      1:08:23 Richard: "It's gotta be literally 20 basics... Because you're copying [Price of Progress], almost no amount would get me out unless I'm playing only basics." Meanwhile, Phil with only one land less than Richard took only 12 damages from PoP x 2 because he wisely chose to fetch some basics when he had the option, use non-land ramp like treasures, and had more basics in general in his deck (6 vs. 2) for his land drops. But literally no way to play around PoP... I like Richard's wild takes, but he got this coming for a long time by greedily meta-gaming his playgroup knowing everybody else focuses on board states rather than resources (mana and cards in hand).

      Or, alternatively, Tomer coulda built a Spellslinger deck that doesn't focus on "storming off" (defined here as casting/ copying multiple instants and sorceries in succession during a single turn in order to accrue resources and value that buries your opponents). For example, an otter deck focused on combat tricks to take advantage of their many prowess triggers. Or an X-spells deck, focusing on casting a few really big instants and sorceries each turn rather then a lot of cheap ones/copies. Building sub-optimally like that would be more in line with the others, as they had a token commander with almost no ways to make tokens (beylan), a racoon deck focused on just casting raccoons rather then their synergy with animating artifacts and enchantments (honestly, the precon commander might be a good stax commander), and a mouse deck with a commander that would much rather be a voltron commander with lots of equipment matters stuff.

      For me, the feel goods of seeing Tomer punish the pod for their greedy manabases is kinda offset by just how unbalanced the pod overall was. Even with their greedy mana bases, Seth, Richard, and Phil were all essentially playing draft-chaff. deck, while tomer brought an actual tuned spellslinger/storm deck (I argue storm because it was focused on repeatedly casting/ copying a bunch of spells to drown his opponents in value, which is exactly what storm does, there are other spellslinger archetypes that don't do this). Since the other 3 were bringing janky decks, woulda been nice to see Tomer follow along in the spirit and play a more janky deck, like frogs or bats.

    • @zachadsit5095

      @darkflame9410 2 місяці тому

      @@zachadsit5095 hence why I said spellslinger/storm. “Spellslinger” is just slang for “instants and sorceries matter”. The otters encourage a storm-style spellslinger deck (where you try to win by casting/copying many spells a turn to bury your opponents). But there are also spellslinger decks that focus on just casting 1-2 big spells (like the spellslinger precon from Strixhaven) or even combat tricks like Zada.
      My complaint isn’t that the otters weren’t on theme though, it’s that they were much stronger than the rest of the pod’s decks. If it had been a pod of Otters vs Birds vs Squirrels vs Rats, then I think it would’ve been more balanced. But the other guys were playing mice, rabbits, and raccoons. Meaning they were essentially playing draft chaff and all of them pointed out their decks had next to no synergies because there wasn’t enough support to do so. My complaint was maybe it would’ve been better (from a balance perspective) for tomer to have played a “weaker” kindred, like frogs or bats.

      @@darkflame9410 Just look at the decklists. Everyone was playing powerful cards alongside the janky support from Bloomburrow. Seth played a trouble in pairs along with common mice like tomer played jeska's will with common otters. Hell, Phil had a Jeska's will in the decklist. Richard running his classic suite of Teferi's protection and farewell. seth had the one ring in his list. How is it Tomer the only one who isn't playing fair? I think its just cuz his commander is a little more powerful than the rest in a vacuum.

    Calling that storm is an insult to storm. I’ve noticed a trend where “casual”commander is becoming bland green based midrange fest with slightly different flavors.
    When Richard played a Izzet deck a few weeks back it felt underwhelming and underpowered. Even though he won a game it was bc everyone ignored him bc he wasn’t doing much. But a similar thing happens to every deck that doesn’t play green.
    It was so nice to see a non green deck actually win and be viable. That’s do to it doing what its supposed to do and not apologizing for it.
    Yes Richard you did loose to a combo deck that untaps and can potentially win. With actual otters btw lutri coming in last second for the clutch was so amazing. But you also didn’t run any interaction to deal with it. If you built your deck to only play with and handle opposing creature decks then that’s on you for running into a combo deck.
    If you’re gonna salt out about “combo” decks then you will homogenize the format into a green based midrange fest as it’s slowly becoming.

    I love Richard, but tutoring basics instead of non-basics definitely would have made a difference. He was just being stubborn. Until the crew starts tuning down their mana bases a little bit, they deserve to be Price of Progress'd or Ruination'd or Bloodmoon'd every game.
    I'm getting to the point where I long for a season where a player using a card locks themselves out of using it for the rest of the season (except basics and various mana fixing lands). Even their jank-themed decks feel more optimized than most actual commander decks I see in the wild.

    • @markmittelbach7975

      But you don't understand, he'd have to run all basics to not be killed... when Richard was the only one to die to the double PoP and could have survived by having 2 basics out of his 8 lands that showed that clearly the only way to survive is by running a deck with over half the lands be basics, 2/8 is greater than one half that's just math. And it's not like he could have used his fetchlands to get a basic land instead of a nonbasic after seeing that his opponent was running PoP.
