Jeep dealership wanted me to charge me $360 to replace the bulb. After I saw this video I called the service manager and went off, I was pissed. I now have a light again for $7 and 5 minutes of my time. Thank you for this video!!
This video was perfect. Very helpful! Just a tip for anyone having trouble getting the knob loose, I threw on some rubber backed garden gloves, grabbed my rubber jar opener then sat on my center console. It took all my might but got the job done.
I just wanted to drop a note of thanks. I didn’t know if there was a light in the console or not, but not only did your video show me there was, but made it very easy for me to fix it. To be honest, I was very skeptical with your “it takes five minutes”. I thought sure, if you’ve done it a dozen times. But, much to my surprise, it took me five minutes. Thanks again!!!
I was also wondering if I was nuts thinking if there were lights there before. lol Why was removing the gear shift know difficult? I haven't tried it yet. He seems to just pop it out.
Realized on my drive home that my shifter light was out. Thought to myself...how the heck am I going to fix that? Jumped online and found your video. Ordered part on Amazon. Removed plastic around shifter (The 4X4 shifter was a bit tough). Did all this within 30 minutes with the outstanding video you shared! Thank you for taking the time to help others.
Thanks for the easy to understand instructions on how to replace the bulb. My son just bought a 2014 Rubicon and the first time we drove it at night noticed I couldn't see where the shift lever was going and had to turn on the overhead light to put it in gear. I figured it was probably something simple like a burnt out bulb and this explains everything. Thanks again, awesome instructions.
Nice. got my jeep 6 months ago and i didn't nice they didn't light up but my wife didn't like it. I just figured it was another thing jeep just didn't have. this took me five minutes to do. Thanks!!!
Thanks Jeep Man. Everyone told me that there was no light for the gear shifter, then I googled your video. Like most others I had to wiggle and pull the 4x4 handle to get it off. Once I did, everything in the video was as you instructed. Thanks again!
Can confirm that this bulb works on a 2017. Hardest part was getting the 4WD knob off, but it eventually gave with a little "gentle persuasion." Thanks for the video. It took longer waiting in line at the autoparts store than it took to actually replace the bulb.
Thank you so much for your help. We just picked up a new to us 2014 JKU and the shift lights weren’t on. Assumed it was normal, but there later found out that is not the case. Found your video on how to fix. Super easy!!
This is pretty easy. No need to pay a mechanic to do it, especially for the cost. Only thing I did different was install an colored (Pink, which is actually purplish) LED light from Amazon. 6 pack cost me $8. I did this before after I purchased the Jeep in Sept 2020 because the OEM light was out, but after a year, the led went out again…not sure what’s up with that. If you do install an LED, check it before putting back together (polarity matters). If it doesn’t work, pull it out and flip it and check again. Then reinstall as Jeep Guy demonstrates. Took me less than 5 minutes
Thanks , getting the knob off was the hardest thing for me but and telling me what bulb to get was great the guy at auto parts store couldn't find it in his computer lol. Completed repair in less than an hour.
Love the video My bulb is burnt as well changing it tomorrow, Question you put trans and 4 wheel both into neutral, when you start reassembling trans is in park, Does that matter? Cheers
Shifter location is on the dash too fyi Just changed the bulb in mine but couldn’t get the Tcase knob off but I got it changed without removing shift knob
@@stevengipson5922 you can do it without pulling knob it’s just a lot tighter but can be done. Pull it down into 4wd and it will give you room under there to change with still on
So I have a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Sport Unlimited where I had the same problem I watched a different video same thing real simple to fix problem is I tested it but I didn't turn the vehicle on and test it so I go to do early morning overtime and I want to see it come on in the dark about 1:30 in the morning but I used my remote start to start the vehicle and I think somewhere between that and putting the key in and turning it to the Run position it shorted it out probably before I put key in because when I got in the vehicle it wasn't it wasn't on and I know the light came on the day before when I was just testing it. Sorry for the long winded sentence but I'm wondering if anybody out there knows what else I can do to fix it because I just wasted half of that $6 but the same exact part they blew it before I even got a chance to put the wheels in motion open suggestions and willing to listen thanks
I have a 2012 Jeep Patriot, the backlight behind the gear shift area does not light up. I have looked briefly over the internet/youtube to try to find out how to change the light but cannot find anything. Does anyone know how to replace the bulb? Thanks!
Hopefully you will see this comment since it's been 3 years but I am having a real tough time pulling off my 4 wheel drive shifter knob...any hints would be greatly appreciated. It's just not popping off as easily for me😢
I believe these are the ones I used You may want to verify the fitment I still haven’t had to change it since day one And the blue Light is actually A good look at night 👍🏻 Hope it helped

I couldn't get the 4WD knob off but thanks to the video I knew where to reach underneath the trim piece and find the wire & bulb
Thanks so much! I would never have thought it would be so easy. Struggled with the knob but got it done.
How does the knob come off? Is there a ring you have to pop off the bottom like the knob on the shifter?
Great Video! Ordered the bulb, came 2 in a pack. Super easy to do and did most of it one handed, LOL
Bulb was burnt. Thanks!!
Thx man, for others who struggle to remove 4wd shift knob, i manage to do it without removing it, from space where gearshift is.

How did you pop the four wheel drive knob off so easily? Did you loosen it up somehow first?
Just pull real hard and it will pop right off. Yes, I pulled it off before the video.
Thank you!!!!!!!!
Do you have a video how to fix the AC control knobs position indicator lights?

The hardest part about this was removing the 4 wheel drive knob!
Thank u sir
This one is very easy to do... Anyone have a video for a 2009?
So I replaced the light bulb but it still wont come on is there anything else you can think of that I need to replace or look at? Thanks in advance.
Make sure it’s pushed in all the way. If it still doesn’t work then it’s probably the wire itself or the metal connectors where your bulb slides in
Holy hell I can’t get the 4x4 knob off. Tried everything.
I ended up just pulling the plastic piece up as high as I could and squeezing my hands underneath and getting to it. Painful, but it worked.
Yeah it was a difficult task but I pulled hard on it till it popped off. That way works as well 👍🏻
Can you put an led instead of that kind of bulb?
I guess as long as connector on bulb is the same it would work
@@White_Trash_JKU yeah man it did fit. In fact a T5 led bulb fitted in this 37 socket

I’m having the same problem. Can’t take the shifter knob off.
@@christylovec2806 You don’t have to take the knob off the bezel will lift up enough to get your hand underneath to get to the bulb
You don’t have to remove the shifter knob only the 4wd knob.. pull really hard and 4wd shift knob will pop off. 👍🏻
@@White_Trash_JKU I did get it off after a few attempts. Thanks. I fix my light problem myself. Great video.
Does this process work for a 2011 Jeep Compass?
I’m not 100% sure but if it has lights in the prndl then more than likely it’s a small bulb right under it just like the jeep wrangler
Is there a fuse for it?
Yeah but I think it’s tied into other items.
@@White_Trash_JKU ok thanks

Pull with all you have lol
Don’t pull by the wire. It will rip out. I did that :( broke forever now.
That knob came off very easy, I can’t get mine off
I pulled it prior to video. You have to pull like crazy. However, if you don’t want to mess with it you can still change with it on just a tight fit
I can’t take out the 4x4 knob
Twist and pull hard.. it will release
Ive replaced mine numerous times -and it only lasts a week then burns out again
That’s probably from something wrong with wiring or a bad ground.
