- Paul Stanley of KISS talks about the New York music scene in the 70s, putting on the makeup, and more in this fun interview from 1984. Animalize, classic rock, heavy metal, hard rock, 80s rock, 70s rock, Gene Simmons
Paul Stanley is a legend. He's earned everything he's got.
They never declared they were virtuosos of their instruments. They were virtuosos of what they did.
100% agree. And their early albums were tremendous
@televinv8062 I never really caught on to most of their studio albums. KISS for me was always about the live shows, that's where they came Alive!.
@@jimmymac4559 Kiss Alive 1 was a fantastic live album. 👍🙏
My first rock concert , Judas Priest opened for them Hartford CT 1979
@@jimmymac4559 you are sooo right. Their beauty musically was in their simplicity but make no mistake...KISS knew what they were doing musically and VERY under rated as musicians
That is the first time I have heard him give a tip of the hat to the New York Dolls
He, Gene, and Peter have given credit to The Dolls a number of times. They're the ones who made me seek out the Dolls in the 70's.
@@jeffgraham9089 I've heard Ace & Peter talk about them, just had never heard Paul or Gene say anything good about them. I know Peter was friends with the Dolls drummer, and Ace with the Dolls bassist. It was great to hear him give credit though. I've seen the early pics of Kiss when they dressed like them, before they put on the makeup.
Yep… they don’t scream it from rooftops but they’ve been known to tip their hat to the New York dolls for many decades
I was very surprised when I read Paul's book 📖: he gave credit to Mike Quatro and to his sister Suzi Quatro👍
Gene talked about the dolls alot
Kiss always rocked. Their stage shows were the best.
Never cared what the " Critics " said !! KISS ROCKS !! 🤘 Probably jealous cause they didn't think of it first !! ✌️
😂
@@Awaywrdson I'm not putting KISS down at all, I'm just not a die hard fan
Of any band, but as a musician I appreciate talent
I think the bass in I WAS MADE FOR LOVING YOU is great
What a great group they are I love all of the music by kiss and their makeup I love you so much your 1 fan for life
I'm not a KISS fan but saw them 7 times but I can listen to Paul Stanley talk, he is a great talker
Not a fan but saw them 7 times...i hope you got in free
@@MENFUSSMIKE probably festivals.
@@MENFUSSMIKE actually I did get in free once when they were with arosmith😀
Of course you are a KISS fan.
When Paul fascinates you when he's talking, don't you think he fascinates you even more singing🎤and dancing💃.
It's nothing to be ashamed of.
Not a huge fan either. Some of the early stuff is great. But Paul knows his stuff. Saw them once. Got to sit in at a sound check on my lunch hour. That was cool.
Living in NYC. I always loved KISS and the Ramones!
"Don't forget the New York Dolls!"
Paul, when I saw you,
I forgot them totally.
Johnny Ramone used to shout out the NY Dolls.
Hottest band in the world!
What he says is correct 💯.
Ziggy Stardust was the biggest live glam rock show by 1972 on both sides of the pond. Lets give Bowie some credit here.
Ziggy was goofier than KISS
@@MENFUSSMIKE define goofy?
That question wasn't asked.
@@1968spikey exactly my point.
Don't forget Lou Reed and the influence of The Velvet Underground.
He certainly didn't forget Lou Reed. He worked on their album The Elder.
Amen. VU is in my Top 10 along with KISS
❤❤hello Paul love you
Blue Oyster Cult! Long Island
Because most of them are idiots!
Paul didn't compromise.
The critics made them idiots because of "The Elder".
Why should he compliment them?
When Paul said: "But it's honest!" the interviewer agreed: "Exactly". Your clip is incomplete.
Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers is the sound of NYC🎸☘️🎸
They worked their collective ASSES off to become successful. They would play anywhere someone could prop up a couple of sheets of plywood and call it a stage.
Totally a grass roots movement if there ever was one. Love them or hate them, you can’t deny them.
@@stormbringercoming8105 right on brother. KISS ALWAYS brought their show to the people unlike many famous bands where you had to travel to see them.
@@stormbringercoming8105 CORRECT!
The man is a genius
Yeah, but those bands didn’t sell over to 300 million records like kiss
He's pretty much nailedit, damn honest and astute.
👍
Oh Paul ❤
I’ll say this, I like makeup on my women, but as a teenage hardcore heterosexual, I was Ace for one cold Halloween night, and Stephanie was Paul….but blonde…
Victor was Gene, and Eddy, Peter…🤣
My first concert ever…
Sold out show and I got scalped…
for whopping $5!
I love you, Starchild ❤
Hey Paul, what about the really big bands to come out of NYC? Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads, you know, bands with some quality. I saw KISS twice, 1976 and 1979. The Destroyer tour show was awesome, the Dynasty tour show, not so much. Too many eight year old's with Ma and Pa in tow.
"Blondie" has quality?🤣
You are subjective!
@@bobschenkel7921 I agree these bands were awesome, but most of these bands did not receive any sort of respected recognition or legacy until after they broke up.
Too bad you could not tune out me and my dad. KISS Ruled in 79
Love The Starchild
Mention New York Dolls and not The Ramones?
Paul mentioned hundreds of musicians in his book.
I don't remember them all.
Capo pol❤❤❤
Muito lindo
Because no member of Kiss have ever been above average as musicians.
Bruce was pretty solid
I dont think virtuosity is required for rock music.
Bruce Kulick.. Eric Singer
@@shon9474 Agreed. Hey let’s not forget serious players such as Robben Ford, Anton Fig, Jimmy Haslip, to name a few, even played some ghost parts. But re the “band” I think Kulick and Singer were the most well rounded, professional players
Not true. As "average" musicians they never would have become influencial in music and inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Ace was the most influencial guitarist in Rock/Metal. Jimmy Page was no. 2.
KISS were the Beatles of the younger generation.
That’s back when Paul was a stud
Wasn't Alice Cooper wearing make-up before Kiss
THE SWEET had makeup before. Steve Priest looked like a girl💄
They certainly were inspirational too.
It's amazing how far someone with this little talent can make it.
Heard every single Kiss album. Never heard yours so your argument is irrelevant.
With "little talent" no one becomes a member of the "Billion Views Club" on Spotify.
He just trashes the two members of kiss who have talent especially Peter and Ace has always said he really doesn't think it's the best of them just Paul and Gene flexing their egos.
@@user-kg1qe9ry5g love Ace and Peter and always will, but can say without a doubt they couldn't keep themselves together. Reading both of their books was kind of an eye opener to me as of why Gene and Paul don't want them around. Ace openly admitted in the book to being too drunk to functure for most of his adult life. Peter's book was just okay at best because he comes off as very whiney and that would get on anyone's nerves if you had to be around that shit everyday.
Kiss' first few albums plus Kiss Alive 1 launched 10k bands minimum. Yes, they were that good.
Wayne / Jayne County and The Electric Chairs that KISS opened for in their early days
If paul saw this now and reacted to it he would probably say what a loud mouth i used to be😹
can't argue that most people who write in newspapers and magazines are idiots
Kiss Army
Everyone looked like they had flees in the 1970's. Alice Cooper put on make up before Kiss and so did David Bowie and lots of others. Kiss is a good kids band for kids. Children's entertainment.
Adults need entertainment too.
My uncle was in a band before kiss came out called the great legacy and they used black and silver painting their face and looking at old pictures I've noticed that kiss might have copied them they toured all over
BLUE OYSTER CULT
he sounded like seinfeld
David Johansen 😂
So damn killer.
Kiss was a target of critics because of their lack of musicianship. Yes they wrote great anthems and had a killer stage production but at the end of the day it’s more akin to putting lipstick on a pig. It is what it is. Never been a huge fan but I’m sure they are laughing all the way to the bank…I may be broke but I get to keep my integrity though lol
They're way more accomplished than they get credit for. Watch Unplugged.
What makes you think that the critics know more about "musicianship" than the people who enjoy it🎶?
The review about "Destroyer" wrote: "desentisized stupid" and a "ludicrous" ballad. Then "Beth" became a mega hit.
You shouldn't "idolize" the critics. Simply enjoy or at least respect the musicians.
What makes you think you have integrity, when you trust in destructive people and draw comparisons to "pigs"?
@@scotpetri7630 and they were a target based purely on how they looked and that they stood out from the crowd of other bands at that point.
You are talking utter crap here
I tried to listen to kiss I tried 🥺
He's right, critics are idiots. But not because they thought Kiss were crap, which they were. Take the special effects away and theres not much of a story! Every City is compared to NYC? And most cities kicks their ass!
Paul Stanley seemed a lot less gay back then. Am I right?
Paul seems pretty GAY N this clip 🤷♂️
Not Paul. Maybe you're gay?
I no longer respect gene & paul … but I like the early stuff & the Revenge album
Never a Kiss fan.. ‼️

Showmanship 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The only band that had fleas was the Red Hot Chili Peppers . C’mon !
they lost their ear to the streets in NY
I mean Kiss looked Cool , if it's Halloween . But their Music ain't that Great Overall . They had maybe 10 Good Songs out of a Couple of Hundred they Wrote over the last 50 Years .
Not really true, they have a load of great songs just take Dressed to kill, Destroyer or Love Gun, which are all solid albums.
You didn't listen!
I've heard this Albums Not too Memorable Really . They had ALOT of Gold Albums because of that Fact . They had some Platinum Albums , but not many .

But 10 good songs in 50 years sounds like you didn't listen.
They already had more than 10 strong songs on their first few albums before ALIVE! made them famous.
New York: Lou Gramm and Billy Joel.
Kiss music is pathetic. It deserves criticism.
F TO M
Instead of coming across as thoughtful & genuine, much of Paul's early interviews are tripe, filled with arrogance, dismissiveness & lacking of a single, thought-provoking, valid point.
Insecurities definitely were evident.
He wrote in his book about his deep insecurities.
@@HappyMachorino-bd8no
I know, brother.
I read it.
@@JayEm6885 he definitely did have a lot of insecurities, but most of us do when we're young. I'm just glad he was able to accept himself as he got older. That's true growth. That's how it's supposed to be.
@@JayEm6885
Paul's "arrogance" is self-defensive. A mask.
The critics made them look like idiots after The Elder. It hurts, and now he says they are idiots.
It's fair enough.
@@HappyMachorino-bd8no
Son, I've been a KISS fan LITERALLY since 1974, when the first album was released.
I'm well-versed on all things pertaining to the band - & you're incorrect in two assessments:
1.) The band were criticized WELL-BEFORE "...the Elder"
2.) Simply calling them "idiots" for having a opinion ISN'T justification
Kiss sucks
So you're only watching here because...?
The other bands look like they had fleas! Not us, no way, we wanted to be classy! So we dress like clowns?
If you want to insinuate all the musicians who use makeup💄 and costumes look like "clowns,"
then you must be a joke🤣.
Angus Young may still wear a schoolboy uniform. But an AC/DC album sold more than Michael Jackson's "Thriller".
And what have you sold?
Nothing!
@@HappyMachorino-bd8no what have I sold? I sold you an opinion that got you heated
"Like clowns"! This is not an opinion, it's derogatory. As I already tried to explain: there's no reason to disrespect musicians because of their outfit.
@@HappyMachorino-bd8no don’t get excited I’m just messing with you dude, my first favorite band was Alice Cooper, I read that they went and saw Alice Cooper, and said all four of us should dress like that, I have no problem with kiss, I only like a handful of their songs, but that’s typical with most bands, and most people, don’t get so kissed off !
KISS are such a terrible band, and terrible musicians and that’s why they needed makeup
And David Bowie was sooo terrible, and THE SWEET and they only became famous and legendary because of their makeup. Are you joking!🤣
@@HappyMachorino-bd8no no KISS member has any stand-out talent or skill. Their sound is meh as well. They were my fave band when I was 6, and by the time I was 7, I'd outgrown them. By the time I was 8 I was hooked by Rush. Bowie doesnt really do anything for me either tbh.
@@cymbalism1
My point was: there are good musicians WITH costumes👕👗👚 and makeup💄.
It's their visual 🎭artwork how they perform.
And what I liked when I was six (The Beatles) why should I call it now "terrible"? THE SWEET were a great Teenie band.
I still like their Rock albums. To sh*t on something what you used to like is not "growing up", it's detestable.
@@HappyMachorino-bd8no KISS are a circus show. Period. I'm glad I grew out of them at 7, and I also grew out of cartoons too!!!

Kiss WAS a good band & were very capable of designing catchy riffs, hooks & a great stage performance. Good for rock music at the time. In more recent years however, total trash & most of what you hear is someone else playing an instrument... Kiss is no more & never will be again.
