      @@GardeningatDouentza i guess that's every gardener's drill 😆
And if you may answer this, i have started 5 clivia seeds and i saw root development in them a while ago but I don't see any shoot germination yet. Since you have clivias, i wondered if you can guide me as to how long does plumule germination in clivia takes and if i do need to do something special like pulling the germinating seeds higher up to aid in germination or something 😅 i was worried since it's been 20 days since root germination but yet there's no leaves.
      TIA!

@@oishd6077 Some seeds grow roots before top growth, as you already know. I am a great believer in leaving seedlings alone and allowing them to do what they are programmed to do so personally I wouldn't be moving them at all as the danger of damage is too great. In reply to your question, I have never actually germinated clivia seedlings myself. My second plant was grown from a seedling but my friend germinated it and gave me one of her spares. Do let me know how you get on. Always interesting!

No wonder my half seeds fail. Your only one to explain this properly. Also why not to pander to tiny ones. Survival of the fittest ! 🤣

I am glad the video was helpful. Years of experience ;-)
The only time you might favour the smaller seedlings over the bigger healthier ones is when you are sowing a packet of mixed colours. So for example, red snapdragons might grow stronger than yellow and pink might grow at a rate between the two. So, in this case, if you discard all the smaller seedlings you will be left with only red snapdragons. Hope this helps and happy growing.

Interesting plant.. I think I would be nervous looking after a plant with only 1 leaf....no backup plan! Although I see you make sure to have a plan B, C and D and even the "runts" of the litter.

That plant is funny neat. One leaf! And a big one at that.
Rachel I find myself keeping back ups in case the backs-ups don’t take 😁.
    So appreciate your gardening wisdom!!!

Having a lot of plants with one leaf compensates for the fact that, well, they only have one leaf. And having redundancies gives you the opportunity to sacrifice one or more to experiment with, well, leaf cuttings.

Yes, that is all true. I don't think the single-leaved streps can be propagated by leaf cuttings though. It's easy enough to collect seed. I'll have to set up a display of this strep when they all get big. Thanks for watching, Ben, and happy growing.

Wow, great video! I love this streptocarpus! Do u sell the seeds? It's pretty impossible to find here in America 🙁

Do you have a source for seed? I would love to give them a go! I couldn't see them on Dibleys website.

I originally bought seed from a private seller on Facebook. I don't know if he still sells it. If you send me a PM I can point you in his direction. He is in UK.

Is there a reason you use perlite and vermiculite?

On the lookout out for some but will stick to the hybrids for now. Thanks for the great tutorial ❤️

    "I only need one plant"
well, I guess you will have plenty to share down the road. Does the mother plant only flower once and then die?

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  3 роки тому

Yes, Michael, the plant flowers once and dies. I think most of the single leaf ones are monocarpic although there is a Dibley's scented hybrid called 'Sweet Melys' that is supposed to be perennial.
