It's just sad that digital papers have taken over junk journaling, most crafters seem to use them now, and it's
hard on people who don't use them when you're trying to follow something, sorry if this sounds critical but I think it's something a lot of people might feel, I don't know, let me know what you think

    • @joiedefi

I totally understand your sentiments, and can I say thanks very much for raising this point. It's a valid one and you said it in a kind way, I appreciate that...I use a lot of non-digital supplies too, that's my way. I find it exciting to "solve" how to create something without a pre-created picture. Sometimes the papers are also just what I want, for an image or the colour. But I don't create digitals myself and so I'm not focused so much on using them. I also want my viewers to be able to "access" this hobby and all the joy of it. So I guess I use them occasionally. Each to their own, but as I say I hear you. Does this make sense ??😁💜

Joie de Fi - Yes, what you say absolutely makes sense and you put it so well.
I don’t use digitals. I work in an office and use a computer and printer all day, so it’s the very last thing I want to do when I get home. 😱🤷🏼‍♀️🤪
I like buying paper pads and using those. I don’t always get ‘exactly’ what I had in mind, but what I do get that is different I find inspiring, if you see what I mean? 😄
Thank you for all you share. 😊🙏💝💕💐
Also sending hugs to Eileen. ❤️💐

This is a great point, especially your point about time in front of a computer screen. I'd also say that I simply love the feel of book pages and using those and junk mail in projects...so if I can work those in I do. It's just a personal thing. Thanks so much for joining in with this debate, and for sending more hugs to Eileen!! 👍❤️🌿

Hi Joie. I've watched this video before but found it the perfect motivation to finish my paper-sorting project. I bought plastic envelopes from our $Tree store here in the US. I'm sorting mostly by book pages, dyed papers (one each for all colors & coffee/ tea dyed), pattern scraps and digital scraps. You always have such great ideas. I hope you're on your way back to us. We miss you! Hugs & Creative Blessings!

I've used magazine storage boxes for mags on bookcases, and am thinking of changing from current zipper pouches to the same type boxes. I have shelves next to my desk, this will allow me to get things off the floor and out of the way, and leave under my desk for the beads, charms, small things like ink pads, etc that are in sliding drawer tower. I think we all struggle with storage no matter how little or how much we have, and periodically going through and having a sort out just makes us feel better and less frustrated. Not what we necessarily enjoy it. But we find things we forget we had, get ideas, and get more inspired. We just have to finish before we stop midway because of an idea. lol. TFS!

I think if you don't have money to spend on digitals etc is a good thing...It makes you more creative! I bought a book of cloak room tickets for a £1 and I distress them to use in products (you can coffee/tea stain them). You could also start a glue book and glue any bits you collect adding doodles and colouring (making you own papers). Any mail that comes with a stamp/cancellation marks on it, glue it in your glue book. I also bought a modern invoice book which I also distress.

I bought myself a large plastic tub with wheels on it for easier manoeuvring. I placed the papers vertically inside and when I look for something, it’s so easy because all I have to do is flick through the papers without having to remove them from the box. This works well for me but everyone is different and you need to find something that suits you. Love your channel.

I always enjoy your videos and find them very helpful. You do such a great job with explaining everything. I totally agree that the organizing/storage is an ongoing issue. I have found that the hanging file folders work great for 8 1/2 X 11 paper. I, too, store those under my desk. But I also buy a lot of 12 X 12 pads and find those harder to store. (I'm not much of a digital person) A lot of my ephemera is stored in the drawer units sold in hardware stores. Thanks again for sharing.

@@joiedefi for 12X12 I use the same bids (crates) that hold the hanging folders. Without the folders the 12X12 pads fit in. But then I'm constantly pulling out a bunch of the pads and they end up in stacks. Hard as we try, I think with this hobby it's difficult to stay organized cause we need so many different supplies within an arms reach. (At least that's the excuse that I'm using! 😂)

The answer, for me, was a scan and cut and a bunch of small tins/pretty boxes collected from thrifting and friends. Amazing how much less space (in our crafting area and in our heads) kits etc take when they’re cut up, and I can store them by category. (Labels, flowers, birds, tags, journaling cards, etc.)
I’ve also decorated some small cd holder type binders with pretty collages so I can stand them up on top of a dresser I use for storage and they just look like art. I theme the collage (color and content) to indicate what goodies they each contain. Beats the pants off the piles, bins, and folders method I used to use. See also: Iris cases.
I’ve stopped buying ANY new stuff until I’ve got the stuff I already have cut out and stored. Full sheets from kits have gone by designer into files, but- I no longer print *anything* until I’m ready to actually use it. I’ve still got an overwhelming amount of “stuff” left over from my -PRINT ALL THE THINGS- stage, but I’m whittling away at it. Wishing us all luck in taming the paper beast! (Especially those of us who need to SEE our stash to get motivated.)

I would consider what types of things you typically look for when you're searching through your printables--what you call them in your mind: botanicals, vintage, small ephemera, tags, backgrounds, etc. Putting the papers in those clear folders sounds like a great idea so you can pull them up to your desk easily when you want to look for something.

Hi Joie, thanks so much for doing this video...you clearly thought through the process. Traditionally, I've sorted mine by designer & kept them in a legal sized 4 drawer filing cabinet. Not the best system. iIthink I'll adopt your genre idea because let's face it, when you want a label, a gelli print won't do; when you want a floral, a background paper won't do. It would also accommodate outliers like gel prints, masterboards in various stages of completion, backed papers, etc. Getting excited now! Hazel

I use a plastic heavy duty divided holder with lots of dividers. I separate by theme, such as botanical, birds, nature related, and then make a separate plastic holder by holidays, and by other themes I make journals out of on a regular basis. It helps me to keep themes together so every item I need to make a journal out of is together. Works now but who knows down the road!

You would be surprised just how much will neatly fit in an 1.5" or 2" three ring binder. Those thin translucent binder folios with pockets that go into the binders are a way to separate the piles into however you want to sort them out. You can use zippy bags, to stick in the folio to hold smaller stuff or use sheet protector sleeves for partially cut out pieces. You really don't want to go much thicker than the 2" because it gets too bulky and hard to handle. Now is a good time to get them when back-to-school stuff is usually on sale. Adding dividers between the folios helps with keeping sections organized.
That overwhelming pile of papers could easily and neatly be stored in 3 or 4 binders, and you can easily pull them out, easily find what you want, and easily tidy it up. IF you find one binder getting too full, you can either, say you have a tremendous amount of bird themed papers, just take them out go to another binder, all by themselves but go with one maybe a bit thinner, like 1". For example, you can have one binder for botanical/nature and have a section for butterflies, one for birds. one for wildflowers, etc. Then another binder, you can have for kits. One binder you could have for backgrounds, letters, collage papers, etc. You get the drift. Think of what you have and how you use them.
Storing them vertically on a shelf or bookcase, or even on a far corner of your desk area they take up very little real estate. It is very flexible, cheap and easy to use. Hope that helps!

    • @impalamama7302
      @impalamama7302 2 роки тому +1

@@brookematthews4431 There are many ways! Sheet protectors, those pocket folios students use have three rings or if not, get out your hole puncher. Or you can make them. I don't know where you are, but here in the US you can get all kinds of binder fodder at the Dollar Tree. But due to inflation it's now the Dollar and a quarter store. But last time I went there it was back before Easter.
I wish I could put up pictures!
I was known as the "Binder Queen" back in the days when I home educated my 4 (now grown) children. It even leaked over to the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Girl Scout Troops I was involved in with my three sons and one daughter.
Looking back we really just junk journaled our curriculum lol!
Hope that helps to clarify a wee bit!
      Cheers!

This is wonderful. I have a large number of used Manila folders that I did not want to just toss in the recycle bin. The folders are scored at the bottom so that they can be refolded to accommodate more papers. I refolded them at the most narrow score mark and then added accordion folded paper at the sides to ensure that nothing falls out. I have made envelopes from magazine pages to hold partial pages and small items. The paper at the sides keep them all contained, an contracts and expands as needed. Mine are divided by subject as well.

Hello Joie.... this is a great and useful video. I have a much bigger mess than you have. I am pretty good at figuring out how to sort & file my papers.... it is the damn maintaining that throws me for a loop. I tend to sort papers by how I plan to use them. One big category for me is papers printed to use as pages in journals. Then I have papers printed to create ephemera with. I also have patterned papers which are great for ripping up for collage.... then there are papers which need fussy cutting plus labels. Then there are gelli printed papers, embossed papers, paper napkins, and translucent papers, painted (with watercolor) papers, stamped papers....... and you can't forget dyed papers ie coffee. Marbled and florentine papers. I am sure I have missed a few. I LOVE PAPER!! ....Great Video!!!

Brilliant as always ❤️ I love my under the desk paper storage idea that I took away from your last organisation video, it works really well for most of my papers but I haven't categorised the digitals like you just did. Thinking that might be a good idea for me also.
My system has been to sort digital papers regularly so that I find gems that I had forgotten I had then my next projects tend to heavily favour those papers and that leads to new ideas. I also go through the files on my computer, which are sorted fairly well when looking for new inspiration. My digital files are massive because I lean heavily towards Public Domain images that really seem to get me inspired, kind of like your passion for books 😉 🥰

Unless I haven’t got very many of someone’s kits then I paper clip the kit and put them all in one folder. It makes it quite easy to pull out a few folders and put them on my desk. I love to categorize, I am a data analyst 😊 by profession. Over the years I learned to be OK with the possibility of change of my categories. I decide on a set of categories and just go with it. With time if I notice that one of the categories grows too fast, I divide it into a couple or more distinct ones. And those that never grew I simply combine with a name with a lot of hyphens in it. So I recommend to see no stress in all this, just start, then follow to the best of your abilities, then get used to, then observe your natural tendencies and adapt your system to them.

@Shoshi Platypus That brown packaging paper! I love it! Multi-use-at Christmas, big time, for shipping presents; it often covers my desk under the craft mat, the edges sticking out are a good place to wipe a brush on or test an ink dauber or do a quick calculation. You’d think they were a prized possession, the way I carefully fold them up into neat flats. Yesterday I finished painting a bureau for my daughter, whose due date for the first grandchild is next week. Because my brown packing papers were so neatly stored, it was easy to take them over and spread them out on her picnic table and in the grass. When finished painting, I once again folded them up neatly and brought them home. They are ready for another project!

I have a mess on my desk AND I use Zippy bags in hanging file folders in a file drawer and categorize into themes, designers, and specific categories, etc. - these is how I store my digitals and book and magazine pages - I use both and I often keep my book pages in the book. I find it easier to cut up a digital than an original book page. You have given me inspiration to reorganize and clean up!

I enjoyed your video today and got some great ideas.
When I put two different categories like Christmas and Thanksgiving in a clear folder or bag together I face one category to the front and face the other category to the back, then put a small label on both sides saying what is facing that side example Christmas
W / Thanksgiving on opposite side.
And on the back the label would say:
    Thanksgiving
    W/ Christmas on opposite side..
So it wouldn't matter which side the file was put back you would know what the second category is.
I hope I made sense in my explanation.

We all struggle with this issue of getting organized. Just when I think I have a good system I find another way that I think will work better. The one thing that I have been most conscious of is to have most of my digitals organized by creator, so that when I use then I can always give credit to these creators for their hard work. Currently I have a couple of 3 tier carts - I love them - On the top tier I have the plastic wallets that hold what i use most and the creators that are my favorites, each wallet is labeled by creator and that theme as well

    I have a few systems
I have plastic wallets with a closure for digital kits under the name of the maker
The kits are held seperate with a large paper clip
I have a Christmas wallet as well
Antique papers like dockets letters music etc are in 3 file boxes
I use a trolley from Ikea with wheels that has my ready to go ephemera standing up in little clear plastic fridge bins
I have a few small bins on my desk with things I use all the time like butterflies, birds, words all ready to use
Then I have a plastic bin with the ephemera to be cut out
For plain coloured backing papers I have in a 3stack tray filing system
On my desk are 2 plastic drawers A4 size that keeps extras like stamps
Cards, botanicals, christmas bits and pieces, extra birds, butterflies
Quite a few plastic see through Bins to put things in like laces, flower’s ,fabric, ribbons, book binding items
Im not sure Ive got it right yet
    Its hard all the same
Ive have tried many crafts this journalling is the hardest to keep tidy
But I tidy up every time after I finish daily

I think that the file folders hanging in a drawer or an appropriate box would have been convenient (like in the offices). I was also wondering if you couldn’t attach the little lights higher on the wall, so it would free some space on your desk. Also tabs could help you find the topics more easily. To finish, unless you are selling all these papers, in such a case, they should be separated from your personal stash, but if you are not selling those, I think that you have too many. The brain cannot handle so much and chiefly we wouldn’t have enough of a lifetime to use everything. At a point, we know what we love the most and use the most. Personally I am selling more and more of my stash because it became too much and I feel stuck in my creation. Very often, less is more. This is my humble opinion. But maybe do you need a lot to create a lot? We are all different…

I can relate. Until I discovered junk journalers on UA-cam and started off watching all your videos, I hadn't heard of digital paper kits. I've always made my own papers (and fabrics). As a career artist, Originality is an expectation of how I've worked, and primarily still do. However, I can't resist awesome materials. So I started exploring digitals on E (tsy)* which led to buying some, then using some, and buying more... justifying to myself those journals made with digitals I'll give away, and not sell as my own unique artwork. That opened a flood gate. Over the past few months, I've gone through several cases of paper from what I've printed.
I've organized them in file cabinets, as I do my own creations. I'm a bit more specific than you. I have to be considering that I've printed thousands of sheets so far. For instance I have a Botanical section, but within that it's further separated into flowers, trees, gardening... then full pages, double pages, tags, cards, labels, fussy cuts, etc. Bugs are separated as bees, butterflies, dragonflies, beetles, etc. You get the point.
When browsing and when I see a kit I think I might like, I tap Add To Cart. There it can stay until I have time to go back and browse through the files, to decide which I want. Unfortunately this method backfired on me recently...
The other day I got a notification that Carol Laws posted a new video. Immediately I saw it was a flip through and without watching it, rushed to E (tsy) to buy it before anyone else could. I put it in my cart and purchased it so quickly I failed to notice I had 109 kits in there too, which as a result, I also purchased. So organizing paper is now even more important than ever.
I should add that when I buy books to cut-up for journaling, something else you inspired me to do, I take them apart and file those pages as well. In the case where a book has beautiful images on both sides, I get two copies of it, at least.
Now when you post a decorated journal for sale, I'll make sure my cart isn't full when I rush to grab it.
Note, I did watch Carol's video to see what I purchased and I'm thrilled I got it. 👍😁
    * I have to type it as E (tsy) because if I spell it properly, UA-cam automatically deletes my comments. It's a way to not get people to leave this site. 👎

I got to many ideas from your video and from several of the comments. My takeaway is that I need to organize what I can and leave the rest to cut up/org later. I have a lot of stuff but some can definitely be put in categories. There are a lot of empty boxes in my garage that can hold papers in folders and inside the house. I have 2 arts/crafts rooms and have spread out to the kitchen right off my living room and computer/office room. The least I can do is clean and org and make things neater so I’m ready to collage or put a junk journal together. Thank you Joie and a the others who chimed in with their thoughts. It’s 9 months since this video was posted and I’m just now watching and learning and doing.

    I would probably go with what I'm most used to using for particular types of journals, Like, probably: 1. Collage pages, 2. Birds, Bee's and Butterflies,/Animals, 3. Flowers and Mushrooms/Gardening, 4. Food/Recipes/Kitchen, 5. Fussy Cutting/Ephemera, 6. Shabby Chic/Feminine/Pastels/LACE, 7. Letters/Lettering/Business/Commercial/Ads, etc., 8. Holidays, 9. Vintage/Simple, 10. Vintage/Complex, 11. Sewing/HOME, 12. Bright/Colorful, 13. Retro/Eclectic, & Unique/Unknown...
That's probably how I would list my types....Oh, and of course one for my favorite color, 14. EVERYTHING PINK!!! Oh, and a special category for: 15. Music..or, ART/ Drawing/Painting, CATS, RELIGIOUS (almost forgot, da..), ETC., whatever you're most into.

THIS IS How I ORGANIZE: i use 25 or more Folders all with 3 prongs and sheet protectors hold either kit parts, or i mix parts too, or like themes, by color and styles, some just lined paper, or tea stained papers, designers, or backgrounds...first by how I would look for them and use them, why put french style with modern patterns? second by colors and tones, and third by how useful they are, keeping the prime space filled with those items most used.

I definitely think it helps to analyze how you journal. By theme, era, designer, etc? Then sort accordingly. Things that need fussy cutting go in a bin next to the chair I sit in most evenings and I cut them out in my spare time and sort them into smaller bins, similar to yours, by theme. I sort scraps by color and vintage papers by era since I mostly do memory keeping.

    Joie,
Another way to approach this might be this...think about HOW YOU THINK as you are creating. Do you think about what you want to add based on color (green, blue, vintage, etc), item/element (label, focal image, text, etc), or feel (texture/mood)? When you are creating a collage, do you think, "I want a flower, some vintage text...." or do you say, "I want something from Tracey Fox or 49 Dragonflies"? Organizing based on HOW YOU THINK while creating, may help make the system more sustainable for you. It may be worth experimenting with to see how it works for you. Like you, I have a really hard time with putting things away when I'm done with a crafting session. But I find that by having things organized based on how I think while creating, helps me instinctively know where to go for what I want. Balancing the realities of "what seems to make sense" with how do I really think and create is a bit of a trick, but worth figuring out. Good luck, and thinks for sharing your challenge with us. Your transparency of this issue is really helpful.

Well, I don't use digitals because I have no way to print. Everything has to be harvested from books or scrapbook pages or items I've stamped. I fussy cut (or punch) images and place like items in clear storage boxes (including cleaned salad containers from takeaway). If the pages are large, such as dictionary/thesaurus I'm currently using gallon storage bags.
    Scrapbook cardstock and papers:
I have cubes with vertical dividers. In these I have plastic Cropper Hoppers holding 12X12 or 8-1/2X11 papers/cardstock. One is filled with Christmas/Authentique papers. Another is fall, another Halloween, another has metallics such as gold, silver or copper designs. Some commercially available papers may be stored by collections or by design or theme: sky/clouds or Bo Bunny or patriotic or sports.
I also buy plain cardstock in 3X5, 4X6 and 5X8 sizes either to punch shapes, die-cut or trim to sizes to fit on cards, allowing mass making projects to speed up. The place where I buy the majority of my plain cardstock will cut it for a small fee, so I have top folding or side folding stock ready to make cards. I have 2 binders filled with scraps, organized by color ROYGBIV and neutrals, so I grab and use them. I recently took top strips and mounted double sided tape to the backs of the strips for quick use practically anywhere. Also the collection titles were made into short strips to use as greetings or words.
I do think you should allow yourself the expense of circle punches or possibly infinity dies if you would like to use more circles.
Above all, organization is personal and reflects the individual. There's no right or wrong way, just your personal way.

I use digis, but I'm careful about buying, I use book pages and that's a bigger 'problem' for me -shelves and shelves, boxes, and surfaces of books. Then, I also use magazines for my glue books and challenges, so I have several clear plastic a4 boxes of cut out mag images. I put the digis by theme, like you have, in an accordion file, and that works well. Labels and wee ephemera go into a 4 page, 16 sided, folder I made with see thru strips. I have an inexpensive tall narrow IKEA stand of drawers, and a large pigeon hole type of standing unit , also IKEA, not expensive. And they're both full! Arghhh. My biggest problem is the mountains of scraps, of all sizes and types of paper... boxes large and small, baskets, piles everywhere, and my attempts to sort them have failed! 🤭 thanks for sharing your ideas, Joie! 🌺 Mx (uk)

When I started five or six years ago, I printed just about everything presented on the internet, didn’t have a style. Cute or sophisticated? Be like her, or her? Wondered if somehow I’d turn out to be a mass maker of cute and neat notepads and start selling at craft fairs, or if I would become someone who actually uses her JJ s daily for journal-writing. Neither of those things happened. I kept all those printed-out digitals in a two-drawer file cabinet. Years later and I still don’t have a style. I’ve noticed, though, that when I am inspired to make something, it’s because there’s something personal involved. A Christmas present for a sister made from a small box covered with images of a barn and trees similar to hers, for example. A junk journal for each of three great-nieces; a winter photo album, a French-themed one, and my huge tome, an ugly duckling one. A Camping Out West JJ for my daughter and son-in-law last year. Our son’s wedding a month ago prompted me to make a JJ memento for the pastor who officiated. It’s easy for me to see now that I never touch the random early digitals in the file cabinet, and that I return again and again to favorite papers, both background and to cut up for smalls. Most of which are in fact digitals. I love pretty wallpaper printables, esp from Amity Bloom. Botanicals. Vines in general. Long story short, I think my file cabinet can be dumped. Haven’t pulled from it in two years. I think that I use what I love, and I love color combined with pattern and proportion. Also realized that scrapbooking 12 x 12 paper packs are too big for my purposes, so no matter how beautiful they are, my collection exists to be cut up where possible. Maybe consider the smaller versions of those? I’d say solid color papers are my mainstay, yeah, pretty basic. As much as my eyes feast upon frilly pink and lace and embellished-to-the-nines projects, that’s not me, and they don’t come out well when I’ve tried. Once I made a very satisfactory JJ from a Vectorias Designs kit, so pretty, and I used little stuff I had to embellish, but mostly I’m straightforward and kind of linear in presentation. Oh, anyway, why am I writing this, lost my point. I’m impressed with Joie de fi’s collection of papers-clearly they are loved and are the favored ones. Only eight piles of papers to categorize! Omg, I’ve got a closet now storing papers I like! This shouldn’t be; I sense that I’m “doing it wrong,” even though it’s always said in junk journaling that there is no wrong. I keep, as veteran junk journalers have instructed, a majority of scraps-even when I know I won’t be making that project again. I think I should be more ruthless about pitching things when I’m finished, and starting fresh with the next project. Images can always be reprinted. The explosive growth of my papers comes also from printing multiple various sizes of an image. Cuz I create as I go, and don’t know in advance what size I want, where it will go, etc.I end up keeping all the various printouts so that I’m not wasteful. I don’t think this is in my best interest. Ruthless must be the way to go. I guess I’ve said my thing, hope my own confusion has contributed to the quality discussion here. The storage method you settled on is how I store decoupage napkins: in sleeves within a large loose leaf notebook, with examples in the notebook and boxes of the remaining pack elsewhere. It has worked for me and I think will be the most useful way to store papers-after I jettison the huge bulk of what I now know I will never use. Discrimination is the way to go! Keep what you love! Get rid of everything else! Thanks for this video; managing the papers is obviously a complex affair, and you touched on its many considerations.

Thank you for this perspective on onganizing papers. I have OCD which makes me super organized but also makes it difficult for other people to understand my system. 😁 I always print the entire kit which I store on a large plastic envelope or a gallon size zipper bag. These are stored alphabetically by creator. When I make a project from a kit I try to use all the pieces but if not, i have a separate filing system that is organized by type such a tags, journal cards, ephemera etc. For small things like labels, numbers, butterflies, I usually sit down in the evening to watch TV with my partner and fussy cut them. They are stored in magnetic tins that are stored in cookie sheets and hang on the wall. I know my system won't work for everyone but its helps keep me calm and if know where everything is.

I think a lot of crafters are constantly looking for better ways to organize their supplies
I had my digitals by artists -some I still do 🤔but I’ve had by holiday also -but I use clear plastic envelopes -I can get a lot on them
You’ve given me some ideas on reorganizing
I do have like vellum in one, etc I think it’s gonna be very individualized & each person has to think about how they find things best? By color, subject, artists
    TFS 👍great job!

Hello Joie, I separate butterflies and birds and one container and then I have pictures of ladies in another I have pockets in one if I have pockets and have birds or butterflies on them they go into the pocket container. I have papers that tea and coffee died but they are and then I have printed too many digital it’s not the whole digital kit but too many digitals. I like the magazine holders because you can just pick it up and take it to your desk and take any of them to your desk take the papers out that you want to use when you’re done you can stick them back in the ones you don’t use or you can put picture scraps into your scrap magazine holder. Like me I have a lot of those holders so maybe you could store yours on the floor in that other room or maybe your husband could put you up a really long shelf that would be awesome

You are so fortunate because I have so much more physical stuff than you! Yikes! I left jj for learning watercolor painting for a couple of years and now I am getting back into the jj, hoping to combine both! So I am actually doing the same thing! (I don’t sell). In organizing my papers I pull colors first, but then as you say there’s so many other possible categories that it does become overwhelming. I am so slow that I probably don’t make as many finished journals as you. I have so many more categories, like people, animals, I like putting small ephemera together like you said but even then I do it by color. Because of color, I like for my storage to be clear and see through so that I know what is in there!! Oh well, maybe just stop buying until I use up! I should probably make a big sign that says that!! I also find it difficult to organize the digital files on the computer…how to remember what’s in the older files?? Help! Thank you for trying!!💕

I use hanging folders. My categories are "stuff to cut up" like labels, tags etc., backgrounds, botanicals, collages, animals with a subcathegorie insects and large bookpages. But I have boxes and bags with scraps that are overwhelming. Once the printed sheets (other than labels and tags) are cut up, they begin to cause a problem :-)

Isn't the idea of digitals to store files on your computer and print them when you need them?
I wonder if you have a messy computer filing system too?
I'm just taking you a step back from where you've started. I'm the same which is how I know lolx
I would do yourself a favour and put all your papers either
1- in the post as gifts
    2- in the recycling box
Once you have decided if you'll ever really likely to use them.
I did this and it was a giant relief!!!

I decided to use binders for my digitals & I place them in clear page protectors. I have two huge binders 1) Sorted by colours, rose theme, collage sheets, ladies, children, black & white, and background papers 2) Ephemera choices. I store the binders behind my desk, in easy reach of my craft table to pull out, flip thru & put back. I tried putting them (like you) in an open bucket in sleeves but found the pages got warped in the box. I tried the file folders but didn’t like that I couldn’t see (at a glance) & gave up on that system altogether. I appreciate you sharing your ideas with us!

Hi thanks for video. I LOVE BASEBALL CARD protector sheets bought at dollar store. For storing small items labels and cut out punches . I use recycled binders (thrift store) daughter school) and bought at dollar store transparent sheet protectors used for some digitals whole or partially cut or small onion skin prints . I also repurposed old photo albums with the pocket sheets. Very small photo albums are great for small cut outs as well. Take care

I mostly buy small ephemera images which I print out, but any of the background ones I resist printing out until I use them. My system of organizing my minis is kind of funny. In the US mushrooms come in these little black plastic tubs and we eat a lot of mushrooms. They stack so nicely and I can spread them out on my desk when creating so I have my mini images in them labeled flowers, words etc. I stack them in 12's and keep them on a cart.

When I was very new to junk journaling I printed all my digitals. Since I think in topics I categorize by individual plants, collaged botanical pages, individual animals, collaged backgrounds including animals, Individual birds, collaged pages including birds. I’ll use the same method for insects including butterflies, then labels large, medium and small. I also want to keep full pages and cut up portions separate from each other. Now that I’ve been doing this a while I no longer print digital pages. I file by topic digitally and don’t print until I need them. Honestly I have seriously thought about throwing out or donating all the many pages of printed digitals because they take up room I don’t have and they distract me from creating. I can’t get past the guilty feeling about wasting paper. I also spent a small fortune on colored toner cartridges. So far I can’t justify getting rid of them.

I am the queen of fussy cutting, keeps me busy while watcvhing TV. Those are seperated by category & size. I don't do the printables, my printer doesn't make nice ones and I really like the texture of other papers. That said I have TONS of paper, thanks to local thrift stores. I bought shelving from scrapbook stores as they all went out of business. I sort the whole pages by color. Seperate files for exotic papers, lined papers. I moved a year ago and the studio is still not ready for prime time and I've spread to the dining room table. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and am down to sorting scraps by size (tiny as postage stamps, size to put on small envelopes/pockets, long skinny pieces for trim or tags, full-page ephemera)

I do not have digital images but do have loads of scrapbook paper pads with images as well as solid papers in various colors... and I too keep mine in clear pockets or large 12x12 zip lock baggies...BUT... as an added organizational method I find very helpful is I do make heavy dividers with the tabs on the top so I can actually find the various categories .and I don't have to remember what pocket holds what by color, etc.. I can see the taps and can add another pocket if need be to add to that grouping... That way I do not have to look thru an entire tub or in my case a cardboard file box.. I have done that with my stamps and have found it very convenient to find what I need quickly. . Love the idea of the plastic tub with wheels..

I don’t have much digital papers but the ones that I do I use a file folder and of course categorize them for examples nature animals” would be wild animals, birds, butterflies etc. And even if I had tag butterflies I would put them with the butterfly category. So when I decide to make something with butterflies they are all together with butterfly images. I hope that makes sense. I have a file cabinet. If I didn’t have a file cabinet I would put it in a plastic box on the floor, under or next to my desk. But I’m definitely addicted to scrapbook paper. I have so much scrapbook paper that I can wall paper my most of the house.lol. When I’ve moved to other places my family hate helping me move and complain that I have to much craft supplies. Lol 😂

I read all the fabulous comments too. I don't keep a lot of paper. But I do store what I have in sturdy plastic envelopes. The envelopes will almost stand on their own. They also fit nicely in file boxes to see what I have. I also store stencils in them with dividers. Elizabeth St. Hillaire is a wonderful artist here on UA-cam. She has the best hook and line system for storing her stencils. I hijacked her idea and use the hooks to hang fabrics, stamps, brayers and anything I can mange. I go vertical whenever I can.

Designing a system is always daunting and it will change over time as your craft grows and changes. I am a scrapbooker so have lots of papers and other stuff but have my journal stuff stored differently at this stage as I use mainly found items in magazines, books, op shops, and top it off with scrapbook supplies when appropriate. I don't do digital, couldn't afford the downloads and especially the printing. My journal papers and laces are in boxes under my desk with some on my desk as I have little room. I'm thinking as I proceed I will need to upgrade that storage system to accommodate more of a collection. I follow journal makers on UA-cam but use the ideas no the papers.

You must be brilliant at shopping for ink/toner! The expense of that little necessity keeps me from printing out much more than I need at any one time. Instead, I organize the files on my computer (and backup drive), with key words in the file names so a simple search brings up likely contenders for printing.
