I had the opportunity to meet both Craven and Benny Parsons in Martinsville in the mid 1990s. Both were very gracious and conversational with fans. Great racers and fan-friendly.
Ricky was on an upward trajectory, I was there that day bragging to my friends about how fast he had been all year and in a blink of an eye he was flying around getting hammered. I have seen the effects of tbi, I have been recovering myself from TBI and it changes you ! You lose a step ! Much love and respect for Ricky , he’s always seemed to be a good guy full of racing knowledge.
I was there in the backstretch bleachers coming out of turn two. Had a straight view to this pileup. I sat in the same area of seats in 1973 watching the 19 car wreck, and in 1975 when Tiny Lund was killed. I was 14 years old, my two friends and I went down to the fence and watched the safety crews get him out of the car. Terrible sight to see then.😢
I'm very amazed he didn't miss a race in 1996 after that... let alone return the following race at *Sonoma! _(To be fair, at Sonoma he did the "race 1 lap, then pull in for a relief driver" thing that was common practice back in the day)_
On the UA-cam broadcast of this race you can hear the late great Bob Jenkins say "Oh Shit" as this wreck began. It's the raw satellite feed of the race.

Thanks For Uploading Rick And Steve

Ricky has barely aged in the last 20 years
I was never a big fan of his but absolutely respect all that he’s accomplished. Nothing negative about him at all, just wasn’t a favorite of mine.
Came back to finish 3rd in the 1997 Daytona 500
