It was composed after the Italian victories against British Army in Africa, such as the Conquest of Cassala, the Italian Invasion of Egypt, and the Italian conquest of the British Somalia.

I'm Italian and I live in a small village where an elderly 99 year old english soldier lives. His story is incredible because he was a prisoner before 1943 but he liked Italy so much that he decided to stay.
He was a prisoner at the Rezzanello Castle in a climate of substantial respect on the part of the Italian soldiers and of close relationships of friendship and camaraderie born within the four walls of the castle. An ideal camp, it was defined in the inspections of the Swiss Red Cross and experienced by the officials more as a resort than a prison, where in addition to Bridge they played volleyball, listened to music, organized theatrical performances and where the illustrated magazine was also produced “Rezzanello Revue”.
That's an amazing story!

If the Italian army was a fraction as good as their military music, they would have won the War. I am familiar with much of it (understand most of it), and they had some of the best of the world's operatic tenors, baritones and orchestras performing it.
There was a song book "Cannzioneri di soldato Italiano.' Many were designed so you can march while singing them.
The Italian army was good, just unprepared for a global war and used in too many fronts.
Without US support, the UK would had LOST the WW2 for sure. Declaring war against US it was a blatant mistake both for Italy and Germany. More on that, since Japan didn't share the information on the Pearl Harbor attack, in it going against the Tripartite Pact.

What "April" are they referring? In April 1940 Italy was still neutral- she did not enter there war until June- and by April 1941 it was clear (in both Greece and North Africa) that the Italian army could not do anything without German help.
