- Well, I cover the basics in under five. It will probably take you longer than that to work the steps. I took me months.Be that as it may, These 4 easy steps to clawhammer bliss should ease you into it. Get comfortable with each before moving on.
Keep the rhythm steady and solid. Rhythm is the heart of clawhammer and if you lose it, it all falls apart.
NO FLICKING THE FINGERS OPEN AS YOU STRUM DOWN. NO! BAD FINGERS! NO!
Note that if you complete step 4, not only are you rockin the clawhammer strum, but you have also played your first clawhammer song, "Bile them cabbage down" - Fitting since you were taught by Yopparai Kyabetsu (drunken cabbage) grin
Ask questions if you want, I will do my best to answer.
Chords for "Bile them cabbage down" G G C C G G D D G G C C G D G G
One of the best claw lessons on the Internet.
Generous, crystal clear and empowering. Greta teaching.
Brilliant. I've looked at lots of clawhammer tutorial videos and never been able to work out how the actions of the strokes fitted in with the timing of the beats because no one ever explained it so I've never got to grips with it. Within only 3 mins 31 secs you've made it all completely clear and now I get it :) Thanks :)
My favorite claw hammer ukulele lesson ever!
I can see it now: An army of clawhammering ukuleleist, all marking to my hypnotic bum-ditty beat. World Domination is MINE! RESISTANCE IS FUTILE! DALEKS ARE THE MASTERS OF THE EARTH! DALEKS ARE THE MASTERS OF THE EARTH! ... um..errr.... I mean...
Thanks Kenny!
Simple with no excess talk and showing off.. I love it.
Best explanantion of clawhammer that I've seen so far.
Started with your video about a year and a half ago on a ukulele doing claw hammer. Now I have a banjo too. Thank you so much, i'm really having fun with it now.
that you the humour and the break down of the technique so I can build it up in bits is fantastically useful. Thats mate
It last I understand it. Thank you so much for this video! Now I ll have to practice...
I am glad you are going to give it a shot! I will say that learning this was not easy for me. It just felt unholy pickin backwards.
Short practice sessions, long patience.
So clear ! I love lessons like that!
Thanks!
Great tutorial, that I often come back to if I need a 'refresher.' One other tip worth noting (apologies if someone else has already mentioned it). It's very important in clawhammer to play over or near the soundhole. Normally you strum your ukulele around the 12th fret; but in clawhammer you need more space beneath the string to allow your finger to 'dig in' on that first stroke.
Thank you for making this. You did a really good job of explaining it and in theory, I can try it out. I'm sure it will take lots of practice, but this is a good starting point.
It does take lots of practice. I know a lot of people have presented this lesson, but when I started on clawwing banjo, I watched just about every video out there.
Thank You you’re a great teacher.
I appreciate your help 🦄🌈
Thankyou after watching your video I am at last making headway with the claw hammer I can see improvement in a few days not fast but getting there.
A very clear and easy lesson. Thanks.
Fantastic. I have tried the clawhammer on some videos before, but yours seems easier. I am still not very good at getting the rhythm down yet, but I guess it takes a lot of practice.
Thanks.
This is great. Simply explained. Thanks.
Thanks, can't wait till this all clicks. Teaching technique is excellent.
Thanks. I was practicing along with it. Faved for future ref.
Thank you!
Excellent instruction! Thank you so much!
Well done! I think I can do it now. ( with practice)
Thaaank you so much!! i had a bet that i could clawhammer before my dad and you just helped me win :-D awesome lesson dude, cheers :-D SO PROUD OF MYSELF!!
Thank U very much Dear Yoppy!
@1962 - I think you are right on the money. Its hard to put my claw on. I think the down beats are on the beat - they pretty much have to be. For me the thumb anticipates the off-beat and sounds off just a tick early, giving it that swing. Try starting with a steady 1-2& and then vary the thumb, from playing it immediately after the finger brush, to holding it off and playing it just before the next down beat. That sweet spot is in there, and when you find it you will feel it. Stick with it!
Great tutorial Yoppy! If I wasn't such a lazy student I'd learn it right away!
Thank you
Yoppy, thanks for sharing this with us. I was actually going to ask you how. I'll add it to fav and plactice later :)
Great tutorial: thank you! Well-taught!
Claw hammer in 3 and a half minutes. Class tuturial
Thanks Yopps. I'm off to practice!
Short. Sweet. To the point.
Nice tutorial. Like the Baron, I'm too lazy. But I'll sit back and enjoy a beverage while someone else clawhammers away.
Thank you so much! :)
Awesome!! Thanks!!
@D.O.N and late at night, if you listen carefully in the darkness, you can still hear his voice calling, "Clawhammer.... CLAWHAMMER..."
Great lesson! Gonna get practising :)
Thank you.. Very good lesson :D
Very nice!
Top Tip ... if you use your index finger (and most people do), leave that fingernail slightly longer than the rest when you trim them. Personally, my index fingernail is quite long, all the others really short, and I use it as a plectrum for picking individual strings. (I would have posted a photo, but that's not possible on UA-cam comments)
Yep, I use mostly my index on ukulele, middle on banjo. I don't grow long nails, but I do like to have them clear the fleshy tip of my picking finger. I know a lot of clawhammer folks that either keep a long nail, or use press-on or acrylic nails.
@TerryUkesHappy to help!
Thanks for that Yoppy! Maybe I learn it this time... :)
So much #ukulele to learn.
Woot!! Thanks!
Best of luck to ya. This is the only hard part about the style. Once you get this, its all gravy.
I am so excited! Clawhammer uke!! YEAH! T:)
@Krabbers I am playing G C G D, but I am capoed at the second fret, AND I am probably not at standard tuning. The former is because my uke is easier to play in tune at the second fret. The latter i can only apologize for as I didn't think about it before starting.
@sabadsneakers Yep, for clawhammer its all down. If you up pick the melody note, it becomes something called the Seeger strum.
Next time I do a how to I will remember to tune my ukulele to standard.
You know exactly how to simplify a lesson...to include the chording hand (in this case) would just muddle this specific lesson on claw-hammer strum.
tks great lesson come too late for me to do now
@Little6ster and Thank You!
I grew up hearing Stringbean and Grandpa Jones play clawhammer banjo, but am just discovering clawhammer for uke via Richard Hefner. Thanks so much Yopparai Kyabetsu for unlocking the secrets of clawhammer uke for a newbie. Maybe I will give it a try! If you can't find the chords, they are in the description above, but they are way at the bottom, so you have to "Show more."
Nice
I'm with Amanda on this one. The pattern no problamo. When I speed it up something else changes and it's driving me NUTS! I'm ready to clawhammer something and it aint the banjo either!
@panamagal77 You are very welcome.
Just a wee bit each day. it will come!
Thank you for this wonderful lesson, and trust me I will not be trying to chew gum at the same time LOL
So clear!
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEES
@BaronK *grin* I hear ya.
This is so, so super awesome! But it would help considerably to know WHAT chords you're playing! (not that easy to get hem just by googling the song). Pretty please?
Corrina Maslanka hmm.. Probably G C G D. Yeah, that sounds right.
@UnluckyMum Yesh, yesh it is. But it is the hardest thing. Once its out of the way there is really only one other challenge for clawhammering, And I know plenty of people that dont use it. (drop thumb, that is)
@deach This time of year I might suggest a nice hot chocolate.
@ukeshale I hope it helps!
@keonepax Thanks!
Thanks for the great lesson. One question - when I'm playing the sing note before the strum, do I pick up or down? My fingers wants to instinctively strum up on the first string for that note but something tells me that it's a bad habit.
it would be really useful to know what chords/inversions you are playing.
For the exercise, the chords are not important, but if memory serves, I was playing G C G D G C G D G, which works out to 'Bile dem cabbage down'
Y'all get busy!
hard
What are the chords for boil the cabbage down?
What tuning is the ukulele in and what chords are you playing?
Think I could do this with a low g string?
Are you in Japan?
Texas or Ireland??? hmmmmmm...that's a hard one cuz Ireland has some GOOD music..
BUT
someone has to stay in Texas and keep things going....
T:)
Yeah.. ahhh.. how the hell are you doing that ?? 😁
Why is it that alcohol makes people better teachers...
That is SUCH an excellent lesson. Too bad the irritating and distracting background noise couldn't have been turned off for those few minutes.
