Richter is Richter. The Italians say about Caruso: "Di Caruso, non si discute." I've always thought the same thing about Richter. There are artists who are simply above criticism or discussion. Richter is one of them.

Richter and Kondrashin; two of Russia's finest. This is a 'reference' recording if ever I heard one.

I have heard many, really many "attempts" to make this concerto sound "right". Even the Cziffra/Cziffra version. My ears and heart settled for the STUDIO, not necessarily this live recording, by Richter/Kondrashin/LSO alone.
I remember opening my Christmas present and listening to this for the first time, and sitting there totally mesmerized, not knowing what had hit me. It unleashes like a unstoppable force of nature, with a take no prisoners agenda. The tempos, the heart-on-sleeve melodies and wild turbulences of life are absolutely balanced and rounded of throughout, no "fancy stuff" in the opening double octaves, no "niceties", no rubato, no start slow-accelerate BS. Richter and Kondrashin were totally unafraid to "give us the works". Over the years i realized HOW UNSURPASSED and GLORIOUS the studio recording, again, not necessarily this live version, really is.
Too many pianists and conductors seem afraid of playing Liszt like an unleashed force of nature and play this way too neatly and with too much restraint, no need to give names. No one can carry in a lit candelabra and hold it to Richter on that one.
For almost 50 years I've been convinced that Richter has made various unique, glorious recordings that stand out head and shoulders above everybody
    else's.
Eg Richter/Wislocki for Rach 2nd, Richter/Karajan/Vienna Phil for Tchaikovsky 1st., Schubert Wanderer Fantasie, Dvořák piano concerto with Carlos Kleiber,.. whereas i can't bring myself to listening to his Bach and Mozart recordings, LOL,...thanks for the upload.

Thanks for the highly valuable post praising Richter.i cannot agree more. Those studio recordings are all gems. This PC n°1 although live is precious too.Richter recorded these two gems(the second concerto on the same LP) in the days that followed his concert of these two concerti in London in july 1961.Of all the takes there could have been created at least 6 or 8 Lps but Richter was never satisfied....until this was finally validated by the maestro. He himself said they were amongst his best studio recordings ever.
I started collection Richter's Lps in 1970-now YT brings up some hidden material....may be you have gems that I don' thave..let us trade...

What about Richter's Mozart No. 22 and Handel's HWV 426-433? I cannot live without them.

Some day the trianglist was Alexander Glazunov. Not at that time, of course. :))) But Glazunov liked to conduct and at least to play in the orchestra as often as was possible. :))

Richter was a superhuman pianist, but who frequently made tiny bloopers none of which actually detracted from his playing and readings. Most pianists regard him as a giant...induplicable.

Wuja buja, Lang bang, Katia batia... why are they even allowed to play in public... beyond comprehension. Sometime... I doubt that Richter was a flesh and blood creature. What exactly, I cannot say. Maybe supernatural...
