Have been going over this with my son. We often like to make up memory devices for categorical subjects, for example, this might help you cover the points/areas needed to explain the period ('the evidence' as the instructor here mentioned): "STARTeD" S= Structure T= Texture A= Articulation R = Rhythm T = Tonality e D = Dynamics Arm yourself with terminology which you can use to explain each of the concepts as well, for example make sure you know and can properly use terms like 'cadence' (relates mainly to Tonality I guess), 'monophonic/polyphonic' (under Structure); etc. On a final note - give thanks to God for music and ask for His blessing...

Really nice to hear your analysis. I especially liked the romantic piece with the use of all the dim 7's and plan to incorporate more of this idea in my improvisation at the organ. Thank you for your excellent instruction.
I soo glad I found you, aural is the scariest part of the exam for me. I passed all my 7 grades with distinctions with exeption of 7 being a pass! Grade 8 I intend to aim for distinction and a challange to be self taught. thanks fro this!

It's in 4/4, atonal, sort of Schoenbergish, in no particular key. Second one is a minuet, sort of early Mozart as a child or simple Bach in flavour, either baroque or classical period.
Having my grade 8 piano exam in less than three days, I got no confidence in either scales or pieces, so hopefully it will went well in aural test. This video was so helpful, thank you so much!
Does inversion mean when you play a chord starting with a different note than the name of the scale? Example: instead of F major being F-A-C, can F major also be A-C-F and C-F-A?
Yes. In F Major FAC is chord l in root position. With A in the Bass the same chord would be in first inversion. With C in the Bass the same chord would be in second inversion.
I'm German and I'm in England at the moment and will do the grade 8 exam in march and I'm horrified because I'm a very shy and nervous person that I will forget all the words to describe music because I've never done it before...

The very first four chords sound very similar to those used in the theme of Beethoven's grosse fugue!

on the 2nd example, I answered classical era since the melodies are dominant to their accompaniment. is my answer correct ?? is this piece minuette baroque or classical ??
The main thing is that you give good reasons to back up your conclusions. The more you work at this the better you will be on period identification. All the best.
Yes. But I would like to know if I was correct in my conclusions (re the 3 pieces you played in the video). BTW... Love your videos. So very helpful. Thank you.
Is there a grade 6 aural video, I wanna start doing grade 6 aural but I don’t understand all this stuff My teacher just expects me to hear and understand the chords. But how?
+Music Matters well... honestly it wasn't good. i was so nervous that i made more mistakes in the performance than i did while practicing. also, the examiner was really rushing through everything, which made me panic more... i really should work on trying not to be so nervous. i'm really scared that i won't pass. there's a likely chance.
Sir, if I am playing a chord progression on the guitar and hum a melody(vague) and want them to be structured into musical notes, Is there any easy way to do it?
+rajesh krishnan Good question. Try to work out which note of the chord is in your melody then you could start to write down the pitches. Then you can add the rhythm later.
Its easier said than done. Writing a melody first is easier than working with chord progressions. As a beginner I find that music is more expressive when I start working with progressions ,but finding notes from my voice is challenging.It will be a different story when we use keyboard to write a melody with some progression.Thank you very much for your reply,Sir.
Sometimes one hears features that could point to one period or another. The important thing is to examine the collective evidence. When you listen to the explanation on the video hopefully the collective evidence makes the picture clearer.
Dear Sir, Can you tell us about the schooling system, how many grades are there? Is it 10, (like 6 elementary + 4 high school)? Or is it 12 as a conservatory? Here to prepare my grade 8 exam because i failed my grade 6 bcs i was so nervous after knowing 20 minutes before the exam that you can actually fail the exam :,)
Aural is all about what we can hear that enhances our understanding of what’s going on in music. At the end of the day music is all about sound so it’s an essential skill for any musician. At www.mmcourses.co.uk we have step by step courses in Aural development.
+Aaron Thomas You have to listen to whether the chords are dissonant/ not in a key or whether they are rich/ colourful chords that are still basically in a key.
Haha that’s true! After studying a little about atonal music, I realized that it’s not that difficult after all.. Late romantic pieces could be a problem though, since they often have (in my opinion) weird structures. My exam is tomorrow, and since I performed Chopin’s op 10 no.12 last week at a concert, some people tell me that grade 8 will be a cakewalk. Sure, the pieces are easy to play, but no one talks about aural tests and sight reading! :-)
It's the Neopolitian maj or Min....Harmonic minor b2 or Melodic minor b2 The're in the egmatic scale family....such as the double harmronic minor. FULL Dminished scale are SYMETRICAL...Augmented triads are also symetrical. Example the last mode the Harmonic minor mode is a full diminished. The church banned the full diminisded becuase it sounds demonic.. It's true..i play it on my guitar all the time acsending or decending..it sounds like Im listening the Bach.lmao However..you can also alter it to Augmented traid, I think people are just programmed or conditioned to believe certain things...I thinks these scale sounds beautiful Example in A hamronic minor..G#, C, E,....it's all MAJOR Intervals. or G # B, D, F....minors.lol Since it's symtrical...You can (you know ...) D full diminished while over the IV chord or the vi chord too.lmao The same concept with the Augmented... The N6...Some sort of a MAJOR.... .lets say Im in C maj A minor...Im going to play the C#..( b II) If i play C # maj...the 5th is maj7 of A harmonic minor...or the #4 of D ... I dont have a problem playing the D double harmonic minor or D lydian b3 from there.lol Or i can play C harmonic Major....b6 is Ab...and descend into A minor easy...Ab into G.. If I play AUGMENT ( #5)...it'll simply be the ROOT of A minor. C# can be a part of the last mode of the D melodic minor...( it gets alter from dimished to augmented...Right????.lol) C# Dominant...the b7 can be the same note of the maj6 of D dorian or D melodic minor..lol There's so much you can do with it...it'll also act as like a leading tone into the IV from A minor... People just need to learn how to use these diminished or augmented triads. Or they can listen to PEOPLE are STRANGE..by the doors.lmao It's a cool songs for reasons...it's in E minor..it has a Bb and B dominant.lol
Music Matters Music theory is cool...because they're not accidents notes if people play those notes on purpose .lol I guess they had to label it something. Plus I dont randomly play whatever the heck notes in the chromatic scale and pray it'll sound good. The distortion box never helped..it just made it sound more distorted.lol. I sound so much better and play with more confidence now that I comprehend it. I actaully get alot of compliments on my playing now...Back when...they would tell me to... turn it down.lol Modern music use modulation more than people thinks...The Mission Impossible for example.... Also a alot of classical music modulate between the different scales. They;re not exotic scales. it just people havnt learn them.lol But even alot of pop music modulate. California Dreaming...also Vamp the V with a dominant at the very end to lead back into the tonic... Crowed House...Dont dream is over..bascally dose the samething..It just starts off from relative Maj as a SUS9 chord..Then just the b7 instead of the octive Chill Peppers...Under the Bridge. The intro is in a different key, Then he just shift to a different Key..The song is just Cannon.lol

Have been going over this with my son. We often like to make up memory devices for categorical subjects, for example, this might help you cover the points/areas needed to explain the period ('the evidence' as the instructor here mentioned):
"STARTeD"
S= Structure
T= Texture
A= Articulation
R = Rhythm
T = Tonality
e
D = Dynamics
Arm yourself with terminology which you can use to explain each of the concepts as well, for example make sure you know and can properly use terms like 'cadence' (relates mainly to Tonality I guess), 'monophonic/polyphonic' (under Structure); etc.
On a final note - give thanks to God for music and ask for His blessing...
Useful way to remember things.

The main thing is that you give good reasons to back up your conclusions. The more you work at this the better you will be on period identification. All the best.

I heard the diminished seventh chords and thought it was Beethoven :\
Why is it not a classical era piece?
Sometimes one hears features that could point to one period or another. The important thing is to examine the collective evidence. When you listen to the explanation on the video hopefully the collective evidence makes the picture clearer.

Aural is all about what we can hear that enhances our understanding of what’s going on in music. At the end of the day music is all about sound so it’s an essential skill for any musician. At www.mmcourses.co.uk we have step by step courses in Aural development.
@@MusicMattersGB Thanks
My first thought of exercise 1 was Jazz, but also, it doesn't sound really good to me! 😂
😀
Helpful
That’s kind. See www.mmcourses.co.uk for much more about our online courses and details of Music Matters Maestros.
brilliant
Many thanks. See www.mmcourses.co.uk for much more
Oh no, I would've said the third example was 20th century because it sounded quite clashy😭😱

You have to listen to whether the chords are dissonant/ not in a key or whether they are rich/ colourful chords that are still basically in a key.
Music Matters Thank you so much, that really helps🙏😀😍

I'd have said the 2nd piece was classical era, woops. It did not seem complex enough for Baroque. It had a clear melody and was quite light and peppy.
The challenge is always to look at collective evidence. Hope the films help to do this.
Ughhhh the first and the last piece sounded like total chromatic porridge.... I hope the examiner doesn't give me one of those
Nevertheless easy to talk about.
I got distinction!! :)
Congratulations!
I just finished my grade 5 violin and I got merit cos I failed at aural (13/18) so I got merit lmao and now I’m gonna fail for grade 8 piano this year
Have a look at our course on Grade 8 Aural Tests at www.mmcourses.co.uk

Hi. Thanks. Lots of theory material at www.mmcourses.co.uk
Enjoy!
aw man, i fell for the second one....
Keep going and it will get more secure. Much more at www.mmcourses.co.uk
It's the Neopolitian maj or Min....Harmonic minor b2 or Melodic minor b2
The're in the egmatic scale family....such as the double harmronic minor.
FULL Dminished scale are SYMETRICAL...Augmented triads are also symetrical.
Example the last mode the Harmonic minor mode is a full diminished.
The church banned the full diminisded becuase it sounds demonic..
It's true..i play it on my guitar all the time acsending or decending..it sounds like Im listening the Bach.lmao
However..you can also alter it to Augmented traid, I think people are just programmed
or conditioned to believe certain things...I thinks these scale sounds beautiful
Example in A hamronic minor..G#, C, E,....it's all MAJOR Intervals. or G # B, D, F....minors.lol
Since it's symtrical...You can (you know ...) D full diminished while over the IV chord
or the vi chord too.lmao
The same concept with the Augmented...
The N6...Some sort of a MAJOR....
.lets say Im in C maj A minor...Im going to play the C#..( b II)
If i play C # maj...the 5th is maj7 of A harmonic minor...or the #4 of D ...
I dont have a problem playing the D double harmonic minor or D lydian b3 from there.lol Or i can play C harmonic Major....b6 is Ab...and descend into A minor
easy...Ab into G..
If I play AUGMENT ( #5)...it'll simply be the ROOT of A minor.
C# can be a part of the last mode of the D melodic minor...( it gets alter from dimished to augmented...Right????.lol) C# Dominant...the b7 can be the same note
of the maj6 of D dorian or D melodic minor..lol
There's so much you can do with it...it'll also act as like a leading tone into the IV
from A minor...
People just need to learn how to use these diminished or augmented triads.
Or they can listen to PEOPLE are STRANGE..by the doors.lmao
It's a cool songs for reasons...it's in E minor..it has a Bb and B dominant.lol
+kim young
The more you get into harmony the more fascinating it becomes.
Music Matters Music theory is cool...because they're not accidents notes if people play those notes on purpose .lol
I guess they had to label it something. Plus I dont randomly play whatever the heck notes in the chromatic scale and pray it'll sound good. The distortion box never helped..it just made it sound more distorted.lol.
I sound so much better and play with more confidence now that I comprehend it.
I actaully get alot of compliments on my playing now...Back when...they would tell me to... turn it down.lol
Modern music use modulation more than people thinks...The Mission Impossible for example....
Also a alot of classical music modulate between the different scales. They;re not exotic scales. it just people havnt learn them.lol
But even alot of pop music modulate.
California Dreaming...also Vamp the V with a dominant at the very end to lead back into
the tonic...
Crowed House...Dont dream is over..bascally
dose the samething..It just starts off from
relative Maj as a SUS9 chord..Then just
the b7 instead of the octive
Chill Peppers...Under the Bridge.
The intro is in a different key, Then he just shift
to a different Key..The song is just Cannon.lol
I am only nine years old to have the grade 8 exam
+Lai Henry
Good luck. Let us know how it goes.
It could be worse, you could be asked to play that dissonant piece by memory. I couldn't. It's gibberish.
