I have never seen these memorials from this perspective. As a proud American with a very deep respect for our military, from a retired LEO cut from similar cloth where pride, respect, integrity and honor are the driving forces in my life, I humbly thank you.

💯 agree. I was born and raised in Norway as a British citizen. My father was English, still have family there and love England. Shortly after World War II, my mother who lived under German occupation in Norway, moved to England and years later met my dad. late into my teens, we moved here. I recall moving to Torrington, Connecticut, and watching my mother drop to her knees crying…the local volunteer fire department sounded their siren at 12 noon, which, according to my mother sounded just like the air raid sirens from World War II. Thank you again.

Hi Guys, bit of catching up to do, another very poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by so many (for our today they gave their tomorrow’s) and the freedom that we have and cherish and must fight to keep as their are those who would steal that from us.
Guys there is another memorial to Easy Company near the village of Foy ( Battle of the Bulge) in Belgium which was funded (I’m told) by Tom Hanks and Stephen Spielberg.
The Band of Brothers series was excellent to watch and the clips of the actual E Coy members made it all the more poignant.
The burial grounds are so moving, 4 of us visited some years ago and we were all in tears. Such beautiful, peaceful and well kept places behind which is so much sadness.
Yes it’s a strange thing, you have to go to the cemetery’s and see for yourself to truly begin to understand the scale of it

It's me again! The landing craft was built by Higgins boat company which also made PT boats and small ships during the war, in New Orelans, Louisiana, USA. During the war my grandparents on my mother's side pulled up stakes in Jackson, Mississippi, about 200 miles north of New Orleans and my grandfather, who opened a house building company, first went about 90 miles south where my grandfather worked as a sub contractor for a New York based contractor, building Camp Van Dorn, an army camp. because the need for army camps was in such need, the workers built barracks buildings out of wood and did not go home at night but slept in the barracks building that they had just build, being ready to start work immediately. They ate in the mess hall that they had also built. My grandmother and mother rented a house in nearby McComb, Mississippi. Troops began to arrive before the camp was finished, so as soon as a block of barricks was finished, the workers moved into the first barracks of the next block they were going to build. While he was there there was a race riot in the camp when the all black 364th Infantry Division, mad at white people in the nearby town of Centerville had harassed and beaten several black soldiers from the 364th. The entire division did not participate in the riot but instead warned the camp authorities that a large number of 364th men were storming an arsenal and armed themselves with M1 rifles and ammunition, and said that they were going into Centerville to burn the entire town down. The authorities told the Military Police to set up a "no pass" perimeter within the camp facing inward. They then told the rioters that if they passed across the perimeter line, they would be fired upon. AS it so happened, this line ran right outside the barricks where the civilians were housed. MPs warned the civilians to lay down on the floor so that the would be safer and to not get back up until they were told it was safe to do so. Grandpa said that they could hear the rioters getting closer and that the MPs had set up large machine guns around the perimeter and while it was still dark the rioters crossed the line and were fired upon by the MPs just as they warned they would do. It went on for some time and then there was silence for a long time. At first light my grandfather raised up from the floor and looked out the window. He told me that he saw dead black soldiers all over the place. The number of dead was around 260, and it made national and international news. It happened a year before D-Day.
After the camp was finished, Grandpa and Grandma and mom moved to New Orelans and worked at Higgins industries. My grandfather who had been a submariner sonar and radio operator in the US submarine K2. Because he had previous navy experience, he was asked to join the volunteer Coast Guard and made an officer and he was in charge of guarding the Higgins waves during the nighttime. Grandma knew shorthand and became Andrew Higgins personal stenographer and head of the Stenography Pool. They served in those capacities until the end of the war. When I was born in 1955, my parents and I lived with my grandparents and the house was filled with items from Higgins Industries. I still have PT boat lapel pins, Red Cross pins, magazines produced at Higgins. The walls of my grandfather's drafting room were covered with photos of PT boats, and a large photo of Andrew Higgins. So when I saw you walk onto the landing craft I just wanted to let you know that I have a family connection to the Higgins boat company!
About the bombs missing the fortifications at Omaha beach, there was one very important thing the bombing did. It destroyed much of the underground communications wires making it impossible for the German bunkers to communicate with each other, hampering the defense. Also the Germans had small tracked vehicles called Goliaths which were filled with explosives and operated by remote control wires. Back then all radios as will as the Goliaths had tubes instead of transistors, and the shock waves of the explosions also ruined the ability of the German operators to control their Goliaths making them all unable to be used. These were kept concealed in narrow concrete bunkers with movable concrete slab roofs. While the Bunkers were very strong the concrete slab roofs were easily destroyed, killing many of the solders who were there to control the Goliaths.

I was binge watching Band Of Brothers on my United flight over to Europe, for the 80th anniversary. But I totally missed that there is a memorial for Dick Winters, and for the 82nd and 101 Airborne. So much to see. I could not have squeezed more into my schedule anyway : )

Really excellent video. I have not been to Normandy, but I have mentioned before that I have visited the graves of two Great Uncles on the Somme. Visiting any war cemetery or memorial is sobering and I agree with you both that you are left deep in thought and reflecting on the almost unimaginable sacrifice of those who gave their lives, and of the families left to grieve their lost loved ones. My grandmother died at the age of 97, she was 18 when her bothers were killed and she spoke to me about them on numerous occasions. I don't think there was a day in her life when she did not miss them. I intend to go back to the Somme later this year... and on a regular basis for as long as I can. It is the very least we can do.

The American cemetery is something else, a sight to be hold. I just stood there and shed a load of tears. it's a good place to be to realise that war is futile, the waste of human life is beyond belief. Drop down to the Bayeux tapestry, that's really interesting too.....

Difficult to imagine the horror on those beaches and surrounding areas….

When going through my grandfather's memoirs of the beach Landings we found a story of him. A Canadian marksman, with his spotter. Also, his best friend and one other private soldier hit the beaches running, when my grandfather got to his final position. Neither his spotter or his friend remained. So alone he took down enemy positions. I cannot imagine what was going through his head at that time. I've been to many of these places you're at now. The video is great. These places are truly beautiful but with a very sad history

Nice one guys - we were there early June for the 80th anniversary it really is a special place, every where you go there are reminders of the horror that took place there.

Great video Rich & Ewa, look at Richy Vida and several others on a Bluetooth unit on the Africa Twin for the CarPlay, think there are several costing around fifty pounds.
In your video at @ 10 minutes or so, those narrow lanes you rode through is known as the Bocage, it was because of those high hedgerows and narrow lanes that made the fighting even harder than usual.
Must have been scary making your way up those hedge rows

I would go to Pegasus Bridge, captured before the landings by a small group in Horsa Gliders landing on a very narrow strip of land, great talk at the museum, what they did seems impossible.
And right next door is the famous Cafe Gondree, where the best champagne was buried in the garden when the Germans took over, and dug up again when the cafe was liberated. The first building to be liberated on d day.
Madam Gondree still works in the cafe. She was a little girl when the cafe was liberated and is still alive. Sharp as a tack. Incredible woman, iconic.
Then there's Arromanche, and Mulberry Harbours.. etc etc
But you're righr. You can't see it all.
Just have to go back.

The American Cemetary is one hell of a place, been there twice, your drone views were great. The Overlord Meseum that you passed on the way out is another nice place to visit, but then there are so many places of interest.
Yes it’s been hard to cherry pick the places we went to this time but it’s a perfect reason to return here some day

A very intriguing and moving episode, seeing Omaha beach the way it is now it is hard to imagine the horrors that occurred there, all those lives gone, it's heartbreaking, yet the world is still at war! Lovely drone footage again, good to see the Apple car play up and running, I agree, Honda should have made the connection wireless!

Just want to echo what every one else has said. A***. Great drone footage.
If you are travelling east towards Metz and Luxembourg then the WW1 memorials at Verdun are very much worth a visit. The memorials here really bring home the futility of that war.
There's also Oradour sur Glane in the Charente just NW of Limoges a small town where German soldiers massacred most of the people of the town. It was preserved as it was left by the Germans when they left. Bodies had obviously been removed but it is the most chilling memorial to the terror of war I have ever been to. I visited it in 1990 so well over 30 years ago before these memorials became commercial enterprises but although it has since been 'sanitised' in the intervening yeas since I saw it, I believe it still has the same impact. When I went there were still visible blood stains of the walls of the church where the Germans shot the towns people.
On another note I found France really expensive when I was there in May. Spain was a lot cheaper. The Spanish are more friendly to bikers as well.
I would buy yourself a proper large frying pan to cook. I can't cook on a Trangia even though the pans of the big one are larger they are still too small for my meals. Frying pan goes in my top box. I have an MSR Whisperlite International multi fuel stove with wind shield. It can burn all fuels, but I use butane/propane gas.

Your right about France being expensive, especially food and fuel here. Did you senior Spain and Portugal’s tour last month or so? Portugal was fantastic and so cheap
@@ontheroadadventure Yes watched a couple of your Spain videos, the one where you narrowly escaped death when the tree fell on your tent and bike. Need to go back and watch more I guess. Will slowly catch up. The French are good though at remembering the horrors of two world wars, but as time passes, it's 80 years now since the end of the 2nd world war, younger generations become less interested. Unfortunately now I fear history is repeating itself with the rise of fanatical Is slimmism in Europe and the UK because of mass uncontrolled immigration. None of these new comers share or want to share our history. They want to do us harm. Our politicians and those in Europe are pretty much closing the book on our shared histories which made us work together post WW2. It is truly frightening what is happening now. I am so lucky I was born when I was. I really fear for our future generations. These memorials to the huge loss of life need to be kept going and the interest in them but it get's harder as each year passes and memories fade people die even 2-3 generations after. Most of today's kids aren't interested let alone appreciate what the world at war meant for people living at that time. I reckon most Londoners now don't even know or care about the Blitz in London in 1940 where most of it was destroyed by German air raids as most in London are now new comers. That era in our history and people are long gone. Sad.

I really enjoy seeing you both camping etc and it gives me the urge to do so once I can get away. I just need to work out how I do it solo in terms of what I can carry with me...or maybe I need to buy a K1600....🤔
Carrying out kit is a constant battle we are always looking for ways to reduce what we have

In one way yes but also we have double the stuff and our tent needs to be much bigger. We also have to carry cameras, drone, tripod, mics, solar powered power bank etc so we have more than most I’d say to make the filming possible

So having done 2 weeks in Europe on the motorcycle last year, we've decided to put the motorcycle in the campervan this year. Get it out at the campsite and go off to explore. (Oh, I'm going to do a spoof of your 'proposal video' halfway through our trip. I'll find an impressive piece of rock and get down on one knee and propose to The Murgatroyd. So you skipped the army ration option due to the weight… What made you stick with the Trangia cooking setup, as opposed to other options you have tried and talked about ?
This is a big debate everything we go away as to what to take. I would prefer to take the big grill pan and firemaple stove. However it’s large and doesn’t do everything. The trangia is the best all rounder but not the best grill or fry for example. We basically have to choose one and the trangia is the smallest pack size that does everything ok
i am fairly certain that at 10 42 after visiting the memorial you actually go past the infamous brecourt manor where dick winters organised the attack on the artillary pieces that were firing onto the beaches you mention the road likely being busy with tanks......have done a similar tour like you camping and visiting the sites and the british cemetary at hottot-les-bagues where my uncle is buried...he was 21 at the time you need many visits to cover all the sites of interest...merville battery is just up the road from pegasus.....anyhoo keep up the interesting content it is very enjoyable and interesting to watch

When I was in Normandy for the 80th, they had these damn fully automated gas stations. And they would not accept my American Credit nor Debit cards, only European ones. I don t have those. I always kept my tank as full as possible, whenever I found a gas station with a real attendant. Damn automation : )

What were you in? We live near dunkeswell Airfield, it played a huge part in D day I believe
@@ontheroadadventure I just flew a light aircraft from Connington near where I live in Peterborough, my grandfather served with the 457th bomb group as assistant inspector, its still used for light aircraft and still use the original runway, base is known as Glatton but is in Connington

Did you have a look at the ages of those that died at Omaha. Very sobering 😢. Every schoolchild should be made to visit WW1 and WW2 memorials, museums and graves then maybe when a few of them rise to be politicians in their countries they will not be leading their nations into war!!

i use Google maps on carplay on a carpuride w702b on my BMW R1250 gs far better than the Bmw nav system 👍,

Yes I saw that one but it’s just a generic Chinese dongle, I’m not sure how well that would fair with the miles we do in all weathers. It’s a shame Honda haven’t sorted this properly yet

Personally, I'm so cynical about War these days, I tried to watch it for the Innocent lads that died in these events... but I got mad and had to skip. Sure it was great content.
History belongs to the victors and Boris scuppered Ukraine peace talks, so I wonder about WW2 these days (there was evil stuff I know).
We prefer our tent now too paying triple the cost for a basic room. At least we know what we are getting in our own tent 👍
