Sylvia was more than minor in “mid 20th century”. She was an accomplished musician and singer who had a top ten single that is considered one of the classic records of 1956/57 “Love is Strange”. Pretty impressive for being black and female in the middle of the modern civil rights movement.
Here is the truth: Each of these men were college bound and had no issues saying it in interviews from 1980-1985. That Hiatus was them getting their education as that was their goal in the first place. A follow up was only to remind fans who they were for future gigs on their spare time. Mr Robinson in between had to come up with something and that is what he chose. I remember when they were on Soyul Train and Don asked them they all said they were about to leave for school and Big Bank Hank obtained a Degree in Marine Biology where he practiced for 38 years. Each of these men got their education and only planned to do this for spare income. It is best to tell the whole story so we know this was not because they were chasing fame
The music industry is a rough life especially if you're under a rip off family like the Robinsons. They were the absolute worst! But the Sugarhill Gang persevered through it all. In recent years they've been on Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon. They've done a documentary shown at the major film festivals across North America. They've done major tours throughout the United States. They've performed across Europe and Asia. Big things will continue in 2021. Today rap music sucks imo. Most of these rap groups today come and go. I think it's amazing how the Sugarhill Gang is still doing their thing after 41 years in the business and all they've been through.
So 8th Wonder and Apache wasn't hits? There's showdown with the Furious 5 Rapper's Reprise with Sequence. This pisses me off because the narrator has no idea what he's talking about. He's just reading what someone wrote. These songs may not have been big on the pop charts or in the suburbs, but they got major play in my hood.
To the black, to the white, the red And the brown, the purple and yellow But first I gotta bang bang the boogie to the boogie Say up jump the boogie to the bang bang boogie

I still remember watching the trio perform "Apache" on the television talk show "Livewire" around 1982 on Nickelodeon. I thought I was watching Mr. T, Todd Bridges, and of course Wonder Mike perform "Apache" on the show.
Say what you will but 'Rappers Delight' introduced a whole new genre of dance music to the music seen. Furthermore, in my opinion, it is still one of the classics and best raps ever recorded before 'gangster rap' hijacked the genre. I'm just sorry they were ripped off by the Robinson Family...there was enough money for everyone.
There was no gangsta rap during that time. The rise of Run-DMC, along with the rise of Def Jam, singlehandedly ushered in a new era in hip-hop. Sugarhill was technically over by 1985.
Hold on...the Bassline is a sample from Chic's "Good Times". Are you saying that it was NOT a sample and some $70 cat laid the bassline? What? Please explain.
They may not have hit the top of the charts back in the day - but that song has lived on forever. played worldwide... I've heard it in various dancing clubs in at least a dozen countries in a few continents A DJ in Madrid Spain would play it when my friend & I arrive because of the line - "guess what America we love you!" We always get dragged out onto the dance floor! It was good fun music that has crossed a lot of cultures isn't that interesting, a female put rap out there on the charts? - but good ole crusty Nile Rodgers comes in with that big ego to take credit... He went on to do the same thing to Michael Jackson three notes on a bass guitar. Makes him a co-writer??? Cuz he could never have put together nor accomplished something this spontaneous in his Studios with his greedy micromanaging tactics along with his ego. He ripped off MJ. Niles was probably in cahoots with Sony records Cuz MJ' s death made Rodgers and Sony a boatload of cash.... Stealing his work. Can't do that when an art is paints a masterpiece? Stealing a writer's idea is plagiarism... It's okay to rip off others, but Rodgers owns those 3 notes? what you do with those same three notes on a bass guitar, is not equal in all songs...
Sugar hill gang were phony rappers(didn’t write rhymes or rapped), one of them even raps Grandmaster Caz’s lyrics almost word for word on the song. Hip hop was underground at the time and these MFs saw an opportunity

Hearing that sugarhill gang was made by black woman I was impressed shes amazing at business
Nothing but love and soul. Its a shame they went through hard times and getting ripped off. Rap hip hop owes them a lot.
I’m not a rapper, but I definitely can ride on Rappers Delight! I’m 52 years old and still get that vibe from time to time...

Why doesn't Parliament's "Chocolate City" qualify as the 1st rap song in 1975? Or Funkadelic's "Let's Take It To The Stage" the same year?
Found an even older song that should qualify: James Brown's "King Heroin", 1972 which had a sequel/part 2 called "Public Enemy #1"
Mostly true. But Hank took the lyrics from Grandmaster Caz. Hank was originally a door man at a Manhattan club a and manager for Caz.
Correction - Hank told Caz he was going to record a rap record and needed some lyrics. Caz gave Hank his rhyme book and told him to take what you need
Rappers delight Love them!

Hank didn't write but Wonder Mike and Master Gee wrote all their own raps so stop spewing BS if you don't know what you're talking about.
Wonder Mike and Master Gee were the writers of the group. Hank never wrote a bar in his life. You're rewriting history.
LIES. Mike and Guy were both writers and rappers. Hank did neither.
Not totally true. They did rap, and Hank took Caz' lyrics but did them well. Don't spread partial truths.
