What really stood out to me in this video is how Li and D'Arcy actually share the same perspective on network effects for social networks - the problem of network congestion with scale - D'Arcy takes the example of crowded public transport for geographies and Li takes the example of spam in your news feed (unable to maintain that closeness with your connections that made you join the network) - fantastic as always
This one is much better, no catsup. As a startup CEO who collects data, I learned to not make a big deal about any insights or “data network effects” until they have proved out as a competitive value proposition.
Great job describing what shouldn't be attributed to the network effect (brand, awareness, early investment, etc.) which are also present in any type of business. However, by the same token, the examples you mentioned that cause the effect to decline (trolls, or nieche networks) shouldn't be attributed to the network effect either. Trolls (bad actors) might look for any prominent business as a target. Also, if a network becomes broad/mainstream the need for niche products (sub-networks) will arise like any other mainstream product. So, not everything that causes a business to grow is caused by the network effect and neither are the things that cause it to decline. You are right that network effects don't last forever, but by themselves I think they plateau due to saturation rather than decline.
Im glad negative aspects of network effects are mentioned. #deleteuber is a relevant example here. Maintaining reputation becomes more important as you get larger and subsequently harder because you're trying to differentiate yourself as you grow.
The best network effect advantages are also vulnerable to herd stampedes and spawning Canibal nodes. New issues that arise based upon the success of said network.
You prolly dont give a shit but does someone know a tool to log back into an Instagram account?? I was dumb lost my login password. I would love any assistance you can give me!
@Cooper Rylan Thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and Im in the hacking process atm. Takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Data network without verification and integrity (requiring a feedback loop) with contextual relevance is of little to no value. Li Jin and D'Arcy Coolican are excellent but are distinctly different in their perspectives and thought objectives. Obviously, Li Jin perspective is that of an entrepreneur, while D'Arcy's perspective is that of a Corporate executive.

Wow, Li is extremely impressive.
Yes, she is.

I agree, but that comes with any business. With a network effect or not.

Why does she claim that Yelp has a strong data network effect?
