Do you know what is considered real Chinese food? It certainly is not your lo mein, pork fried rice, and sesame chicken. We live in China, and are lucky enough to eat real Chinese food everyday. But the real excitement comes when you go to the countryside in different Chinese provinces. That's when you see the real culinary diversity show it's head.
Is it dirty? Yeah, a lot of the time...
Is it delicious? Yes! Most of the time.
    Does it get boring? No.
China is known for it's food, so come with us as we go dig up some local grub in a random village in the Chinese countryside and compare it to food that we get in the cities in China.

Excellent show! I've watched this video several times since you posted it and am simply amazed just how incredible this Hakka style farm-to-table restaurant was you both enjoyed and shared with us. The tour of their operation was just so wonderful, and particularly their frankness and sincerity to even strangers, which I find are the most enjoyable aspects of rural folk throughout East Asia. Thank you so much for sharing this experience with us of that lovely family. Back when I was in college in the 90s, many Chinese families in the U.S. would rent or sharecrop farmland so they could grow their own vegetables and sell the excess in Chinese restaurants and farmer's markets on the weekends for income while Chinese government-sponsored students with all their tuition and rent already paid.

My first experience of "real" Chinese food was in Chengdu and then in the middle of nowhere, Liangshan. But the food was amazing. I miss true Sichuan and Yunnan food so much. All the places we ate were really clean, and even the restaurants that were rundown and old, and they were pretty much picked at random based on where we were and hungry.
Also, tofu and eggplant are so well prepared in China, they're absolutely shit in the USA in my opinion.

Not true. I'm Australian with bad mandarin. All the Chinese i have met have been so incredible. When i give them shit directions i've had taxi drivers call into base or call a cousin who speaks a little English just to try and help me out. Without some people in china i would not still be here. some come up to me in line to translate when they see i can't understand.. we immediately become friends on wechat and talk often. within 6 weeks of my arrival i had 40 unknown friends from random meetings.

    • @scottthomson7201

+Bird718 I have an idea who they are. i meet them in life and then they add me to wechat. I've added taxi drivers, randoms on the street, friends of friends. Many people are absolutely excited to add me and chat with me. Don't get butthurt because you were wrong. Have you ever lived here?

I know I'm late to this video, but I think it's really cool how you guys balance the topics about china in your videos. You tell the negatives or the realistic viewpoints about the country's culture and its people, but then you also show the awesome positives about the country, like the people you were interacting with in this episode. It was pleasant to see you guys talk chinese to the locals, and how welcoming they all were.

Great video, would love to see more family style restaurant videos from different parts of China. I live in Taiwan and travel (and eat) extensively, so many items you guys eat are familiar but still different. They commonly prepare bitter gourd with salted (duck) egg here, and I grow to like it over time (just like stinky tofu). Sanitary conditions are much better here, though, I eat street food all the times and while I normally get sick easily, I never had a problem here.

Guys, I love your channels and I honestly think videos like this is the best content of yours hands down; I wish you made more! I feel like this particular video has just the perfect amount of everything: scenery shots, you talking to each other and the camera and explaining things, food, and of course interactions with locals (which is imo the most interesting thing). Love it! I personally would love to see more videos/talks/interviews involving local Chinese people.

Totally awesome little restaurant there - it's really neat how they are going to the trouble to raise their own produce and poultry, coupled with the general cleanliness of the place.
These people really care about their chosen line of business. Also, since they can raise a lot of their ingredients, they can save money - a nice synergy when you can find it.
Funny thing is, I seldom had any digestion issues in China when eating at mid-range to relatively cheap places... a huge factor in this is the quality and amount of the cooking oils being used... that can be a problem anywhere in the world.
