Good info. I came looking for some insights on the modelling tech of the EX5 and glad to find someone has covered it, and more, in some really nice videos.
Thank you for posting this! Great sounds, and you really showed the aesthetic of the EX well in the video. I bought one of these just over a year ago. It's in really nice shape. As is often the case with me, I have had very little patience for diving into it. Yamaha-speak just confuses me and I hate menu-diving, so I've been using it's great keyboard as a controller for Reason. It is so powerful though. I'd like to get more acquainted with how it works, replace the floppy with USB, up the flash, and learn to program it. Thus far I've found the stock piano and Rhodes sounds modestly serviceable. I'm sure this thing is capable of so much more. I'll be checking out your videos for sure! Thanks again!
Best Synth demo on UA-cam. I have just bought an EX7, the lite version. They are amazing I paid around £200 for mine. So right, It is so heavy and big. thank you for sharing.
@@deauvillevrienden Haha, at the time, it was the first result for the search term "best synth demo" :-) Edit: now, it's this video by Doctor Mix: ua-cam.com/video/9XMfKYVu_fg/v-deo.html
The EX5 has flown under the radar of many. And my personal, biased perception has always been that Roland have always presented themselves as if their products were handed to humanity by the gods themselves. Fact of the matter is that Yamaha, after milking FM and the DX range to the point where it became silly, was a bit lost after the Korg M1. However, in the ensuing decade, they produced some of the most innovative, if not commercially successful, synthesisers; the VL-1 is probably the best known example. Yamaha also have a reputation for crazy synths, such as the GX-1, the DX-1 and the VP-1 (a polyphonic VL-1). The EX5 is not as rare as those, but it's a bit crazy nonetheless. Now, one thing to consider is that the workstation and sampling functionality of the EX5 are quite problematic. Especially loading from disc: loading the maximum 64 Megabyte of RAM takes something like 45 minutes. And that's over SCSI. Also, you very often get the "DSP resource full !!" error message when you combine two things that are incompatible (like AN and VL), which is very often. However, if you forget about all that, the EX5 is just a very, very good sounding instrument. And that, for me, is what the EX5 is all about. It's the ultimate performance synth. You can get so many and such beautiful sounds out of it, it'll keep you busy for the rest of your life.
Thanks for watching! I searched for something like scsi2sd for some time now, so thanks for your suggestion! I'll have a look at that. Uploading samples by USB floppy isn't that great.

Hi, thanks for watching! The Flash RAM will store you samples, even if you turn off the keyboard. If you intend to use the sampler / to use samples for Sound creation, this is a must-have. Most of the Patches can easily be loaded via floppy drive, but I suggest updating to a USB drive as shown in this and this ua-cam.com/video/-S9M7pu2LqY/v-deo.html video. The SCSI Interface is only needed for sample libraries which don't fit onto 1,44MB floppies. (most sound banks do not use external samples, so buying the scsi Interface is not mandatory). If you're referring to the sound which I'm playing the "melody" on: If I remember correctly, that's not a ring modulator. It's an LFO assigned to the volume of the first oscillator. I mapped the LFOs' speed to the mod wheel. When I push it to the maximum setting, the LFO is so fast that it's frequency can be heard.
oh how funny! i thought it was the ring modulator! (oops) it sounds quite reminiscent of the CS series like in this video: ua-cam.com/video/c5eZIdiEixE/v-deo.html macht's gut!
Hey floyd! Great vídeo! I wanted to learn how to use two tones together, could you tell me how I do this? 1 the timbre = strings pad "warmer" + Piano Thanks
@@7lreplay556 But that's the way it's done. In the video, I explain how to setup performance mode. Choose a string sound for the first instrument and a piano sound for the second instrument, then set the "range" for both sounds as desired. OK, perhaps I'll upload a video in the future showing how to do this :)
Hi, thanks for watching! You can download that sound at www.ex5tech.co.uk/patches.html - it's called "Piano Patch using stock EX5 Waves" or "Piano Patch using stock EX5 Waves with variations". Good luck! :-)
Small correction: it has a 76 key keyboard, not 73. Also, in addition to the two stereo jack outputs, there are two individual outputs, which are clearly visible when you're narrating.
Hi, thanks for watching. I not sure if I understood your question correctly. You need to know how to load sounds, or does your synth produce no sounds at all? If your EX5 turns on but there's no sound, first check - If your audio out is connected to an amplifier and the amplifier and the EX5 are turned on; - make sure the volume slider on the left side is located somewhere half the way up - you selected a sound that doesn't depend on a breath controller - if you have a volume pedal attached make sure it's all the way up - if all of that doesn't help, do a factory reset www.harmonycentral.com/forums/topic/178001-how-do-you-initialize-the-ex5-or-7-again/ - the original discs can be found on www.ex5tech.co.uk
Floyd Steinberg My dad had actually let me have his old equipment and I’m trying to learn how to use everything. It’s kinda difficult because they really don’t have many videos on the Yamaha ex5
@@gabriellemiller2133 Ah ok. Well, the EX5 has no internal speakers. You need headphones or an amplifier to use it. And I have made a number of videos on that keyboard, but most of them are for people who want to program sounds. Perhaps I should do one for people who are new to hardware synths... Thanks for your input! :-)
In 480p the audio track has tons of artifacts from compression. View this video in 720p minimum. Even then there are artifacts and aliasing. Don't think it's the EX5.
Hi Alex, really nice vid - if you don't mind me asking, where did you get the patches from or are they all your own work? I would love them in my EX5R :)p Danke!
hi, thanks for watching, bitte. ;-). most of the patches can be found in the faqcebook group. there' s a new webpage out there replacing the ex5tech.com site... will look up the address later. they have lots of patches
Hi, thanks for thy comment ;-) I useth an AKAI EWI USB controller and a VOX Starstream guitar (in older videos, there's also a Casio MG-510 or a Yamaha EZ-EG). Best regards!
hey - can i ask you HOW you got the FDSP ring mod to map onto the mod2 wheel?? I just figured out how to access and control the ring mod but was only able to enter fixed values - i guess i will learn eventually but i was just hoping you might give me a hint - i guess it's controllable somehow under the general control setup but it's not so obvious to me
I made 2 other videos creating patches (AN and AWM) where I show how to assign the controls (they are somewhere on my profile page) But I guess you've saved yourself half an hour of viewing time now. :-)
no - i watched those at least a few times but thought (as it seemed since there was a separate section in the manual) that FDSP functioned differently ... though now I am struggling with trying to get the six assignable controllers to do something useful for me. It seems they only function in a preset way (using functions 38-44 or something as i read in the manual) - i thought there was more control than that - but i think i will watch your other videos again now in case there are some good clues there - thanks!
Hi Floyd...I’ve got two EX5’s, one of them the rack mount version. I’m running them with Reason DAW... Is it worth linking them up through midi? What are the possibilities? Thanks...Chris
Hi Chris, thanks for watching! Well, having 2 VL voices or 4 AN voices is nice to have. But I see no benefit in linking them directly as opposed to linking both of them to your DAW. It could be useful for creating perfomances to use in live situations, though. Best regards!
Yes that makes sense, playing live with two could be interesting , if I ever get around to doing that again😄Thanks for replying and love the channel, your tunes are great...I think I’ll have a go at getting your patch set from the link. Cheers, Chris.😃
Hi, thanks for watching! I don't think you can load them directly ( I never tried, perhaps other users know more? ) - but www.xfactory-librarians.co.uk/ can load AN1 sounds and save them as EX5 patch files. You can also find a lot of converted sounds ready for download on www.ex5tech.co.uk and the EX5 facebook group. Hope that helps!
Was this model a fail simply because the instrument-buying public was not prepared for anything like it at the end of the 90s? It was due, since Korg came out with Oasys in 2005, and (if I’m not mistaken) Oasys was real successful at the exact same thing!
I think it was really expensive at the time, and for what it tried to do, it was severely underpowered. It's a great synthesizer but a horrible workstation: Your songs will lag and stutter once you use anything else but AWM in them. Changing the MIDI channels in a song or performance will pause all sounds for a fraction of a second, which is completely unacceptable for music entertainers. They fixed those issues in the MOTIF by seperating the synth engines to hardware extension cards, but dropped the FDSP engine in the process. All of this is very unfortunate because they had some great ideas for the sequencing stuff (you can assign any pattern you recorded to any key on the keyboard, e.g.). I'll do a video on these shortcomings if I feel like spilling out some negativity some day. ;)
Hi, thanks for watching! No, it's not an FM synth. It can do basic FM through some of it's FDSP effects and virtual analog routing, but that's nowhere as complex as what the SY77 is capable off. That being said, the EX5 can do a lot of things other synths can't and won't ever try again. Turning a blast of noise into a guitar sound by tweaking an FDSP flanger effect, for example, or applying 16 filters at once in one patch. ;-)
It's a "gotek usb floppy emulator". I made a video on that one, too: ua-cam.com/video/-S9M7pu2LqY/v-deo.html You'll find all the links in the video's description. Oh and thanks for subscribing, much appreciated. :-)
@@mr_floydst hey I have a crazy idea. I know people have bonus extended floppy disk drives with the extra patches. Do you think those same patches sounds of samples are available for download and could I just put it on a USB stick?
Thanks! I took note. :-) But I only spelled out the patch names the original creators gave them. (These are patches found on the EX5 facebook group, only the ones in the beginning were mine).
Hi, thanks for watching! The "Simplicity 3" piano is part of a patch bank which was once available on the ex5tech.com site. You can find it in the ex5 facebook group at the moment.
I have one of these, but the keybed is really worn, is there a way to replace the springs for the keys to make them snappier and offer more resistance to playing?
Hi, thanks for watching! Let me google that for you ;-) syntaur.com/Items.php?Item=KEYSPA I bought some spare parts from them but I heard they're out of stock. Replacing the springs shouldn't be too difficult… But be prepared to remove a lot of screws.
Thanks for watching! This is a very old synth, so it has no USB connection. But of course you can set up your DAW to react to the MIDI inputs of this synth. Might be a bit of work and trial&error, though.
I've had this traumatic experience with the EX5. I bought one unit in a rather nice condition for $1250 + $400 for the 16MB flash ROM (or RAM, whatever you call it). Then, when I was selling it at Guitar Center, the hipster dealer told me there's no market for it, and he gave me $150 for my EX5. I did better on the Juno-106, because he gave me $500 for it. I had paid for that one $1,200, also very nice shape with all 6 voices working flawlessly. Anyway, I digress. I took a big hit on those instruments. And while I am not regretting selling the Juno-106, I kind of regret selling the EX5. Now there's one on eBay from Japan, for $2,382, sporting the flash ROM. With Shipping and tax it is $3,029. Looks like a nice condition, but it's a lot of money. By the way, I find it curious, that you have such an in depth knowledge of this synthesizer, and yet you seem to insist it has 73 keys. :)
Thanks for watching and sharing your story. Man, I can relate to that. :-( And well, uhm, my videos are full of mistakes and funny english pronounciation, especially the older ones. ;-)
Actually I meant to call it the heroin slow bob- the tempo has that ghetto stoop feel also. Remember there are white ghettos too so don't go "racial". Ask a professional choreographer to respond to your pattern and tempo and you'll know by the moves engendered just what I'm talking about. It isn't a slow stroll tempo but a stupefied stumble like a person on hard dope.
This is a high quality demo. Thanks for uploading, Cheers.

oh how funny! i thought it was the ring modulator! (oops) it sounds quite reminiscent of the CS series like in this video: ua-cam.com/video/c5eZIdiEixE/v-deo.html
macht's gut!
Hey floyd! Great vídeo!
I wanted to learn how to use two tones together, could you tell me how I do this?
1 the timbre = strings pad "warmer" + Piano
Thanks
Hi, thanks for watching! I made a video on how to setup the performance mode: ua-cam.com/video/EP2YSGHN-fo/v-deo.html
No is sequênce!
Is Mode, Split, layer, etc
@@7lreplay556 But that's the way it's done. In the video, I explain how to setup performance mode. Choose a string sound for the first instrument and a piano sound for the second instrument, then set the "range" for both sounds as desired. OK, perhaps I'll upload a video in the future showing how to do this :)
@@mr_floydst ok thanks teacher!
Hello Floyd! :) Is the gp simplicity3 at 4:29 factory sound, or did U modified?
thx 4 your videos, cheers! :)
Hi, thanks for watching! You can download that sound at www.ex5tech.co.uk/patches.html - it's called "Piano Patch using stock EX5 Waves" or "Piano Patch using stock EX5 Waves with variations". Good luck! :-)
@@mr_floydst Thank U, Sir! :)
Small correction: it has a 76 key keyboard, not 73. Also, in addition to the two stereo jack outputs, there are two individual outputs, which are clearly visible when you're narrating.
Thanks for your feedback! Yeah, that correct.
Would you please help me understand how do I get to be able to actually play on my keyboard . I inserted the floppy disk and it’s still no sound .
Hi, thanks for watching. I not sure if I understood your question correctly. You need to know how to load sounds, or does your synth produce no sounds at all? If your EX5 turns on but there's no sound, first check
- If your audio out is connected to an amplifier and the amplifier and the EX5 are turned on;
- make sure the volume slider on the left side is located somewhere half the way up
- you selected a sound that doesn't depend on a breath controller
- if you have a volume pedal attached make sure it's all the way up
- if all of that doesn't help, do a factory reset www.harmonycentral.com/forums/topic/178001-how-do-you-initialize-the-ex5-or-7-again/
- the original discs can be found on www.ex5tech.co.uk
I didn’t have my amp or speaker connected but thank you so much for the help
Floyd Steinberg My dad had actually let me have his old equipment and I’m trying to learn how to use everything. It’s kinda difficult because they really don’t have many videos on the Yamaha ex5
@@gabriellemiller2133 Ah ok. Well, the EX5 has no internal speakers. You need headphones or an amplifier to use it. And I have made a number of videos on that keyboard, but most of them are for people who want to program sounds. Perhaps I should do one for people who are new to hardware synths... Thanks for your input! :-)
Floyd Steinberg oh okay cool beans and definitely. I would watch them all . That would be great 🙂
Also Floyd, where did you acquire the USB Floppy Emulator? When I get my EX5, I would like to put one in it. Thanks,
Just search on Amazon for "USB Floppy Emulator". You can buy the cheapest one (for around $20), it should work without any problems.
@@mr_floydst Cool. Thank you so much.
nice video..excellent synth!
Thanks, yes, it is.
In 480p the audio track has tons of artifacts from compression. View this video in 720p minimum. Even then there are artifacts and aliasing. Don't think it's the EX5.
That's right, best viewed in 1080p, and even then there are notable artifacts.
Thank-you for sharing this information wooow
wow nice CS ring modulator
i just bought one based on this demo alone - well - i heard lots of others but this was the most inspiring for me :)
Ahh, I see where the old ex5tech has gone then - yes that would be great, Vielen Dank! :-P
www.ex5tech.co.uk/
Easy one then! Prost ;)
What’s thee Midi Guitar and Midi Wind Controller you are using?
Hi, thanks for thy comment ;-) I useth an AKAI EWI USB controller and a VOX Starstream guitar (in older videos, there's also a Casio MG-510 or a Yamaha EZ-EG). Best regards!
hey - can i ask you HOW you got the FDSP ring mod to map onto the mod2 wheel?? I just figured out how to access and control the ring mod but was only able to enter fixed values - i guess i will learn eventually but i was just hoping you might give me a hint - i guess it's controllable somehow under the general control setup but it's not so obvious to me
i assume it's coarse sub pitch (FDSP name) you're controlling with mod2?
OOPS! never mind - it was right under my nose - haha
Hey Floyd, is it true that the EX5R can load AN1X Patches ? How does it works ? THANKS !
Have and DX synthesis i thing?
No, it's not an FM synth (unfortunately). You can use FM on samples, though.
I'll do a video on these shortcomings if I feel like spilling out some negativity some day. ;)
You know something, Floyd Steinberg, you could do a comparison between the two models.
Does the EX5 do fm as well as the sy77 ?
Hi, thanks for watching! No, it's not an FM synth. It can do basic FM through some of it's FDSP effects and virtual analog routing, but that's nowhere as complex as what the SY77 is capable off.
That being said, the EX5 can do a lot of things other synths can't and won't ever try again. Turning a blast of noise into a guitar sound by tweaking an FDSP flanger effect, for example, or applying 16 filters at once in one patch. ;-)
@@mr_floydst it sounds really interesting and some of the patches I’ve heard you play sound incredible
Hey @floyd what's the name of the usb drive?
It's a "gotek usb floppy emulator". I made a video on that one, too: ua-cam.com/video/-S9M7pu2LqY/v-deo.html You'll find all the links in the video's description. Oh and thanks for subscribing, much appreciated. :-)
@@mr_floydst hey I have a crazy idea. I know people have bonus extended floppy disk drives with the extra patches. Do you think those same patches sounds of samples are available for download and could I just put it on a USB stick?
@@mr_floydstis there any way to improve the piano or the Ep
Hi Joshua, you can download these patches on the ex5 facebook page and indeed save them to a USB stick.
There are some (in my opinion) great EP and Piano patches by a guy named "ski" on the facebook user group. The patch pack is called "Simplicity"
I love your Videos! But at 4:19 you should have to say BC1 - BC3,
I still have a BC1, it's a bit uncomfortable but it works! ;-)
Thanks! I took note. :-) But I only spelled out the patch names the original creators gave them. (These are patches found on the EX5 facebook group, only the ones in the beginning were mine).
Hi Alex, Is the "simplicity 3" your own patch or is it a factory one?
Can it control DAW?
:-( And well, uhm, my videos are full of mistakes and funny english pronounciation, especially the older ones. ;-)
Dear Mr.
Please can you give me your mail, I want to ask you some questions. I would appreciate.
Best regards
Please join the Facebook Group for Yamaha EX5. facebook.com/groups/45885016014/ I'm on there.
So what to call the drum pattern. I call it the heroin addict nod.-
Not quite sure what to make of this comment ;)
Actually I meant to call it the heroin slow bob- the tempo has that ghetto stoop feel also. Remember there are white ghettos too so don't go "racial". Ask a professional choreographer to respond to your pattern and tempo and you'll know by the moves engendered just what I'm talking about. It isn't a slow stroll tempo but a stupefied stumble like a person on hard dope.
