Richter plays Grieg Piano Concerto in A minor Op 16

  • "I consider this recording of the Grieg Concerto with Matacic one of my genuine successes. Even after listening to it several times, I haven't changed my mind. I only hope that I am not wrong."
    "I've always liked the Grieg Concerto. I like it for its ruggedness, virility and coldness: a bracing north wind blows through it, and when the piano enters in the second movement, you'd think you could hear a bird singing from the top of a tall pine tree. I also like it for its originality and its total absence of mawkishness."--Richter

    восторженного упоения ее скромной красотой. Финал -бурный, ликующий -звучит как апофеоз жизни и гимн человеку.

    As Richter's teacher Neuhaus related in his book 'The Art of Playing Piano' the concerto was vilified as 'second class' music, also confirmed in an interview with Arthur Rubinstein who said his piano teacher was saying exactly the same. Richter thus took a great risk to play it but he did the right thing. It is one of the greatest piano concerts written and Richter's success was taken for granted when he was first performing it with Monte Carlo State Orchestra with Matacic, a great conductor. It is the single one concerto I always wanted to play and can actually play it-actually the cadenza of the first movement which is extremely difficult to play.

    I consider this to be one of the three greatest Romantic Era piano concertos ever written. The other two are the Schumann concerto in A minor and Beethoven's fourth piano concerto in G major. Since it's impossible to compare Romantic Era concerti to those of the Classical Era, I should point out that I consider Mozart to have been the greatest composer of piano concerti who has ever lived.

    • @gerryr1852
      @gerryr1852 10 років тому +2

      Reply to self - I also consider Mozart to have been the greatest composer of all time with Beethoven ranked second but with a large gap between the two. Had Mozart not died of Scarlet Fever (the current theory) and lived to be 55 his works in the early Romantic Era would undoubtedly been staggering.

    • @BenSardinas
      @BenSardinas 10 років тому

      Gerry Rains Mozart most likely died of nephritis and antimony poisoning. I do agree with your assessment of his work. What would we have been blessed with had he lived a bit longer?!

    Does Richter ever take over that cadenza in movement one! Overall, it's an original and clarifying, perhaps slightly austere interpretation, but a great work like this can take many interpretations and only grow. The musicians do seem very ON in this. Grieg himself said he never heard it played better than when Liszt sight read it (!) for him.

    stupendo, ma le interpretazioni dello stesso concerto di: Gilels, Rubinstein, ABM sono di un altro pianeta. Tecnica impeccabile, lirismo profondo, dinamiche brillanti e tonalità luminose.
    Anche quelle di M.Argerich e Radu Lupu sono stupende, ma non raggiungono la raffinatezza e la chiarezza d'espressione di questi tre.

    By comparing and scaling these great musicians you are diminishing art itself. Every artist has its own mind, sensibility and technique which gives us varieties and choices. It is a matter of taste, not quality. Please do not make art into a competition. It is insulting to this wonderful composer and pianists.

      +dve kifle pcela, Oh please. Beethoven held several piano duels against other pianists and composers where they competed in improvisation etc. Then there's the story of Bach and Marchand organizing a harpsichord duel, which Marchand forfeited upon hearing Bach warming up on the instrument. Handel and Scarlatti dueled on organ and harpsichord, Handel winning the organ part and Scarlatti besting Handel on the harpsichord. Liszt and Thalberg famously battled to be crowned greatest pianist on earth. They competed to write the most awe-inspiring opera transcriptions etc. Heck, even many people argue that the idea of competition is built-into the concerto form itself. Some composers have overtly envision their concerti as battles between the soloist and orchestra. This is why Glenn Gould was always ill-at-ease with the concerto repertoire, because he instinctively felt this rivalry. Composers have been famously jealous of the popularity of another composer. There's books written about it, for pete's sake.

    • @craigresnianky6909
      @craigresnianky6909 6 років тому +4

      The reality is that on some level, there are musicians who are better at their chosen instruments than others. Some composers are better than others. I unequivocally think Bach was a better/greater composer than someone like Elton John. Call me crazy, but that's what I think.

      This is a perspective. Of course I can understand your joy when you hear from these outstanding personalities such R. Lupu or A. Runbinstein the real golden sound you are reffering to, but try to understand also the other perspective: If someone is NOT searching to achive the golden sound for or from E. Grieg but tries to give a very special, individual, in a way private and unique sound to this piece, than here it is. I swear I hear a norwegian composer trying to express his youth, his feelings, his architecture and his personality. This is what Richter always tries and achieves: To give the listener a very unique "portrait" of the piece and the composer, but without any artificial effort, so that at the end you think, you are hearing the piece itself, and not Richter.
