Norm got fired from SNL because he refused to stop doing OJ jokes. There’s a compilation of them that’s like a half hour long. Courtney Thorne-Smith’s said she did in fact love this segment because she didn’t have anything positive to say about the movie.
I love that he refused to be muzzled over trashing a garbage human being who got away with a double murder. NBC execs who were buddies of OJ told him to stop trashing OJ or be fired and he went out and ROASTED OJ in the very next SNL episode. And was promptly canned! Lol
Actually they were going to fire Jim Downey, a writer on the show who worked closely with Norm, but Norm was not going to be fired. However Norm told them if they fired Jim they would have to fire him too so they did. Jim told that story on the Fly on the Wall podcast recently. Even he didn’t know what really happened until three years after the firing when Norm told him.
Courtney Thorne-Smith, the girl on Conan who did a movie with Carrot Top, said in an interview shortly after Norm passed away that she LOVED getting teased by Norm. She was not enthusiastic about promoting the movie, and she was grateful Norm hijacked the segment. She also said she and her father genuinely like that kind of comedy, so it was like a treat for her to experience it first hand. Those are her words.
Shoutout to her for being so cool. You could see Conan checking her out after each shot to make sure she was ok and she was enjoying it and just rolling with it. I also saw that statement she released after Norm’s death. Classy lady with a good sense of humor.
He was bloated from his cancer meds, not fat btw. He was on them for 10 years and never told anyone he was sick. Even his friends all found out after he died.
Norm is the GOAT!!! NO fucks given EVER. He says what he wants, and has been fired more than once for NOT toeing the television broadcast standards line. He is pure HONESTY incarnate, and I NEVER get tired of him just laying it out regardless of the consequences.
Norm was a very intelligent dude who was so good at playing the fool that he could catch everyone off guard with how quick witted he was, his comedic timing was perfect.
This showcases one thing I love about Norm: he deliberately used extremely tame "roasts", and ones that he knew wouldn't "land" as this was so much more funny. The sheer awkwardness was something to behold. You can tell why he loved The Office (original version) so much.
Norm genuinely enjoyed "bombing" and making the audience uncomfortable. He'd then come off stage and ask someone "How was that? That went great, right?" with a huge grin on his face. His clips on The View are awesome.
It's like he knew that he was on another level, and if he found it funny, he didn't care that much if everybody else did, or just a few people who really got him. I'm a huge fan of several comedians, Norm is truly a bit different than all of them. He was a great gift to humanity, truly.
🇩🇪 East Germany used to be a separate country. It was communist and they banned almost all outside western capitalist products. It became a well deserved target for jokes and many of their women athletes looked like men.
they are pretty famous for drugging their women up in the 80s. there are many world records in running that aren't broken until today. check out marita koch and you know what he meant
Watching this from my smart TV, but had to login to comment. Norm MacDonald was a comedic genius. Yes, he was that fast! Always one of my favorites, and we lost him way too soon. Rest in peace. Always love your reactions!
If you haven't already, I would recommend reacting to the full segment when Norm appeared on David Letterman when he retired. It was funny and emotional and showed a different side of Norm.
I'll never forget that one, really caught me off guard. There was some roundtable of people like Chappelle, Letterman, and others talking about Norm after he passed, you could tell how much his friends loved that dude. He was a great gift to all of us, truly.
@3:36 this joke is even more hilarious to me now, because of something I recall from about ten years ago. Back then he was doing his UA-cam podcast and I was obsessed with him, and I also followed him on Twitter. Norm actually made his own book club from on a different account named nmbookclub and I remember actually having the cool experience of him replying to me there (I think he was talking about why Tolstoy was a greater Russian author than Dostoevsky, which I disagree with). But then listening to him make this joke made it even funnier for me, because it confirms what most of his fans know, he was a truly brilliant, deep thinker but his favorite thing was to act like an ignorant rube.
1:20 Remember, the last ten years of his life or so he was under cancer treatment, so that affected how he looked. He kept that cancer a secret from virtually everyone. o
3:50 He was an old school kind of guy (although very subversive in a way). And he also enjoyed acting like he was older than he really was. I think he grew up around old people and always found them to be very funny. 16:42 The reason so many comedians look up to him is because his comedy was unique, because he did what he wanted to do independently of what was popular at the time, and because he wasn't fake. He was also a very smart person (and somewhat eccentric). In fact some big comedians of his time that loved and admired him were a bit worried that his career in comedy would not be successful in the long term, not because of a lack of talent, but precisely because of the things I listed earlier.
I really hope you stay on the Norm train, there’s so much great Norm content on here, the UA-cam page “I’m not Norm” posts great great videos of him. Sadly passed 2 years ago after a 9 year secret battle with cancer that only his mother , brother , son and manager knew about. All of his closest friends were blind sighted. Norm was the best, never tried to be mean
All these vids of when Norm was older (and heavier from medications), he had cancer, he knew he had cancer, and he knew it was going to kill him. And he told about 3 people, ever. Never asked for pity. He just kept going, and even making fun of himself. He is a total legend.
I love that you have gone down the Norm rabbit hole, and I agree with you: he was very attractive. I would still love it if you would do the whole Courtney Thorne Smith Norm MacDonald interview. I realize some of the best bits from it was included in this but the whole thing is hilarious, also the professor of logic joke.
Norm MacDonald was the KING of "Too Soon". loved it. Norm was asked to do one of those "Comedy Central roasts" The powers that be asked him to tone it down. His entire roast was reading from a 1950's joke book.
the bob saget roast. just an absolute masterclass on delivery. "I'm looking for some jokes so I'm reading Marmaduke. He's a dog who is much too big for the family to handle-- it's hilarious!"
Don’t you know that the word that begins with RE and ends in RD… was a clinical word. It only became seen as a slur when it was hurled loosely at others. It’s also a real verb meaning “to slow.” The adjective form, ending in ED was used legitimately to discuss those with slower faculties.
Many slurs start out as polite forms of replacing previous slurs, which themselves were polite replacements for even earlier slurs. Either way, we just pick a new way of saying the same thing a different way every few years. Then we get angry about how things used to be so mean.
I reheard a joke that our neighbour, Mr. Reynard told about a Redbird here, in London, but for the record, I word sound like a RE..RD if I referred to it here...
Back during the cold war, Germany was divided and the Olympics were very much a pride thing between the East and the West. The East German women were huge/muscular. That's where the joke comes from.
Hi Britt. Love your videos. Norm was an excellent comic and I'm glad you're discovering him. I even have on a Pink Floyd shirt today too- Dark Side of The Moon! All the best.
The one he did in SNL when OJ was acquitted was Savage. They showed a picture of OJ in the courtroom, and he said, " It's official, murder is legal in California!" It was relentless from that night on until they fired him.
"How does he know she's from East Germany?" After WWII, Germany got split into two countries, separated by a wall in Berlin. East Germany was its own country with its own athletes until they re-unified after the fall of the Soviet Union. USSR and East Germany were constantly under scrutiny for using steroids and other cheating tactics, which is why he implied the athlete was really a guy.
You have to remember about Norm "embracing technology". When Norm grew up the phone lines were hard wired. they didn't go out of service, the batteries didn't die, or the screen wouldn't be crack or black and unable to be seen. When he used technology it either worked, or it didn't work, and the reason and the solution it didnt work was obvious to see and address. The parts didn't need to be compatible, there was no memory or technological advancement requirements, and there were no virus or malwares. It worked, or it didn't work, and the reasons were blatant and didnt require an IT professional to assess it.
As a super fan of Norm. I have watches all these clips over and over. It is fun to watch your reactions and watch you begin to learn more about him. Have a beautiful day.
"How does he know she was from East Germany?" - I'm guessing Norm was talking about a time before the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, when East Germany was its own separate country.
Norm MacDonald died after a 10 year bout with cancer. Most of us didn't know till he died. I respect that about Norm MacDonald. Norm keeping it a secret from us. I say whatever the hell I want. If I don't say a word, it's not bc of snowflakes. It's bc I choose not to.
In my opinion, the Holy Grail of Norm moments is when he told his "Dirty Johnny" joke to Stephen Merchant... it's unlike anything else. If you can react to that, you will not regret it.
Still one of my favorite comics. Keeps me on my toes. Looking to see where he's going with a joke. Great love, and admiration between him and Letterman.
Norm has a sharp tongue and a sharp wit. I would not want him to roast me. Norm had a special place in his heart for Orenthal. Norm was friends with Kato Kaelin. He would insert Orenthal jokes into many of his SNL News updates. I believe he was talking about "Lost" with Jimmy Kimmel - and that was a real deal. There were chat groups dedicated to uncovering easter eggs and trying to figure out what was going on in the show. I feel like binge-watching doesn't give you time to appreciate all the little things in each episode. "9 1/2 Weeks" was a SCANDALOUS movie with Mickey Rourke and peak-hotness Kim Basinger. Norm was well-read in current events and politics, and worked it into his stuff.
I’m 65 and have experienced a lifetime of “delayed gratification.” I gave that up for Lent a few years ago. 😂 I’m with you, Britt. If I can’t binge every season of a show, I’m not watching.
At the height of his SNL fame he was on a comedy tour in Iowa. Check out what he said at this "family fare" show. 80 % of the crowd walked out and the governor kicked him out of the state.
His weight gain was from his severe medical treatments he was secretly undergoing to fight his terminal illness. He didn't let anyone know he was dying.
Norm graduated high school at 16 but always said he flunked out. He won $500,000 on Celebrity Who Wants to be a Millionaire. He had the right answer for final answer but Regis convinced him to take the $500,000 and walk away.
Norm became a favorite guest on the David Letterman Show and continued until Dave retired. There's very funny videos of those shows that are as good as Conan's.
In my early 40’s now, i remember growing up having to watch a show week to week, now being able to watch series on Netflix, etc and being able to binge watch a show back to back, i lovei t. Rather go do that.
Norm participated in an actual Roast (of his good friend Bob Saget). If you can find the video, it is epic. Good idea to read up on the background of how and why Norm prepared for the roast the way he did. Only Norm could do what he did that night. The ending is beautiful. This is Saget explaining it: ua-cam.com/video/LwPEXIazi2Y/v-deo.html
We actually had Carrot Top on our show this week. So funny! He's still performing in Vegas and is hanging out at all of the Super Bowl stuff right now.
Carrot Top is actually one of the richest comics in the world now. He's been performing a residency in his own room in Vegas for like 20 years. He's like a billionaire lol
20 years of selling out 8 shows a week in Vegas, in your own theatre is one of the biggest runs in history... yeah he's pretty close if not all the way@@timcarr6401
Each has their advantages. I loved having time to chat about each episode with family, friends, and coworkers and speculate what would happen next week before binging shows became a thing, but it's also nice to be able to go immediately from one episode to the next and not have to wonder what will happen (especially since I often think of really cool stuff I'd like to see and then it's a disappointment what actually happens, lol). But I do miss the camaraderie of being able to discuss shows in real time with other people when no one knows what is going to happen next. :) Norm's a funny guy! X)
This video is as good as any other I've seen of you (mostly Carlin and Norm). Wow are you beautiful. Mesmerizing. Great personality to boot. Those eyes melt me.
Norm is an absolute legend. You'd have tk watch his early stand up and SNL weekend update and skits. His guest spots on conan and letterman are hilarious
Hidden gem, "Norm MacDonald gift basket." It's Conan O'Brien being roasted probably the hardest he ever has been in his whole career, and he dies laughing.
Aww sucks you missed Conan’s setup to norms “chairman of the b-o-r-e-d” joke. He said “do something with that you creep” and it made it so much funnier when he did
This show was an EYE OPENER for me. I watched this w my family and i remember taking very different points from it then them. Lol. Archie Bunker was an AMAZING CHARICTER with a crazy arch. Your righy this man is just stuck in his ways and he speaks his mind. No matter how narrow minded he is somehow he makes the right choices when it comes down to it.
Norm was tech savvy. He intimated to both David Letterman and Larry King that he never tried to act smarter than the audience. Norm was regularly a step ahead of everyone. He also was the epitome the old saying "If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space."
no human being has ever made me laugh harder. he was incredibly well read. he was absolutely not afraid to go there and if you watch his final appearance on david letterman, you will see he had heart. i miss that guy so much. only time other than prince that i cried at a celebrity's death
The edited video here doesn't show Norm complimenting Courtney after he made the box office poison joke. She did an interview after Norm passed away and said she took it all in good fun and had no problem with it, she's pretty cool.
Norm got fired from SNL because he refused to stop doing OJ jokes. There’s a compilation of them that’s like a half hour long. Courtney Thorne-Smith’s said she did in fact love this segment because she didn’t have anything positive to say about the movie.

Norm was so impressed with Courtney being such a good sport on _Conan_ that he hired her to guest-star on an episode of his TV show, _The Norm Show_ .
He played Norm.
That OJ joke at the Espys is legendary. 🤣
That moment would be a highlight in any comedian's career! Incredible moment in time caught on camera.
Woodson won the Heisman, so it had to be '97. One year after the big verdict.

He wasn't a retard either.
Norm was a very intelligent dude who was so good at playing the fool that he could catch everyone off guard with how quick witted he was, his comedic timing was perfect.
Playing the bumbling old guy was Norm's thing but all the comics who were close to him said there was no one smarter or more well-read.
Yep Letterman gave him great advice early in his career." No one likes a smart guy, play the dumb guy, everybody loves the dumb guy."
This showcases one thing I love about Norm: he deliberately used extremely tame "roasts", and ones that he knew wouldn't "land" as this was so much more funny. The sheer awkwardness was something to behold. You can tell why he loved The Office (original version) so much.
Carrot Top has a permanent stage act in one of the Vegas Casinos. After Norm died, he played the Conan interview for his audience as a tribute.
Is there a clip of it on UA-cam
Norm genuinely enjoyed "bombing" and making the audience uncomfortable. He'd then come off stage and ask someone "How was that? That went great, right?" with a huge grin on his face. His clips on The View are awesome.
I've seen other comedians say that when he bombed he would stand at the exit and shake everyone's hand from the crowd just to troll them.

Norm participated in an actual Roast (of his good friend Bob Saget). If you can find the video, it is epic. Good idea to read up on the background of how and why Norm prepared for the roast the way he did. Only Norm could do what he did that night.
The ending is beautiful.
This is Saget explaining it:

We actually had Carrot Top on our show this week. So funny! He's still performing in Vegas and is hanging out at all of the Super Bowl stuff right now.
Ive watched tons of Norm over the years, and i could never tell if he was actually a grumpy old man, or was just playing a grumpy old man😂
Carrot Top is actually one of the richest comics in the world now. He's been performing a residency in his own room in Vegas for like 20 years. He's like a billionaire lol
Like a billionaire?
20 years of selling out 8 shows a week in Vegas, in your own theatre is one of the biggest runs in history... yeah he's pretty close if not all the way@@timcarr6401
Britt, you need to react to Norm on Conan's show telling his joke about his French Canadian uncle first trip to NYC.
Yes! I haven’t heard that one in awhile. 😆
I’m so grateful I got to meet him at work before he passed. I almost called him Turd Fergeson. He is missed
He said “do something with that you creep” and it made it so much funnier when he did
I binged seasons 1-3 of Game of Thrones and then finished it as it aired weekly. It was pure torture!
good job with this reaction. Norm is the best and I'm glad you like him and appreciate his wit.
You need to watch his appearances on the Dennis Miller show. Classic Norm.
"Who plays golf"
You should listen to Robin Williams' stand up about the origins of golf. it's hilarious.
Norms blue card jokes are a must!
12:55 you singing “come and knock on my door… 🎶 “ was a total jinx moment lol
The Odd Company, Newlyweds, and Cheers used to be on every night in NY! Used to love those shows as a kid
4:07 he didn’t even drive ! He would just arrange rides everywhere 😂
He’s one of a kind that’s for sure
You MUST watch Norm destroy O.J Simpson (btw, the kill your wife and a waiter, was an O.J Simpson reference). He's destroying him in so many ways...
I love that as soon as she said "Chairman of the board" he starts laughing to himself because he already had a joke.
