Never throw away old glasses. The screws in them may come in handy for repairing your new glasses.
Sadly there are about 3000 different types of screws for glasses...
Doctor Eye Health I’ve been buying screwless eyeglass frames for years, it’s such a better mechanism than the old hinge design, not only no screw to loose but cheaper to manufacturer because of fewer parts and easier assembly. I’m surprised that all eyeglasses frames aren’t screwless nowadays.
@Green Giant Honestly there are much better ways that you could be contributing instead of donating glasses, they'd only use recycle the old frame anyway and can't use the lens. There are really better options if you want to donate.
Most $1 stores sell eyeglass repair kits cheap. they come with 2 screwdrivers and screws for $1 USD. i have a kit in the car and in the toolbox and at home. the are in expensive.

Hello, Doc! My eyes seem to "adjust" every year and so I have new glasses made every year. My optometrist said that since my sight has not stabilized, I cannot get laser surgery yet. Felt bad about this because I felt that my glasses are such a hassle to have.
But thanks to your videos, especially the one about cleaning lenses, maintaining my glasses has become more bearable. It doesn't feel like a chore anymore. Thank you so much.
I've found that 'over-the-ear' headphones hurt when wearing glasses, but 'on-ear' ones are👍🏼.

Doctor Eye Health no, over the ear ones have a bigger circumference and press in your glasses. On the ear ones don’t touch your head- just the ear, so they’re not directly pressing glasses. I’m not sure about earbuds🤔. ❤️❤️peace

cierra williams doesn’t make a difference weather they are wireless or not. Look up both ‘on the ear’ and ‘over the ear’ headphones. The difference is the ‘over the ear’ ones will press into your glasses. Where the ‘on the ear’ ones don’t touch your glasses. ❤️
In ear= preatty much every headphone that come with a phone, also called ear buds, example: apple air pods.
on ear= the soft part on the headphone relax on ur ear not around ur ear, example: JBL by Harman JR300
over ear= are the ones that the soft part of the headphones relax around ur ear, ex: Logitech G633 (the ones i have)
about confort, the in ear are the best if u have glasses, on ear suck it just hurts ur ear after a while, over the ear depends on the headphone soft part, beacause some headphones like mine, "leak" sound if i wear my glasses but is nothing impossible to fix since u can buy aftermarket stuff for them, aka just the soft part made out of leather, but the leak isnt anything big u dont even really notice it.
My first requirement when buying glasses: silicone nose pads. That's the best thing I've found for keeping glasses from sliding down my nose. (Doctor, love your presentations: little or no music, and if music low volume, and you get to the point quickly. You speak quickly, but unlike with other people, it doesn't make me feel anxious.)
noooo not silicone. i love titanium nose pads they never wear out and are great for people with allergies. unfortunately my new glasses take the snap in kind not the ones that screw in and i cant find them anywhere.
In photography we used to use the term reducing the "circles of confusion" when limiting the amount of light entering the lense to make the image sharper.
100% correct. We use the a similar term for when we correct for astigmatism by a spherical equivalent.

Loved the pinhole thing with the fingers! I tried it while watching this video and it totally works.
Tabletop test isn't really a solution. Nobody has a perfectly symmetrical head, and it is normal for one ear to be a few millimeters higher than the other
100% true. But for someone that doesn't know where to start, it can help. I will have a more comprehensive glasses adjusting video in the near future.
@@DoctorEyeHealth Dumkoff, if you don't know where to start by flattening them to a table you are just as likely (or moreso) to be bending them in the WRONG direction.
My classmate was unintentionally blunt with someone in the optical once: "Do you want the glasses to fit the table or fit your face?"

This video has helped me with a pair of my plastic glasses where the one side was killing me behind my ear. Since I hadn't yet seen this video, I kept bending and still no relief. I followed the Doc's heating method and it worked.
Nothing in this world works the same for everyone. It is great to have people who share info, and if it helps you, it helps you. As long as it doesn't hurt you, be thankful.

haha You could consider putitng some glow in the dark paint on the inside of the frame or on the glasses case. That might help in dim light.

As an optician, I recommend all of the tips. Along with taking your glasses off when spraying hairspray and perfume, and placing them out of harm's way. The chemicals damage the protective coatings on the lenses. ❤️I love my job.

A little while back I bought an upright glasses case and use it when I go to bed. The outer surface is a faux leather and the inside is soft/fluffy. It stands up and I put my glasses in it for overnight. That way the glasses are protected from being moved around on my nightstand, falling, getting scratched, etc. I bought this item online and with S&H was about $15. Kind of a high price, but I'm glad to have it.
My favorite tip was the c-pillow. I have a tip of my own that is similar to the pinch hole tip you shared. I use my entire hand like almost closing into a fist. You're absolutely a pleasure to watch and the information you share is so valuable. Thank you!

Glasses don't just correct eyesight and have style. One of their most important functions is eye protection. Wearing glasses is much safer than using contact lenses.
a trick that I once used to keep my glasses from falling apart when the screw falls out, is sticking a safety pin through the space where the screw originally was. it does look a little funny, but its a good temporary solution (especially when you're at school, and may not have a toothpick, or nail polish)

I used to use the camera trick quite a bit *before* I finally got glasses. But it's still a good hack when you forget your reading glasses. The "pinhole" trick is pretty cool - I didn't know about that one!
Awesome hacks! Nice quality video! One quick addition: The table rock test may not the best way to see if frames are properly adjusted because people tend to have one ear higher then another and then the glasses would sit straight on table but crooked on face.

As a licensed optician, i say you are correct. HOWEVER, the glasses should sit level when upside down on a flat surface.

I've been an optician for almost 10 years and I would suggest flipping the glasses over for the tabletop test.
If you've had your glasses adjusted by a professional you are going to mess up your glasses if you adjust them as shown in the video.
Most people have one ear that is higher or lower, or more forward or more back -- properly adjusted frames will account for that, and the temple-ends will never sit evenly on the table.
100% true, but at least this will help people get them into a neutral position. A future video yet to be released will be much more comprehensive.

That is due to consistent pressure on the sides of your temple tips. Please take them to an Optical have them loosen so they don't leave those marks!

Good tip about the heat. I've often thought about that as I leave my glasses on the dash to go in for dental appts.
Yeah the heat can ruin lenses pretty easily.
In heating their frame should be mindful not to overheat. I've had customers bring their's in melted & beyond repair. :-(

Tip: Use both hands to fit/remove your spectacles. Give your microfibre cloth a wash from time to time.
Visit your optometrist every few months for a spectacle service; screws tightened, ultrasonic wash & re-alignment. Most good optometrists will do this with a smile!

Thanks!! Great tips! The pillow was my favorite - why didn't EYE think of that?! Also, I only use dawn dish detergent to cleand my glasses with my CLEAN fingers - then I just blot the water off after rinsing with a paper towel - no rubbing to dry them and they are crystal clear. Any other solution or dry tubbing tends to ruin any coatings.

I bought rubber connectors that are supposed to be used to keep your glasses in place when you’re playing sports. They connect from one end to the other, like those necklaces people wear so they can keep their glasses around their necks when not using them.

Since having cataract surgery 4.5 years ago I only need prescription reading glasses, as I do a lot of desktop computer work, I have a set of extended-range multi-focal lenses with a close-up book reading zone yet extending the focal range to arms length away. Past this distance my internal replacement lenses are fine, I even have 20:20 vision in one eye.

My favorites were tips 4 and 5. Knowing that there's an ACTUAL solution to my mundane problem lessens my hatred for having poor visual capabilities. This video helped me a lot and I've just started watching your videos for half an hour or less. It gave me much respect for you and your job.
Here's a random question: How do you deal with having cockeyed while using your phone. Sometimes I forget that I'm not looking directly at the screen with both of my eyes. It's a manner of habit and self discipline which is hard to get a grip on how to change it.
Also.
Habitually, I get bored of watching and I often rest my hand on top of my eye, as a result of it, therefore in the process only using one eye. Would this damage the visual balance quality of my eye. Since when I close one eye and the another individually, I've noticed one is blurrier than the other. I know that eyes aren't 100% the same in regards to quality but having no knowledge about the subject makes me unsecure and unsure about the things that I need to change and improve about one's self.

you missed what i think is the best tip ,
use two hands to fit or remove your glasses , saves a lot of bending to the frame , and wear to always the same side , if you want to use one hand , remove using a pinch grip on the bridge ,
in number 2 you lay your glasses down the wrong way , lay them with the side ends facing up and the top edges of the sides down , that way the frame and sides are not effected by the ear return section , in case they are not bent exactly even and it gives a false impression.

never ever use super glue , sticky tape or even blue tac , but never super glue , , if the threads in hinges are stripped , they can have over size screws fitted , or even small nuts and bolts will work , i do it all the time , im a working optical lab tech.

I'm late to this party, and while I've had co-workers lay them upside down as you suggest, for number 2, I generally do it the way the doc shows. It just works better for me. The only time I do it the other way is if the patient has a big difference in the way the temples have to be bent, then, as you say, it throws things off. Generally speaking though, the temples are even, and it's pretty easy to tell if they aren't

For cleaning my glasses, I've been using baby wipes and running water. I clean the lenses with the baby wipes then use the water to rinse away the residue. I'm honestly not sure how safe this method is long term but it definitely gets my glasses SPOTLESS.

@@marlisaaugustin1917 I'd assume unscented is better but I'm not really sure. Not all wipes are created equally though. I find that thinner wipes work better and leave no lint. "Pampers" is the brand I use. Huggies sucks lol.

SUGGESTIONS:
1) Moldable Thermoplastic Beads. I first used the beads when the crown on my root canal broke. Within minutes, in less time than it takes to brew a tea bag. The beads melt together and I used them to make new temporary crown.
Then my glasses broke at the bridge. I tried tape and even aluminum foil didn't work. So I tried thermoplastic beads and they totally worked.A little bit goes a long ways. In less than 10 I was able to reconnect the two pieces with precision accuracy.
Because the plastic is clear when melted I was able to see the two halves connected at their grooves. The plastic is very malleable when it melts so you can adjust things as beads solidify. Once they solidify the because hard plastic.
Even with arms on frames. No nail polish or crazy glue. Instead, use thermoplastic beads. Melt and then roll into size of a pea. Then press the pea around the part where tiny screw is missing.
Wrap soft plastic around it then use a tooth pick a tool for stuffing soft plastic into small screw hole. I keep filling the screw hole with soft plastic. Then I remove the excess while plastic is still soft. Once it hardens the glasses are fully functional. The BEST thing about thermoplastic beads is that they're reusable. Do the same as glue or polish but without permanently attaching the frames or without the risk of glue sticking to skin.
2) Another idea I recommend can do very similar to thermoplastic beads is hot glue gun and even the white glue that wash off with soap and water. Will take longer to solidify but works.
3) If arm or stem break. Instead of putting dental floss through tiny hole. Cut 5" strand of dental floss/dental tape or any kind of string or thread. Hold pieces together and wrap string around both parts. Leave enough to tie off. Should hold both ends together. Can coat with drop of crazy glue. Let glue soak into thread and let dry. Now glasses are functional until repaired. Cool thing is that even using glue you can spare frames from further damage because all the glue gets absorbed by thread. So cut thread off when ready to repair.
4) Dental Wax for braces. Usually comes in small contain in strips. Sometimes smell like mint. This wax is very durable and fairly strong enough to hold temporarily.
5) Last product I recommend is laser bonding glue. It's not as strong but still a solution.
The nerdwax is definitely an item I want to try. I've adjusted my glasses very tight before so they didn't slide at all, but it hurt my ears and I had them readjusted again.

Tip #8 1:16 Don't hold your glasses like that when you're wiping a lens. Always my glasses, flex frames especially, after a year, would snap at the bridge. But why?
I figured out that the greatest repeated stress on the bridge was from holding the glasses on one side while wiping off the lens on the other side. This flexes the bridge - even if only just a little bit- eventually causing it break (look up: case hardening, this makes any material more brittle).
While it is a bit awkward to hold the frame of the lens you are cleaning, it's easy to get used to. I haven't had a frame break in over ten years. (Of course I may be wiping my glasses with more force than other people; but think of me as the crash test dummy. Eventually I always had a problem, but now you can avoid even the possibility.)
I remember in middle school one of the screws in my glasses broke so I tied it off with some red yarn. I used to crochet a lot..

Slide them slightly down your nose. This stops the humid air coming out of the top of your mask from hitting the lenses directly.
Put shaving cream on them!
He's cute! Love his hair. Nice hands. I always use my shirttail to clean my classes when I'm out and about. There's this guy in my area I've used before. He repairs glasses while you wait. I'll have to see if he can maybe buff the scratches out. I have a scratch protection coating on the lenses, but I've only had the glasses for about six months, and they're already badly scratched.

Here's a cleaning hack I've found very handy to remove the effects of hairspray over-spray on the front of my glasses (because I'm too blind to take them off when I'm applying hairspray): rubbing alcohol applied to a cloth, gently rubbed on the glasses, than rinsed off with water. I got this trick from the eyeglass store I bought my glasses from in when I went back a long time ago to complain that the lens coatings were decomposing (they weren't). Works like a charm on my 6+ years old lenses.

I had the problem of my glasses sliding down my face too tried silicone pads on the glasses but the glue wore off shortly after. What I found worked was to heat the arms of the glasses with a hairdryer for a minute the bend the arms inwards a bit. This way the arms grip behind your head making them more stable and comfortable to wear. If all you do is make the arms bend round your ears this can make them sore after a while, so using your head to stabilise the glasses is more effective

i’ve used glasses repair kits that come with replacement screws, an appropriate screw driver, a small magnifying glass, and a small microfibre cloth. it’s a great investment if you tend to break your glasses a lot!

I've been going crazy at work all day with my glasses falling off of my face....I did the check out where they needed bending by putting them on a table...worked PERFECTLY!!!! I use Palmolive dish soap....it also works quite well. I'm sure there are others. One of the main ingredients in dish soap breaks down oil and grease, and makes it easier to wipe off.

I wish I'd seen that toothpick method a couple of weeks ago: I lost a screw from one arm of my glasses and TEMPOARILY had to resort to using a piece of that gardening twisty wire through the hinge.
On the other hand, it gave me reason to get my eyes retested so now I'm getting 2 pairs of nice new prescription glasses.
One thing that has saved my glasses several times is, I use a lanyard. If my glasses do fall off, the lanyard will hopefully save them.
Hey doc, i just started using glasses few days ago, I do see really better with them but how ever sometime I see for example some objects if they are square I see them a little rectangle.. anyway there is one side of the lens that has more magnification than the other would it be because I’m not use to it?
When I started wearing glasses for distance in the 3rd grade 5 decades ago, I took them off to play piano: the keys curved up at the side of my vision like the skate board tubes. I eventually got used to it, went to gas permeable contacts, now back to glasses, but with progressive lenses for reading. The doc on this channel would have a technical explanation for side distortion.

Hey Randy! Thanks for the great question. Depending on your prescription and how think the lenses are (also the type of lens) But oftentimes people will see things bent or distorted, usually when there is high astigmatism or if there is a progressive bifocal in the lens. In addition, if someone looks through the lens further away from the center of the lens...more distortion is usually seen. If you have never worn glasses before or there is a large change in prescription, then perhaps it could be just getting used to them. Usually will take about 2 weeks for most people.

Be careful when using any ammonia product like latex paint or windex. Any spatter onto the surface of your AR-coated lenses (antireflective) may attack the coating making your lenses useless. I had this bad experience from latex paint spatter.

Just another little tip for when your eyeglasses slide down your face. Take some of those hair rubber bands that the girls use to tie their pony tails in and tie them around your ear pieces of your glasses. I do this daily when I’m not wearing my contacts and my eyeglasses never move. They stay in place. This comes in handy during the summer time when you sweat.

I wore glasses for literally EVERYTHING for 61yrs. Horribly nearsighted/glaucoma.
In March the eye doctor said unequivocally I would be blind in months without an eye operation and then maybe still. In July while driving down I-77 going 75 mph I said Fock it and threw my glasses on the dash and kept saying "I SEE FINE! "I SEE FINE".
Never put them back on. Never will.
The mind never knows if you are telling the truth or not but the body responds as if. It did respond as if and...…….. Every day stronger.

I used fine wire from a bread tie to replace the screw that holds the frame together. When I presented the glasses for repair I was commended for having been able to thread the wire through twice before twisting it tight.
Another alternative, if you lose the screw is to use a sewing pin or a piece of wire. Just make sure when bending the ends that you don't accidentally scratch the lenses and the ends are positioned that they won't accidentally stab you later.
This is how I fixed my dad's glasses, saved the need for replacing them or going to the optician.

If your glasses slide down, take one thin elastic hair band (hair tie) and wrap it around the near edge of your glasses and do the same with the other side. Put glasses on. Hey presto 🙂 OR if u have a round elastic head band (so your hair doesn't frizz) slip glasses through it. The band must go over the sides of your glasses. Boom 😎

If you lost a screw, just take it to optical shop, most places won’t even charge you. Doing all these hacks makes it worse for an optician.

I just found out that I needed glasses for schoolwork and I was terrified. It may not seem like a big deal, and I should’ve known that I would eventually need glasses because of how many people in my family wear them. However, I never wore glasses before and I’m worried that my normal vision will start to become blurry and I’ll need the glasses for everyday occasions.
Nah, glasses don't make your actual vision any worse. The only reason people say it looks so much more blurry once they take them off is because their brain gets used to being in focus.
@@Semor-bn1lh tell that to my eyes. My glasses were intended for class work "only". They ended up being needed for distance relatively quick. You become use to the sharper focus and end up wearing them more than is recommended. No one had been able to come up with a practical solution that would have allowed me to follow the doctors order and make me less dependent on them. I was in 3rd grade when I got my 1st pair of glasses (was bullied the rest of the school year for wearing them.) I am now in my early 50's. With a prescription nearing the high power range.
I had a problem with my glasses slipping down my nose. As I was watching your video at the beginning I noticed your tip about "nerdwax". I thought, "interesting"! But as I was watching, I took my glasses off and slightly bent the frames that go around my ears. Problem solved! Thanks.

Doc, go on Amazon. For $10 you can buy a 500pc. assortment of tiny screws in two dozen sizes. Complete with tiny screwdriver. Can fix many things for many years. And, your optician usually isn't a good mechanic. If you use one drop of LocTite threadlock on the screw, it will never fall out again. But can be unscrewed.

Any tips for a foggy lens? Like you came from a very cold room then moved to somewhere else warmer ending up having mist or fogs on the lens
That is a tough one. I have tried many anti fog solutions and other hacks but nothing really works that well. Nothing I would recommend anyway.

Best to stay away from HOT water as that can ruin the coatings.
Ronald G. Water alone won’t get rid of any oils transferred to the lenses, that’s where the dish soap/lens cleaner comes in.
I agree, but what I'm suggesting is just a quick "fix" from dust, smug, finger prints, sneeze/water drops AND then a wipe with a cloth, towels, etc. I find it necessary to do this once or twice a day. If your suggesting that washing with dish detergent EVERYDAY is the way to go, then say so. I'll do that! Thanks, for commenting.

Great videos! Are there any magnifying reading glasses that can be worn over regular prescription glasses? I'm a musician and it's getting harder to read the music on the page. I have new prescription glasses, but wondering if there are any products that will enlarge the printed page? Thanks.
Perhaps...I like thin optics, they may work. As they clip onto the nose.
Look for magnifiers for craftwork. There are several types.
When I clean my glasses, I hold them under running warm water...making sure that the nose piece and the frame and lenses all get a good rinse. I don't use soap. Then, I use a soft hand towel to dry them. I don't get scratches/streaks/smudges at all this way. It's important to get the nose pieces/place clean so that you don't get skin irritations from the glasses resting on your face.
That's what I do too and I'm legally blind so I can't see the smudges on my glasses if I don't have glasses on, the hot water method is what works the best for me since then I don't have to spot clean.

I had my plastic framed glasses adjusted by a professional and she broke them. Took a long time to get them replaced as those frames were discontinued.

I have a tip I tried for frames where the screw threads are worn but you want to keep your glasses. At the hardware store they have packages of shrink tubing in different sizes. It's usually for connecting wire but works really well for glass arms. You get a slightly larger size than your arm. You connect the arm the the frame through the tubing then heat it with a lighter. That stuff shrinks up immediately and holds tight! Looks way nicer than tape. The arm won't bend of course. It can be cut off later with an exacto knife. I left mine on and wore it that way for a very long time before I finally got some new frames.
having used shrink wrap many times for its normal purpose I never would have thought of this. Not a bad idea for a tight spot.
Your channel is so helpful to anyone who wears glasses or needs to. I've worn glasses since I was a kid and hate them. I did wear contacts until I had my last child and have not been able to wear them since. The optometrist I used to go to always adjusted my glasses to fit perfectly but he retired and the last one I went to didn't even offer - which I thought was absolute laziness on their part. The optometrist was great, but the staff was less than poor. The glasses have never fit correctly and have always caused even more discomfort than necessary. Won't be going back there any time soon.
