotCitroen2CV  9 років тому

      +ΓΙΑΝΝΗΣ ΓΟΥΖΟΥΑΣΗΣ In some cases of course the sensor may be damaged and requires fixing €50 is about £35, i have bought some new prices vary but £20 does reasonable quality ones, the £15 labour rate is ok i suppose, i dont work as a mechnaic myself so cant comment on pricing, but it doesnt seem too bad.
      Having said that if you can do the same job yourself DIY its better.

    Hi there. I always come back to your videos when I am in need of fixing my kangoo 1.2 16 v d4f engine. My car stutters when accelerating in low gear (1,2,3) and then it goes fine. Also the engine seems to run worse when it is very hot. I run a diagnostic and fault code "df 145 multiplex " came up. Plus, on live data of the engine, speed sensor is totally off (this was confirmed also by a scan in a repair shop), although dashboard speedometer works fine. Do you think cleaning or replacing this part may help the engine run better, or could this be an issue of o2 sensors not working well themselves or because of a leakage in the catalytic converter? I thank you in advance

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  2 роки тому +2

      Hi there, great to read the videos are helpful.
      The engine speed sensor is not the one which reads in MPH or KPH that will be the one that shows the RPMs, the gague to the left of the speedometer.
      This sensor covered in this video i believe is the one which provides data back to the ECU on the engine speed.
      However the issues you have seem more like the dirty throttle body, i have a video on this channel covering the cleaning of the throttle body on the D4F engine. Its quite a common issue for them to splutter and act up. Mine did what you are describing, and had a few random issues. Take a look for the video and let me know how you get on.

    • @antoniocerbone802
      @antoniocerbone802 2 роки тому

      @@peugeotCitroen2CV So, the sensor covered in this video is the one that reads mph or kph? Because car speed is exactly what my diagnostic scan tool reports totally off. Although on the car dashboard speed reading is right. I would say is not a problem of the throttle body cause I cleaned it already using your video as tutorial. May it be an injector nozzle or a faulty fuel filter or fuel pump?

    I have clio 2 1.4 16v, and it wont start sometimes. But if i use start spray it always starts. Crankshaft sensor was recently replaced and i am still having this problem.. Any idea what could be wrong?

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  4 роки тому +2

      If it starts with easy start spray you may have an issue with the fuel delivery, injectors, possibly oiled up throttle body getting the wrong readings in which case a good clean with carb cleaner will work. Do you hear the fuel pump whirr as the ignition is turned on?

    Although my Clio Mk3 appeared to be running OK, the dashboard engine warning light came on last week. The OBD2 reader reported random cylinder misfire and camshaft position actuator circuit faults. After some research, I decided to look at the crankshaft sensor first. Cleaning it with steel wool appears to have fixed the problem. Woohoo! I actually spent a lot of time looking for the location of the sensor on the car. It was only until I saw a picture of a Clio crank angle sensor on the eurocarparts website then I was sure where it was located. Access is from underneath the car. It has a single 10mm mounting bolt.

I have not fixed the radio code yet cause I am not at home now, but I am just worry about the state of things with the car cause it was working perfectly fine before yesterday.

      Jay Breezy I never really had any problem starting up again, that could be the crankshaft position sensor, but then again if the pcv valve is clogged oil will leak out of the air filter housing down onto the sensor, and its probably cutting out because of a dirty throttle body in the first place. So worth doing it, its a bit fiddly and it takes a few hours to do but it doesnt cost anything, bar a set of inlet gaskets if the old ones are perished

      I'm assuming it's a diesel since you've replaced these parts. Just to clarify, the video I referred to was on a petrol Clio.
      For the diesel, I’d recommend plugging in diagnostic equipment first to check if you're getting a crank signal or any codes related to the fuel system or injectors. Diesel engines have a few extra points to troubleshoot when they're not starting.
      Start by checking the fuel primer bulb on the 1.5 dCi-these can cause issues. Is fuel reaching the high-pressure (HP) pump? Also, ensure the wiring to the injectors is intact. You might need to back probe the injector wires at the ECU to check for any breaks in the wiring.
