Do you treat the butcher block with sealant or oil before applying the epoxy? If not do you oil the bottom at least or leave bare? What If I wanted a darker stain before epoxy, is that ok or will the stain repel the epoxy?

In this case, butcher block was used as a table. Not a cutting block. Do not put epoxy over any surface you wish to cut on. Use butcher block oil found on the WiseBond website. Also, epoxy will not stick to any oil surface. Use a water based stain under epoxy if you want a darker look.

I've done plenty of epoxy tables and islands for kitchens and one way I have found is, if the scratch is not deep, you can sand just the area over the scratch, mix a very small amount of epoxy, and gently use a brush or sponge to apply a light layer to the scratched area. Be sure to sand enough to remove the scratch, and use a fine sandpaper, like 320 grit. The more precision you use with the sanding and touch up, the better it will come out. If it is a deep scratch, you have to asses it. If it's a large deep scratch, it would be best to probably sand the entire top, remove as much of the epoxy as possible and re- apply. Hope that helps somewhat.

Do you apply to both sides of the counter top and how does it account for expanding and contracting?

If you're sealing with epoxy, the top and side layers are all you really need to worry about sealing. If you're using an oil or varnish, you'll want to coat both sides of the wood.

… also it’s somewhat of a Gel. So it’s graceful with expanding and contracting.. fire , scratch and water proof . I mean ofcourse you can dig a cut in it intentionally, but it’s fairly scratch proof .. atleast the brands that I’ve used..
