      Thanks, Woody. ;-) The same goes for me, watching your videos, your timing is always on spot, not only musically, but also regarding flow of the videos.

    Awesome video on synthesis and the EX5. I really like the music video at the end. Very relaxing, sweet, and soft.

    One of my all time favourite synths, despite its short comings, still sounds fantastic

      Thanks for watching! Agreed - this definitely one of my favourite synths, too. The FDSP stuff (and AWM) takes years to explore.

    Good quality video Floyd! I'm impressed with the many things you can do with the EX5.
    Even though I don't own one myself, this was still interesting to watch :).

    This truly is a hidden gem in the EX5. I almost think that manufacturers like Yamaha around this time frame realized "Whoa wait, we're giving away waaay too many things in one piece of equipment!"
    I know its only 2-OP but it IS beautiful!

      Thanks for watching! I feel the same way. Tiny desktop synths that offer a very limited approach to synthesis are all the rage now, but if you buy all of them, you end up using the same space and money as buying one of those 90s workstations.
      BTW there was a follow-up to this video in which I explored the FDSP FM synth in the EX5, which is more flexible and lets you create all those classic FM sounds. ua-cam.com/video/hatglf9l28Q/v-deo.html

    You know when the synthesis class will be "root" when you see an oscilloscope connected to the audio output! Great job ! And by the way, what a beautiful "black beast" you have :) Regards !

      Thanks for watching! It's still blue, but the lighting somewhat changed the hue. :)

      Thanks for watching! Making these videos and trying to improve the skills necessary (lighting, english pronounciation, technical know-how, camera settings, sound, pacing) is fun. I think there's still a lot of headroom for improvement in my videos ;-)

    The big disadvantage of AN synthesis in the EX5 is the limited polyphony. So it's good that the AN1x exists, which fills that gap. With those two, you cover about every synthesis method that Yamaha has ever devised, with the exception of 4+ operator FM (putting the FS1R in the big FM pile).

    • @mr_floydst
      @mr_floydst  Рік тому +1

      Hi, thanks for watching! On EX5, you can use internal sampling, though, to turn your AN patches into AWM patches. It's a work-intensive process, though, and just having 10 or more voices of polyphony is definitely nicer. ;-)

    • @SeverityOne
      @SeverityOne Рік тому

      @@mr_floydst Plus, the AN1x is a relatively simple little synth. There's Free EG, and an extensive mod matrix, but compared to the EX5, programming it is like driving a Tesla with Autopilot vs driving a Formula 1 car.

      I agree - interface on EX-series is much better than on AN1x. I guess they tried to bring cost down and decided to reuse cheap casing, screen and controls from CS1x/CS2x. If they would opted for better solution, AN1x could dominated VA market IMO.

    • @SeverityOne
      @SeverityOne 8 місяців тому

      @@serhiymarchenko8361 Actually, what I meant was that the AN1x is much easier to program, or at least, easier to understand. The EX5 has a _lot_ of parameters per part, and four parts per voice. But indeed, the interface of the AN1x could have been much better.

    • @serhiymarchenko8361
      @serhiymarchenko8361 8 місяців тому

      @@SeverityOne I’m sorry for misunderstanding. AN1x is easier synth, but having 8 “banks” of 8 encoders and also some parameters changing using up/down buttons never invited me to edit. I have used old AN1xEdit application to overcome that. It does sound great and is very powerful synth.

    I'd love to see a video on the VL stuff, but making stranger sounds, not emulative ones

    • @mr_floydst
      @mr_floydst  5 років тому +1

      Thanks for watching and thanks for your suggestion. I will definitely do that in an upcoming video! (in fact, I already had one track with a VL lead which sounded "analog synth like", but I forgot which one ;-) )

      Floyd Steinberg I don’t want analog like either. Get WEIRD! Haha

    A shame the AN polyphony is so low on the EX5.

    • @mr_floydst

      I wished it has higher, too (5 to 8 voices would be cool). Still hoping for a new workstation which can do all these things but with 2020's tech. But that would propably be a very expensive machine. (I know that these machines exist and are called "iPads", @Fernando - hahaha) ;-)

      @@mr_floydst or kronos 😋. Just take the plugin mod7 of the Kronos (or the oasys), it’s a modular FM synth that can use virtual osc, sample externals or another internal kronos plug. All of it you combine together. it’s made for you 😎!

      @@ludovicBerquin Thanks for watching & commenting! Know what? Once this UA-cam "business" has raked in enough money, I'll buy a Kronos (the 73 key 2015 version, sometimes they're on ebay for 1500 bucks). Sometime next year, maybe. ;-)

    Looks like a lot of work for 1 voice of 2-op FM🤦‍♂️ Interesting tho. Can do on my Sub-37 too, with key-triggered audio-rate LFOs.

      Thanks for watching! You're right, it's a lot of menu diving. But then again, this video is uncut and the process took 6 minutes, which is kind-of-ok. 🙂 And it's two voices.
