Capable to detect, track and engage frontaly, passively and stealthly other stealth fighters, with the combined use of the IRST21 and the two way data link Aim-120D, capable to control wingman drones and long range stealthy weapons like the LRASM, capable to attack electronically any radar, plane or communication device, from short to long waves (G version), capable to perform close air support from high or low altitude, even capable to return to base after been impacted by SAMs or Manpads (like the Hornets in Iraq) capable to fly with 14 AA missiles or 10 JDAMS (beast mode), capable to Sat-Com for battle management and recon, and off course capable to dogfight at very close distance with superb control and pin point accuracy, plus the use of helmet mounted display and off bore-sight missiles, and at a very affordable price per flight hour, makes the SH the most underrated US plane in history.
The F/A-18 Super Hornet Block 3 (just like all other 4.5 generation jets*) is capable of detecting and tracking true VLO, stealth aircraft, BUT, that's at short ranges only. Using its AN/APG-79 AESA radar it can detect a VLO stealth aircraft like the F-22 or F-35 at circa 20km at best. Using its IRST21, in 99.9% of combat situations, it can detect an F-22/F-35 type target at distances of about 50km. (It might bit able to detect them at more than 100km, but that is IF and only IF: - the weather conditions are perfect (no clouds, cold temperatures...); - The target is flying in full afterburner and with the Super Hornet chasing behind it; - the Super Hornet PREVIOUSLY knows where to look and cue the IRST; - the IRST is using its smallest FoV mode ) And this is just detection of the contact. In order to shoot down this F-22/F-35 type target, the Super Hornet has to get closer to the target to ID it, and then it has too get even much closer (like circa 20-30km), so that it is able to provide a fire solution using its laser rangefinder... But I'm not sure if it even has one (some IRST sensors don't have a laser rangefinder like, for example, the PIRATE IRST in the Eurofighter). In Air-to-Air combat against 5th gen aircraft, all other 4th/4.5 gen aircraft (Typhoon, Rafale, Gripen E/F, Su-35, etc...) have this same massive disadvantage/problem/limitation. ALL of them.
*IIRC, Boeing considers the F/A-18 Super Hornet to be a 5th gen aircraft... But that's BS. And I'm a Boeing fan.
@@deltasierracharlie I think you are not aware how the Navy is using the IRST-21 (the next generation IRST). they are able to detect not only IR but also long waves, through the clouds. Combining two IRST at longer distances than the Aesa radar, they can geolocate the target by triangulation, to provide a targeting solution for the AIM-120D, all the way up to the target, the missile will arrive without using its own radar up to 5 seconds before impact, flying at Mach 3.5. The enemy will never know who killed him.
Looks awesome! When we sill see the Conformal Fuel tanks? I understand they will be a 'replacement' from the drop tanks so the Super can carry more weapons and have more time on station - will they be on every Block3 or used as needed?
Jay Gaming Why do you think that? 30 Superhornets and 15 Growlers are still on the shopping list🤔 I live in Germany and want to see these pretty jets in the sky😃
The Block III Super Hornet has shoulder mounted conformal fuel tanks on the outside for longer range. Inside the cockpit, the advanced cockpit system has replaced the buttons and knobs, similar to a large tablet. Block III Super Hornets will add longer range, enhanced communication and network systems, an advanced cockpit system and reduced radar signature. The fighter’s life will also be extended from 6k to 10k hours.
Are you an investment activist or something? Either way I'm pretty sure you realize the engineers from the old MacDonald Douglas in St Louis are not working on the 737 certification
Operational Block III Super Hornets will add longer range, enhanced communication and network systems, an advanced cockpit system and reduced radar signature. The fighter’s life will also be extended from 6k to 10k hours.
Canards would make it look cool. I always wondered what a Hornet with canards would look like and how it would impact performance. The paint also gives off an Ace Combat 3 style vibe too, all it needs is a fully enclosed cockpit that uses cameras mounted around the aircraft body to give it full 360 degree view.
Foreplanes you mean? J-20 did it, and may be an interesting design. Would allow for 'unstallable' planes, but at the cost of RCS and visibility needed in a strike aircraft.
The F/A-18 Hornet and F/A-18 Super Hornet were created/developed without canards. It's not possible and not good to install them now. There's no place for them to be installed. And even if there was, adding canards now would be counter productive... They would add weight, increase drag and increase the RCS. Also, at least the wings would have to be changed with new ones with a different design that is optimized for the new canard-wing aero interaction. So, you can see now why adding canards would be a bad idea... You would be basically making a new aircraft. The aerodynamic properties of the aircraft would change a lot, the mass properties and distribution would also change. The flight control laws would obviously have to be changed. All of this would cost a lot of money to develop... And then, test flights would have to be done in order to see what needs to be fixed and improved, etc.. Not feasible, not worth it. It's better to spend the money in upgrades like the new ones in the Block 3 SH, or developing a new jet which is what the Navy is also doing.
Everyone wants to see them with their conformal fuel tanks. Make it happen Boeing. Besides jets almost always fly with their drop tanks for the added fuel. If the Navy is gonna be testing them they should come with the conformal fuel tanks to be tested along with the jet.

It's not the design that makes a plane.. it's the gadgets. If a WW1 biplane gets a radar, missiles, composite fuselage etc it's just as good, limited sure but competitive. Reason I say this is cus the Hornet is underrated/overrated. I don't like the design, but gadgets are one of the best. Ashame the F14 wasn't modernized, read that the F14 was gonna get a modern redesign and become the F21 Super Tomcat but got cancelled in favor for the F/A 18.
Really sad to see the state of design & development in innovation. It is stunted without doubt. Not just in the field of aerospace but in other disciplines; like theoretical physics, nuclear engineering etc. Maybe a change in gov't focus allowing for diversity in our culture would help.
Do all Block 3 Hornets have the EPE engines?
Imagine building an F-16 competitor that turned into this... [This comment was made by Northrop/ McDonnell Douglas]

They probably won’t add them back on
Boeing at its best minus MCAS. Magnifico indeed ✈️🇬🇧🙏🇺🇸💜👍👨✈️🌟
I hope that Germany is soon purchasing this aircraft😃
They’re not. They changed their minds. Unfortunately

Mark Kir Nvm they are buying the supers and the growlers. Its still on the market. You are gonna LOVE them as much as I do. They’re my favorite jet
Jay Gaming I hope so! And yes, I love the Hornets🤗 Greetings from Germany!
Mark Kir the aircraft is such a beauty every year when I got to Florida beaches you can see a bunch of type of aircraft in sky it’s just amazing
Boeing rocks!
What’s the difference between the new model and the previous?
Primarily new avionics & Conformal Fuel Tank ready airframe. I forgot if it has new engines or not.

Buy a Rafale if you want canards.
In an air superiority role, is this new aircraft more capable than the f 15?
Amazing! I fly the 737 and your equipment is stunning!
Anyone know if any block III’s have been delivered yet?? Thanks
0:27 - what's goings-on on with the gear there?
one sidebar is not retracting??
I would assume that they didn't retract at the same time because of hydraulics. You can see the gear starting to retract at the end of that clip.
Ali Mohsin agreed
This is why people need to get 777X folding wingtips will be safe. They are used on good supersonic fighters like this one
Did Boeing fix the outward-canting pylons on the Block III Super Hornets? They supposedly add drag and may also increase the RCS.
Will the block III be getting the more powerful engines as well? Will the pylons point into the airflow instead of outwards?
Are they Tictac rated?
Have the engines been upgraded to handle the heavier weight and aerodynamic differences?
nah man they forgot
The super hornet is the best fighter in the US Navy.
Other than the F-35, sure.
No the hornet is better
I prefer the legacy Hornet
F 18s are the best in general
Nah the F3F is the best nothing comes close.
rumor has the block 3 removed 20mm cannons. is that true?
I still see the gun port so I'm gonna say the rumor is not true.
Love it!
Yeah Boeing!!!!
Where's the IRST system under the nose cone, which was displayed earlier??
For the F/A-18 Block III, the IRST is in a separate pod. Same for the F-15EX.
