  • When commercial television started people were very excited about adverts. People had more money in their pockets and wanted to know what they could buy. TWW decided to dedicate a whole series of programmes to advertising, called Admag. In this episode Philip Harben, the first celebrity television chef, visits the Welsh Food Show held at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff.
Roedd gan bobol fwy o arian yn y chwedegau ac roedden nhw am syniadau ar sut i wario eu harian. Gymaint oedd cyffro'r gyneulleidfa o weld hysbysebion ar deledu masnachol, fel i TWW benderfynu creu cyfres o'r enw Admag, yn llawn hysbysebion. Yn y bennod yma mae Philip Harben, y seleb cogionio cyntaf ar y teledu, yn ymweld a Gwyl Fwyd Cymru a gynhalwyd yng Ngerddi Soffia Caerdydd.

My aunt was taught catering cookery by Philip Harben. She went on to become a BOAC stewardess , then managed the BOAC restaurant in Victoria.

Philip is great! I have a copy of his "The Pocket Book of Modern Cookery" pub 1951 - it's my cooking "Bible"
Great upload, lots of great memories and excellent quality!

I looked him up on UA-cam because he was very funny on an episode of What's My Line? from March 25, 1956.

I am confused. I have never heard of American rice. I even googled it and it doesn't seem to exist. Did brits somehow not know rice was an asian food?

Rice is grown in America too. And in Australia. Why wouldn't it be? And they claim that their soil isn't as polluted with chemical fertilisers as Asian soil is.

Yes, back then they called it American rice ... is it Uncle Ben's these days? Nowadays I only buy Basmati rice!
