From NIH: Currently, much of the toxicity data available for PFAS are for a handful of chemicals, primarily legacy PFAS such as perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluorooctane sulfonate. Epidemiological studies have revealed associations between exposure to specific PFAS and a variety of health effects, including altered immune and thyroid function, liver disease, lipid and insulin dysregulation, kidney disease, adverse reproductive and developmental outcomes, and cancer. Concordance with experimental animal data exists for many of these effects.

Jed, thank you for your continuing effort to bring this to the attention of the public. It is my hope that these non-stick chemicals will be eliminated from kitchen cookware someday. It is odd that if these chemicals were in your food they would be banned, but if they are in the vessel in which you prepare your food they are not. It doesn't seem to make any sense from a health standpoint. Thanks again for keeping us informed.

I recently had a conversation with a family member about this exact thing. They were saying this popular pan on amazon was fine with no teflon. I pointed out this very thing but not as detailed as you just did. Great video. With sharing

Finished PTFE is stable and nontoxic if kept under 500F. It rocks as a nonstick surface. The concern here is manufacture, particularly the surfactant precursors which were comically mishandled and disposed of (and probably still are sometimes). Teflon is an awesome thing if used correctly and a dangerous one if not--just like many of the other things we interact with every day. PTFE possesses properties no other room temp solid does and is therefore used in so many applications you aren't going to eliminate it from this world by not buying some pans. The most effective thing that can happen is regulating manfacture and handling of it.

Jed, found your videos years ago and trashed all my Scan pans. I now love my carbon steel and cast and use them every day. Just fried three eggs perfectly in my De Buyer, thanks to you.

Fine, you convinced me. Only two things I use that are non-stick is the non-stick in my air fryer. Going to be painful to get rid of that since I love air frying food in there a few times a week. And my non stick pan from Misen. Which I use once every two weeks maybe.

I knew it was bad, didn't realize how bad - that the whole family of chemicals are unhealthy to a certain degree. I've been non-stick free for several years now, in fact just got a new stainless sauteuse yesterday, going to try it out this evening.

Your words are truth!Greatly appreciated Jed. I wish cast iron, carbon steel & stainless steel were low maintenance for my busy life. If anything, I would try the OXO carbon steel since you hinted that it cools faster.

Thanks Jed! Thanks for bringing all the concerns regarding disposable cookware to the communities attention. Question from my end; I currently have a halogen hob at home, and it works well for most of my cooking needs. I was considering a portable induction cooktop. Any brands / models you would recommend? I want to avoid cheap ones that could end up warping my cookware. Thanks again! 👍

Very interesting. I have a feeling a similar situation is happening with “BPA free” plastics.

  • @shigemorif1066

I’ve always found the PFOA free advertising to be very sketchy. And, tbh, I feel the same way about “ceramic” cookware. They greenwash the packaging so much, but it’s hard to find info about the sol-gel “ceramic” coating. I wouldn’t trust it either.

Thank you for this. Dark Waters is an amazing movie - an eye opener and scary.

It's all about money. No one, not companies and certainly not government, give a crap about consumers safety. They only care about getting your hard-earned money. SAD!

  • @victoriasrandomstuff

All I cook with is iron or steel. I heat up leftovers in my mothers old corningware. I have not even owned anything Teflon since I got birds 20 years ago. Don't even miss them.

  • @paulhughes3961

They should outlaw all forms of Teflon , full stop! Why don't they use enamel coatings which are safe and pretty much nonstick.

  • @kriscarreon14

Are there any cookware sets that you recommend that won't break the bank?

  • @fisherman2359

Unfortunately a lot of things around us are carcinogenic.

  • @sgtSerGUNt

But is seasoning bad for your health?

you can say whatever you want, I will never again get stuck washing those stupid heavy cast iron pans. I'll buy and use and throw out and re-buy non-stick pans. Cast iron is junk and belongs in the 1800s.
