Margaret Hamilton was a treasure of a woman. It has always broke my heart to hear how she suffered greatly over the burns she received while filming The Wizard of Oz - both physically & emotionally. I highly recommend the episode of Cursed Films on Shudder about The Wizard of Oz to hear all about the trauma she suffered & how she persevered despite it all. The story of her coming home, covered in bandages, and explaining to her son? why she has them is so heartbreaking but precious as well. She was a real treasure and hope she had a happy life despite it all.
I knew she had appeared in a stage production of the musical 'A Little Night Music' (among many others), and was delighted to recently find audio of her song in the show on UA-cam.
It doesn't break my heart I don't care
@@turtleboy1188 i initially wrote this post insulting you, that wasn't right, sorry. but, how do i say this....
almost everything good and pleasant and safe that has come into your life has been because someone, somewhere, cared-perhaps just in general, perhaps about you personally. the only thing that makes lives worth living is love and care and if you want to cut yourself off from all that you will be alone and dead even while you are alive.
you should care about things, and if you really don't, then you should know enough to admit that it's not something to brag about. not caring doesn't mean you're better than other people, it means you're missing something.
It ruined her life because copper is used to make her look green and she got alzheimers which is linked to copper
@@turtleboy1188 get therapy you sociopath
It's funny to think that she and Judy Garland were actually really good friends given their villain/heroine relationship in the film. In fact she was pretty much the only one who treated Judy with any decency (seriously, even the dog was a huge jerk behind the scenes).
How do you know the dog was a well?
Roy Bolger I think guest starred on Judy's talk show and they sang the cut Jitterbug song
I'm so glad they were friends. I always thought their interactions had so much chemistry in the movies, now I get why!
@@maddalonefarms My boyfriend's has a lot of experience in Hollywood and he heard plenty of stories. The little mutt even pissed on the Cowardly Lion costume.
really even Billie Burke didn't act so good witchly?
I gasped when I saw this thumbnail. As a lifelong fan of both Sesame Street and The Wizard of Oz who was born too late to have seen the original airing this has been my personal holy grail of lost media. What a blessing for us to finally be able to see the lost chapter of such a great woman's career. Thank you for covering this.
Well for starters, I'm unaware of any TV that James Dean did, and secondly, I don't care for him as an actor. Beyond that, The Wizard of Oz was my now deceased grandmother's favorite movie, and she adored The Muppets. This episode seems like it would have been tailor made for us to have watched together, being able to do so, even with her gone, makes me feel closer to her.
Still can’t believe this got found. Big week for Lost Media.
Can’t wait to see the video.
Same.
Only thing that would make this week better would be if they found _London After Midnight_ or the original cut of Phantom of the Opera.
Yeah me neither. I mean, how this happened is a mystery!
@@Lobsterwithinternet As a Lon Chaney fan: Ditto!
@Black-Handed_Ice_ Gwiazda Oh! That would make my year if they could find them and then release all the episodes as part of a restored Mega collection.
Would pay $1,000 for that! 🦞😁🤌
Me neither! I hope some of us make sure we have backup copies so it doesn't happen again anytime soon. XD
She was fantastic as the wicked witch. It’s so funny to think she was a former day care teacher in spite of terrifying the pants of little kids.
Really?
Also, I’ve heard that she was the only person who was nice to Judy Garland on the set of the Wizard of Oz. The scarecrow, tin man and lion actors were supposedly horrible to her. How ironic.
@@mgthestrange9098 Yeah, I always feel sad when I think of what Judy went through for her stardom. It is nice that she did sound like she had some fond memories of The Wizard of Oz even though it sounded like a pretty insane production. Like Margaret Hamilton being burned by the pyrotechnics in the trap door scene.
@@mgthestrange9098 What I read is that the Tin Man also tried to be nice, but was too much of a coward to stand up for her. His cruelty came in the form of what he didn't do. The Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion frequently hit on her despite her age as did most of the male Munchkins. The studio executives put her on a diet of chicken broth, apples, plain black coffee, Chesterfield cigarettes, and amphetamines so she'd stay slim enough to fit into the tailor-fit costume. This was back when the studio owned your soul practically and virtually everyone was treated like garbage by the filmmakers on set while only a few actors and actresses showed each other only a little kindness. Another little fun fact is that the Munchkins would have wild parties up to and including frequent mass orgies. The making of the Wizard of Oz is one of the most twisted tales of all time.
She was a kindergarten teacher
Another bit of Oz trivia involving Margaret. She was later cast as the voice of Auntie Em in Filmation's first feature length picture, Journey Back to Oz. In this version, Dorothy was played by Liza Minnelli, Judy Garland's daughter.
wow things come full circle
I knew about Dorothy being played by Garland's daughter as my dad often told me this trivia but I never knew Auntie Em was played by the same actor who played the Witch. That's pretty cool.
Oh yeah..... I forgot that. I saw the animated movie when I was a kid... And to get such big names for a made for TV movie is phenomenal! I need to look up that movie again.
I feel dumb Liza Minnelli is Judy's daughter?! I just found this out
Also, Judy Garlands daughter married the son of the dude that played the Tim Man.
The fact Ms. Hamilton often joked her obituary headline should be “Ding, dong the witch is dead” indicates what a sense of humor she had and the effect her portrayal had on our culture.
Wow, they found it?!!! That's terrific! I was so little when i last saw this episode. I loved that episode and was sad it had to be remorved. Now i finally get to see again this memory decades later in another century. Thank you to whoever found it.
Awesome, huh? Idk if you know, but this was originally locked up by a company who I forgot the name of, and a Reddit user hacked and leaked the video onto Reddit, and as you can imagine, it spread like WILDFIRE. A lot of stuff was deleted, but thankfully a good portion is still up, including the full video. Now, we will NEVER lose it again.
I've watched the episode and I loved it when the witch disguises herself as "a nice old lady" only for her to become Margaret Hamilton's real appearance. It's nice way of using the actress and show her acting talent as she gives a completely different preformance without the witch's costume.
I can’t help but be curious as to what Margret Hamilton would think about the novel and musical versions of Wicked turning the Wicked Witch into a hero. I think she’d get a kick out of it.
Such a dear soul bless your heart Margaret and bless your gingerbread hearts for showing it.🎃🌻🧹🎃🌻🧹🎃🌻🧹
I just watched that episode, it's not that scary, but again it was the 70s so I know why many children were terrified of the witch.
That and a lot of children are easy to scare.
Neither is the skit where Ernie and Bert explore a pyramid and see sarcophagi that suspiciously look like them, but a LOT of Sesame Street fans say that skit scared them as a child.
And this was aimed at very young children.
Remembering back when I was a little kid in the 90s, I couldn’t see myself being afraid of this episode. What about it being the 70s makes you think kids would be more scared of it as opposed to any other time?
@@mightyfilm That was scary! I think maybe it's strange for little kids to see doppelgangers without having the thought process to tell the difference between Ernie and statue-Ernie.
I find Mrs. Hamilton’s appearance on Mr. Roger’s assuring the young viewers that while the Wicked Witch might be scary, she’s only make-believe character more than a little ironic.
I don't see the irony. Without the witch costume, Mrs. Hamiltion wasn't at all scary. Quite the opposite, I think. And Mr. Rogers was certainly not scary.
@@rookmaster7502 Yeah I'm not sure if very many people online even know what the word "ironic" means, the way they throw it around.
First the quantum quest Cassini space odessey movie and now this. The lost media community is making great strides so far.
Let me do some quick math for you.
Wizard of Oz: Released in 1939.
The infamous episode of Sesame Street: Broadcast in 1976, for a difference of 37 years.
Margaret Hamilton was 64 years old when the Sesame Street episode aired. The fact that even when she's "past her prime" she can still terrify people is a testament to how skilled she was as an actor.
She was 74, not 64.
She didn't miss a beat reprising her role as the Wicked Witch all those years later.
What a time to be alive
I always assumed in the 1970s that it was the parents that were seeing the witch as terrifying to be on Sesame Street. I’ll bet the children back then were more curious than afraid over who this character is.
Perhaps the parents were only overreacting back then.
So glad to see the episode was recovered; I was worried the footage was lost to time. Thank god that wasn't the case.
A witch talking to a nugg of weed has got to be the height of my psychotropic adventure.
Thank You Very Much For Sharing This. I never was able or knew about the sesame street episode. So was Nice to see it. My children grew up with sesame street. Brought back Good Memories 😘😚🤗
This is an historic moment for both Sesame Street fans and Wizard of Oz fans.
And KISS...... She posed with Gene Simmons in a couple of pictures as shown at the 4:33 mark ;)
This piece of lost media has intrigued me for so many years
Godspeeds first album being found, the Duke Nukem Forever 2001 build being leaked, and now this?
2022 has been insane for lost media.
I had watched it several times on black and white TV and was surprised when I finally saw it on a color TV. That moment when Dorothy opened the door to the colorful munchkin land was magical.
I grew up watching the Wizard of Oz on a black and white TV.... It wasn't until my grandma got a color set that I knew that it actually was a color movie! Imagine the first theater audiences shock and then thrill when Dorothy opened her front door to all that color! I was one of those weird kids who liked the Wicked Witch of the West. I'm so glad she didn't shun the role when asked to do it later. I was an adult when she made an appearance on Sesame Street, so I didn't know she was on it and missed it. I've seen some of the other movies and appearances she's been in, she was the Great Witch in H. R. PuffnStuff and also in the movie version of "The Worst Witch" also as a high ranking bad witch. She often stole the show as a character actor as well. Thank you so much for your video on Margaret Hamilton. ❤️
I was so happy about today's video! I think, I even cried a bit. Love the witch!
Witches and puppetry. The best of both worlds.
Oh my Lord, the witch in the Wizard of Oz absolutely and completly terrorized me for years and years and years as a kid! I used to at first, sleep under my bed after a nightmare about her, and later, move my bedroom furniture around (yes, as small as in third grade), thinking that if she came to my house, she would think she was in the wrong kid's room and go away! I think I was 14 before I finally got over this woman's performance - although I STILL rarely, rarely ever watch the movie, because it has so many scary associations with night terrors for me. I never even let my kids watch it until they were older! Maybe if there had been a Mister Rogers around for me to watch when I was young, that whole bad night time ordeal would have been avoided!
Did you happen to grow up in a Christian family?
I saw the movie at a very young age and I thought the witch rocked the very first time. I was also watching "Bewitched" at the time.
After so many years of watching videos on UA-cam about lost media claiming that this Wicked Witch Sesame Street episode might never be shown to the public again, the day has finally come. As a big fan of the Oz movie and Sesame Street I'm so glad for this turn of good luck
The holy grail has been found! We spit your general direction!
I was at the event where the episode first got leaked to the public in NYC. Everyone was warned not to leak any footage but I had a feeling someone would break that rule. I am a huge Oz/Margaret Hamilton/Lost Media fan and am weirdly proud that I got to be there for this moment in lost media history.
That's awesome and I know you must've really enjoyed it, but it's really sad that we're in such a sensitive age that banned footage has to be shown privately at events instead of just being put back on the tube. I've seen it and there's nothing wrong with it.
It's a shame that the episode never aired. God Bless you Ms. Hamilton. You will always be "Our Pretty."
It did air, it was just removed from syndication.
As soon as I saw the clip, I was sure I remembered seeing it as a child! The timing lines up, as I would have been 4 when it aired, and I was REALLY into Wizard of Oz: My dad read me all the books, and I had a "Wizard of Oz" reading pillow, so I would have been sure to tune in. Oscar was my favorite, so him being in love with the Wicked Witch and the gag of turning Big Bird into a feather duster were very memorable.
I remember when she was on Mr Rogers. 🥰
She was one of the reasons why I love wizard of oz
I’ve been looking for this video for a decade.
Ladies and gentlemen, we got em
That is so Mr. Rogers! I was terrified of the scene where the witch pops in, so I wish he had been around when I watched it, which was so long ago that I did not know part of it was in color.
One of the holy grails of lost media is now found!
One of the most iconic lost media examples no longer being lost, :)
Wow! I’m actually really excited to see this!!!!
nice Video, cool that we in 2022 can finally see this episode
I made a longer post about this but I highly recommend everyone watch Shudder’s Cursed Films episode on The Wizard of Oz, as it focuses on Margaret Hamilton’s time filming during the Wizard of Oz. Also, she was a huge animal advocate & was a truly beautiful person.
6:13 She threaten to turn David into a Basketball?? Bruh.. c’mon now Sesame Street..😂
She reminded me of my dear Grandma.
This just popped up in another Group I am in and then 💥 you uploaded a video on the subject.
Dom Deluise said not only was Margaret Hamilton the sweetest person on the planet, but she made a killer tuna fish sandwich, using pumpernickel for the bread.
Love it!!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Wow! Never would've thought it'd be possible to obtain that lost episode.
I tried to see a dentist with a striking resemble to Margaret. She was friendly enough, but I just couldn't go back.
Omg, thank you for showing this episode ☺️
I also remember reading her biography on Wikipedia about an incident which occurred while filming the Wizard of Oz of a fire scene which got out of control and engulfed her in flames and although the stage crew quickly doused her, it left her with 2nd degree burns. I felt so bad for her after hearing about that.
Where did you hear this at? On the 700 club something?
@@ManyLegions88 Wikipedia
I saw mention of this on BlameitonJorge's channel ages ago and they've found it?! AHHHH! that's so cool! Another win for the lost media community!
Maeia was so young here I remember this one.
The Wicked Witch of the West x Oscar the Grouch ain’t a bad idea for a crossover ship lol
I Seem to be the only person who recalls her and Ray Bolger doing a breakfast cereal commercial in the late 70's.
What an awesome episode, though I still have nightmares about her 42 years later lol
Disguising Herself as Margret Hamilton. Great Gag
That's actually pretty cool
I know I am still so amazed and mind blown that someone founded the actual lost episode of Seasme Street and posted on Reddit and than onto Facebook. I like to know who and where and how did they uncover this
First time seeing your video on this i caught you on the recent shrek discovery. What a month or so its been!
Wizard of Oz is there at the same level as Jaws of “movies everyone watches”
Thinking about her character, the Wicked Witch of the West,. Tragically reminds me of one of the lost deleted scenes from the film, that was shown only to test screenings, the triumphal return to Emerald City.
I'm okay with all of the other scenes being cut except for that one and I wish that one at least survived the most, it kind of makes me resent the scarecrow dance.
Yes I'm aware that only a few seconds of footage of that scene survive in one of the trailers, I doubt the rest of it survives anywhere else.
I completely share another user's mindset and perspective about that lost deleted scene
Great video! Thanks!
Margaret out of makeup is actually quite attractive❤
Right? She looks like such a friendly old lady. It’s funny she could slip into the Wicked Witch role and scare the pants off any kid watching Wizard of Oz for the first time. That Mr. Rogers episode where they explain how it’s just pretend and acting to make kids less frightened by the wicked witch was so cute.
Damn I didn't think this would ever get found!
Clicked on this as soon as I saw it.
Edit: For everyone who are saying this isn't scary.
Just remember that this was back in the 70s on a show made for much younger kids. They didn't have the internet to watch so this would have been the scariest thing they ever saw in their lives.
I don't get the people pooh-poohing the scariness. If I was 5 years old and hearing that laughter, I think I'd need my Mommy to watch it with me next time.
@@TheDanishGuyReviews My point exactly.
People who grew up in the 90s onward don't understand how sheltered kids were from a lot of things we take for granted today.
Heck, it was only 20 years beforehand that the first tv couple was seen in bed together (it was The Flinstones, btw).
@@Lobsterwithinternet First onscreen pregnancy as well, I think. I wouldn't exactly pick the Flintstones as groundbreaking pioneers, so it's very interesting to go into it's many firsts. Also, an animated married couple and their friends in a slice of life story is how we later got Simpsons and Family Guy.
@@TheDanishGuyReviews Yep. You’d think it was some obscure show, not a primetime cartoon back during the old comic code days.
I can't wait to see how scary this supposedly is!
It's not.
Your right, now I feel stupid
@@roxassora2706 Well not to us but probably little children at the time.
i never thought i would see the day where this gets found. this has been the piece of lost media I’ve wanted found since i first started looking into lost media
Bro. I'm super shocked people managed to find the final boss of lost media
“WATCH OUT, THE WITCH IS IN THE HOUSE”
This is a legendary moment
we finally have the full episode released now we need is the infamous Snuffy's mother and father divorce episode
I knew Sesame Street had crossovers in the past, with Star Wars and Game of Thrones for example, but I didn't know they did one with the Wizard of Oz, featuring the Actual actress playing the wicked Witch of the West.
My mom used to tell me this story about how when she was a little girl the Wizard of Oz would air every year around Thanksgiving and she would watch it with her family. But one year, on the day it was to air, she did something that got her in trouble with her mom and so she was told she couldn't watch the movie and had to stay in the next room over while it was on. So she was put in her time out in the next room, but her mom left the door open just a crack so that she could still watch it.
anybody else experience a wee floaty thing when watching this as a child
This is wicked!
This episode of Sesame Street aired 6 days before I was born.
Yes.
THIS IS AMAZING IF IT IS TRUE
It is true. I saw it the other day and I honesty barely understand why it upset so many people back in the 70s even though I know it was a different time.
Yeah I watched the episode as well and it was awesome I always wondered what made the episode so scary that it was banned and was lost for so long
I’d love to see this entire episode.
I'm still hoping for the color version of Episode 179 (1970) being found, like I know that the episode has already found, but the only existence of this which it is kinescoped in B&W.
hello blue
now i can watch this episode
i love how she was nice to judy garland on set.
I mean, it IS her broom, so...
Right? Whether she was being a bitch or not, he had no right to keep it
The more that I watch their interaction, the more that I am on David's side. I don't blame him for standing up for himself when her broom came down on him right up out of nowhere. Also, with it being 1976, letting her get away with treating him like dirt I guess would have only been a step backwards where treatment of African Americans is concerned. God bless you always!!! Holly in east TN (a girl who will forever love the late beautiful precious masterpiece of a gentleman who gave us David)
She also plays a very similar character in an Abbott and Costello movie…I forget which one
Please find the ghost footage of Sunnyvale toys r us now !!!!
Wow this was found? So great
Sesame Street traumatised me enough as it was without a scary witch being on it.
When she appeared as the Wicked Witch on Mr. Rogers, she didn’t wear the green make up.
I would swear I saw this as a child
you know I'm glad this saw the light of day in my lifetime, this wasn't very scary I don't know what the fuss was about
thanks for this video
Snuffleupagus was much scarier.
The weird thing, I was never afraid of the witch character than I was afraid of her transformation?! Lol I don't know why the moment the tornado touched down and people and cows were up in the air, the moment Elvira went from bike to broom I had to hide.
They should show this now anyway, also it's so sad how Judy Garland fell into the beer and drowned.
I WANNA SEE IT OMG IM A HUUUGE FAN OF YOU!!!!
The first horror movie of many kids childhood.
I thought I’d end up dying before this episode would be found, and I’m only 17.
