Donkey Kong 64 TAS v2 [2020]

This is an any% TAS of the N64 version of Donkey Kong 64. Unlike console any% runs of this game, this run starts with a fresh cartridge, which means no Mystery Menu features are pre-unlocked (such as DK Theater Intro Story). Starting with these features saves on the order of 4.5 minutes. However, starting with dirty SRAM (un-timed cartridge progression) is against standard TAS practice, less entertaining, and can be controversial. If you're curious, I plan to video-splice together parts of this run to show what it would look like with a console-like ruleset in the near future.
This run is 50.77 seconds faster than the previous iteration thanks to phasewalking, a new route to skip the orange barrel, and various other optimizations.

Emulation on BizHawk isn't perfect, notably around lag and loading, but DK64 emulation is miles ahead of what it was a few years ago.

I love the fact that while Mario has the potential to go through parallel universes by jumping backwards really fast onto certain geometry and corners, DK can just decide when he feels like walking through walls.
Edit: Turns out the kongs can just bend reality to their will.

It has to do with camera rotation and how collision detection works (or doesn't work). Camera rotation causes the kong's collision to not update and moving in a certain direction while briefly maintaining this rotation allows you to go out of bounds. There's a recent video explaining how it works but I can't remember where I saw it. It's not an easy trick, but it's doable by humans, if I recall correctly.

Been casually breaking this game for a few years now, but this TAS is a whole new level! Saw Bismuth's video explaining it, and decided to watch it in real time. The movement at 3:12 has to be my favorite. Great work :)
When DK is attempting to listen his favourite music at 9:15 - 9:42 but he cannot because the green bird order him to work unfortunately and not letting having his relaxing-ass time...

That was a jumpscare as a kid, and I still hate it to this day. I remember one time I tried using Diddy's Rocket to head to K Rool's Island from DK's, and then this soon showed up, then fell straight down. Lol
I had a friend that was scared of this also. He'd literally run out of the room whenever i did it with Diddy
I love how each character has their own glitchiness, like DK's moon jump, the other Kongs' weirdness like being able to go to the crowd, backwards running, etc., Tiny Kong's exitstence, you know. It's cool to see.

Honestly, the thing that really blew my mind about the TAS was that DK's Treehouse is considered by the game to be his cage... anyway, what I'm really curious about is the Troff n Scoff K Rool Early glitch. I know it crashes on N64, but if a TAS was done in a way that imitates what is possible on Wii U, would it be faster than this route?
The current method of K Rool Early that works on Wii U is not faster, since it doesn't work with Main Menu Mode and so you would need to spend a lot of time unlocking moves. The method that is compatible w/ MMM and would save time is not possible on Wii U since it requires some lag. So while you could in theory do it on emulator to save time, it doesn't work on either console, so it is a bit silly.
The Kong was put under house arrest there but they forgot to give him an ankle bracelet! 😉

My guess is that it was originally a code to give you GBs / clear B. Locker that they later removed the functionality for.

Fairies/rambi unlock the rambi arena which is used to unlock moves to beat K Rool.
