Hi everyone, I didn't write a script this time, instead I fumbled my way through this video spontaneously and removed the awkward bits later. ;-) Also, the smaller EX7 can do FDSP as well, but with 8 voices only instead of 16.
@@mr_floydst If I stayed where I was in Ontario, Canada I would have kept the EX 5, but I ended up moving to Canada’s East Coast, and I couldn’t keep it (at least I felt I couldn’t keep it) but yes it is definitely a great synth, I even told a Canadian Yamaha rep I found the EX 5 to be a more expressive synth than the Yamaha Motif (I personally thought the Motif was flat sounding, she was surprised by that I preferred the EX 5 over the Motif)
Thanks for the videos. Tornado is basically waveshaping like SHAPER on a Kurzweil. If you start with a simple input like a sawtooth or a sine you can get some nice FM-ish tones.
I personally liked the water effect of the FDSP, especially with pad sounds when I had the EX 5 (I sold it, it was to big to take with me for a cross country move)
Thank you for this! I have an EX5R bought new in 1998. I love the way it sounds. I still use it today. It has a bug with dumping some types of sysex data over MIDI -- I could never get it to work with my synth patch library software. And I even upgraded the roms at one point. But I would not give up this synth -- there's something about it. I think people are finally starting to discover this cool synth.
I purchased an EX5R about six years ago for less than € 500 to add it to my vintage samplers rack (Roland Fantom XR, Roland 5080, AKAI S6000) and I have to say that I love its patches and created a few, mostly percussive, myself.
Thanks for the demo. Is it my imagination or is the EX5 having a renaissance of sorts? 15 years ago it was almost impossible to find any videos on UA-cam showing the EX5 now there’s a bunch. I guess it’s because it’s officially 25 years old. I still have my EX5 that I bought new in 1999. I maxed the RAM, Flash with last Firmware and replaced the 3.5 Floppy for a SCSI 1 GB Zip drive. It’s been studio kept the whole time. Went from a SY77. I am primarily a guitar player and have used soft synths in the interim along the EX. However, I’m seriously looking at the new Montage when it’s released. At 59 years old I figure it will be the last hardware synth purchase I buy. Thanks again!!👍
Hi, thanks for commenting! Maybe that's the reason. I've been posting EX5 content quite regularly over the last 5 or 6 years, and as you, I'm eager to see what Yamaha has on offer with it's next Montage workstation! Oh, haha, there's always a time and a space for another synth. This is not an age related thing. Synth is life, synth is love or so they say. ;-)
I always want one of these in 1998 but they were expansive for a youbg guy like me. So I bought an CS1x instead. But then 2020 i see a EX7 for 360Eur in good condition... And what should I say, this thing is pure gold for a sound tinkerer.
Although I kind of was following new synth releases back in '98, I never heard of the EX5 until twenty years later or so. And wow, what an amazing synth. I think it took 5 years or so to discover and understand all the features built into this keyboard.
These sounds are SO good. My only minor criticism is too much tremolo depth on this sound at 20:00 . Wouldn't it be great if Floyd could make these patches into a preset EX5 VST?! I had a EX5, but it was just too big! I've looked at the rack, but its like $1,500-2000.
Hi, thanks for watching! These are not my patches - these are factory patches, though. If you like to use them as a VST, please take a look at the BlueBeast plugin by Gospel Musicians: gospelmusicians.com/products/bluebeast-2 on which I made a video ua-cam.com/video/nkTutBibDNw/v-deo.html
Thanks! EX5 is my master keyboard, so I use it every day. Mostly together with MPC One, which has some pretty great plugin synths / sampled instruments.
Hi Floyd! Lovely tutorial as always - any chance of a walkthrough on how you made the Abendstern and Obersync patches? Couple of really outstanding patches!
Hi! Yes, I've been a (silent) subscriber to your channel for quite some time now ;-) I'm afraid what you're seeing there is just some video trickery. 4k allows for some serious upscaling.
Dang that audio stutter when changing parameters with the jog wheel gave me audio Nastagia... I bought one of these in college, it was expensive for me at the time but I wanted to make electronic/IDM on it and I thought it would be an all in one machine. My attention was divided by school and other things and at the end of the day I couldn't figure out how to actually get it to do anything I liked. Not so much not being able to understand it on a technical level, it was more that I didn't have an understanding of workflow and I eventually sold it. I've been tempted lately to get one again just to see if I could make it work now that there are so many resources for learning how to actually create a track.
Hi, thanks for watching! The EX5 is a great synthesizer, but a horrible workstation ;-) You _can_ create tracks on this, but there are so many concessions you have to make to the underpowered CPU that you just end up recording track after track in your DAW (or use the EX5 to complement your other tracks). When building performance patches, a maximum of 2 can have their insert effects switched on, so all the other patches you use in your track will sound not as rich as they sound in single voice mode, for example. Also, using FDSP reduces your maximum polyphony greatly. If you're looking for a keyboard that's capable of creating tracks, the MODX is the better choice really. Or MPC, which has a superb sequencer and audio tracks. But then again, none of these can give you that feeling of nostalgia.
@@mr_floydst Thanks for the reply and info. I'm off that all in one bandwagon now. Interesting to hear it's difficult to use as a workstation. Buying gear while broke in the early 2000s was tough. With hindsight I would have been better spending my money on collecting Electribes or - if I had realized they where used to make some of my favorite tracks - learning to use a tracker. Benn Jordan's video on how he made music back then made me realize too that I probably could have made it work if I had too - I had too many other distractions and interests.
Hey Floyd great video as always! I have one question for you: How can I use the beautiful sounds of my Ex5 on the computer? Do I need an audio interface? Thx! ^^
Where to find the best patch dound libraries. Is it possible to add a faster cpu processor or memory to the ex5 to fix its sampler latency and outnof dsp power weakness.
Hi, you can find patches here: www.ex5tech.co.uk/patches.html or in the EX5 Facebook group facebook.com/groups/45885016014 No, you can't upgrade the CPU or DSP chips on the EX5. You have to use the known workarounds or accept it as what it is.
HOW DO YOU CONNECT TO THIS TO YOUR COMPUTER ( MIDI TO USB). I HAVE A BIG PROBLEM WITH THIS EX5 I CAN'T GET THIS TONES TO MY DAW DIRECTLY. PLEASE GIVE ME A SOLUTION FOR THIS PROBLEM.
NO NEED TO YELL :-) You'll need both a USB to MIDI adapter ua-cam.com/video/GAkgFD5mYgU/v-deo.html and an audio interface ua-cam.com/video/GAkgFD5mYgU/v-deo.html Connect the MIDI out of your cable to the MIDI in of the EX5 Connect the EX5's audio out to the audio interfaces input You then can send MIDI to the EX5 in any DAW and record the resulting audio to your computer.
Hi, thanks for watching - I saw those news but at the moment, it's all speculation. The pictures we saw seem to show some well-built hardware (all those lights are certainly helpful in dim places aka every stage set everywhere). If the AN-X engine is (like FM-X) improving on the AN1-X left and right and front and center, we're certainly in for a treat. Perhaps I should ask Yamaha if they can send one of their review models my way ;-)
I _could_ have bought this thing new if a) at the time, I had heard of it and b) if I'd had the money at the time. (Both is only hypothetically true). Which makes me an old potential synth owner. ;-)
@@mr_floydst There's actually a little joke in there. The old can refer to the synthesiser, but it can also refer to me - or to both. Thanks for sharing! Yes, any FM synth that can do a "0 hz" carrier can be used for waveshaping.
