Dave admired and knew the genius of Norm.
Norm was making OJ jokes, Don Ulmyer president of NBC was good friends with OJ, he asked Norm to stop, Norm kept making OJ jokes, Norm got fired
This really is what it ultimately came down to. Norm wasnt big on conforming when it came to comedy. If something was funny to him, or he wanted to do something.... he was gonna do it regardless if no on else on the planet thought it was funny. Thing is, a lot of people still found most of his stuff funny so its not like he was Andy Kaufman level obtuse with his humor. But he was still edgy enough that the corporate side of things didnt like him much. Crazy to think that he almost lost his entire career over some OJ jokes. lmao
@@HerculesOfHate I always to myself made the comparison of Norm and Andy Kaufman, 200% agree
He didn't just keep making OJ jokes, he started making them *more*
Ohlmeyer. . .
@@christoffesedao3579 who cares, he fired Norm
“Well, it is finally official Murder is legal in the state of California.” 😂
That was the best one MacDonald said- I laughed for days when he said that. I still laugh about it when I think about it.
Dave's first show was on NBC and Don Ohlmeyer was around during his time at NBC, including when Dave got passed over for the Tonight Show and moved to CBS. So Dave knew all about Don and had no problem calling him an idiot.
Yes, Dave started late night with David Letterman and did the show for 10 years. When Jonnhy Carson retired NBC gave the tonight show to Jay Leno. So CBS gave Dave a show competing with the tonight show. Hence him telling Norm to come over to CBS.
Facts
Letterman was Norm's comedy hero. And Letterman really thought that Norm was one of the funniest guys alive.
Letterman was not wrong.
Which he was
Didn't Letterman say he wouldn't do his final episode unless Norm was one of his guests? Maybe I'm thinking of something else, but I believe that's true.
Letterman LOVED Norm, and his going off on Don Olmeyer so hard was his way of "putting Norm over" to his audience.
Dave once said "There are other people who may be as funny as Norm but there is no one funnier."
Norm MacDonald was not the original anchorman of SNL (that would have been Chevy Chase back in the 1970s). But Norm was one of the best, if not the best anchorman!
He was the best, enough with this "one of" the best stuff. He was the absolute best.
Dennis Miller was amazing. Norm and Dennis were fantastic just 2 different styles. And they both liked each other.
Ooo that'll be a fun video to watch. Chevy Chase Weekend Update reactions
Norm and Colin Quinn were always my favorite anchors.
After Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtain did the news together. They were pretty good too and always on the opposite sides of a topic. Whenever Aykroyd disagreed with Jane he would say "Jane you ignorant slut".
Norm and Dave had a great on-screen relationship. Dave really comes out of his shell when he is talking with people he respects. Norm's final Late Show appearance before Dave retired is worth a watch and is quite touching.
There’s also a Netflix special where Letterman, Spade, ‘O Brian, Chappelle, and Sandler chat about Norm. Very touching.
You should watch Norm's last appearance on the Letterman Show. David Letterman was Norm's comedy hero, and Norm gets really emotional.
This!
Norm knew he had cancer at the time, he kept it a secret, and it would be his last stand up on Letterman. It's so heart wrenching
💯
yeah, watching it years later realizing that he's been sick for so long really hit me deep. I watched his youtube show and all that, wondering man he really let himself go--and this hits you@@bellac1451
You spoiled it.
Chevy Chase was the original anchor on SNL. His catch phrase was, "Hello, I'm Chevy Chase... And you're not."
But Norm definitely made it his own.
They told him they were firing them for not being funny, but really they didnt like his OJ jokes
Yes, because Ohlmeyer was a good friend of O.J. Simpson from his days as the original producer of Monday Night Football.
Like Norm, Letterman used to work for NBC before switching over to CBS. He probably knew that NBC exec very well. 🤣
Yea if you look up the whole Conan and Leno fiasco at NBC, letterman stepped in several times to back Conan and admonish NBC execs for their handling of the situation.
And that was on the heels of letterman and lenos rivalry
This is why Norm was so emotional when it came to Letterman, imagine your idol growing up just heaping praise on you and genuinely furious that you got fired and going to bat for you.
Really heartwarming.
Oh, Norm 🥰 We'll never see another one like him.
R.I.P. 💔
The guy who fired Norm was a real Quesling.
Don Ohlmeyer was President of NBC and a golfing buddy of OJ Simpson's. He didn't like the OJ jokes, especially after the trial was over and reportedly told Lorne Michaels on multiple occassions that he wanted MacDonald to knock it off.
That apparently didn't sit well with MacDonald, so he doubled down on them knowing it would piss Ohlmeyer off.
Ultimately, Ohlmeyer had him fired from SNL...which was a big mistake.
If you look up Ohlmeyer today, it's one of the few things he's famous for. That's not a great legacy.
Still, Norm MacDonald's "don't give a damn" attitude did get him fired from SNL.
Thanks for spelling Don Ohlmeyer correctly. For the most part it isn't critical, but my obsessive compulsive eyes were getting tired of seeing his name misspelled in a large number of comments.
@@jacksonbelow6882 I had to look it up, so I can't really fault anyone else for misspelling it. I've actually seen news articles referring to him as "Don Obermeyer." Now, I WOULD expect those guys to look it up and get it right, far more than I would someone posting on the fly.
Murder! Legal in the state of California
-norm Macdonald
Yes indeed. Taking a few seconds to be sure of yourself before speaking is an admirable quality that I'd like to see more of.
Don Ohlmeyer wasn’t the President of NBC because the President overruled Ohlmeyer when he tried banning his ads.
Quisling (/ˈkwɪzlɪŋ/, Norwegian: [ˈkvɪ̂slɪŋ]) is a term used in Scandinavian languages and in English to mean a citizen or politician of an occupied country who collaborates with an enemy occupying force - or more generally as a synonym for traitor or collaborator.[1][2][3] The word originates from the surname of the Norwegian war-time leader Vidkun Quisling, who headed a domestic Nazi collaborationist regime during World War II.
Thank you for saving me a lot of typing!
Imagine your name becoming the perfect lower case noun for a traitorous Nazi collaborator.
Norm was talking about what got him into comedy, he said his biggest goal, was to get on David Letterman, because he idolized him.
Not only did he get on Letterman, Dave loved Norm so much, he picked him to be his last Stand-up guest on his final show.
And I believe he is the one that got Norm set up with his podcast and was the producer or executive producer behind the scenes.
Yes, Britt, it was that very day that Norm was fired from Weekend Update.
The guy who fired Norm was a good friend of OJ Simpson.
Letterman had also been fired from NBC in favor of Jay Leno, and years later Conan O’Brien was also fired from NBC in favor of Jay Leno.
Letterman controlled his exit from NBC. He wasn’t fired, he quit his NBC show after he got passed over for the Tonight Show and went to CBS to start a new show opposite the Tonight Show.
You're right. Conan wasn't technically fired either, but when a company slaps you in the face like that, they know you're not coming back.
"Heyya, did ya have turkey for the thing there?" Norm making small talk 😂
Letterman once said of Don Ohlmeyer that "he thinks of himself as creative.....that's a guy who couldn't produce gas after a bean dinner".
Norm was actually very good in sketches and was an excellent impressionist.
Norm’s reply was l have firsthand experience that this isn’t true. That was an old Johnny Carson joke.
I wish I could enjoy the Norm rabbit hole again for the first time. At least I can live it through you.
Weekend Update is the only SNL sketch that has been consistently on for all 49 seasons.
Him playing Burt Reynolds on that sketch was funny as hell.
Norm Macdonald is the Greatest Late Night Comedy Talk Show Guest who ever lived. He has many dozens of hours on Letterman, Conan, and Leno. Many of his "stories" belong on the Highlight-Reel of Human Excellence. He was a mischief-maker, always trying to surprise his conversation partners, and he was the best at his craft. Rest in Peace Norm Macdonald...! Extemporaneous badinage, and poetic-cadence.
Norms Last Apperence on Letterman is a great watch
Inducting Norm into the PDC made my day. I actually thought about it 5-6 days ago. You’re amazing for doing this. 🙏
Yup, Letterman was a guest on Norm's podcast many years later. A good tear jerker reaction would be to do Norm's final stand up on the Letterman show, it's on UA-cam, I don't want to spoil it, but just watch it. All I'll say is that Norm knew he had cancer at the time, which he kept a secret.
Norm did stand up on Letterman when he was a very young man, and maintained a very good close friendship with David Letterman who was one of his biggest allies.
Millie Vanilli put out a couple of hits then they got busted for lip syncing when the recording skipped in concert.. Everyone learned they couldn't sing a note. There's a another interview where Norm returns a month later and they pick up from where they left off. I should be in the PDC for all this useful information you can carry with you through life :D
Also major note, only group or act to have their Grammy Award revoked.
Reminds me of that Simpson girl who got busted for lip syncing on SNL.
I love that you added him to the PDC. I’ve always thought there was something attractive about him and he was one of the funniest comedians ever. Best Weekend Update anchor.
This showed Norm’s character. A true class act. RIP the 🐐
7:45 The word quisling refers to Vidkun Quisling, who become head of the Norwegian government in April 1940, after the German invasion and conquest of Norway. After the WWII Norway found him guilty of war crimes and sentenced him to death by firing squad on October 24, 1945.
I’m so happy u like Norm! If u want to hear Norm tell a long, hilarious story, check out Norm telling Dave the Scrabble Story. Classic Norm!
Norm is the funniest comedian in my book. It’s never about the destination but the journey
It was the O.J. Jokes.
My favorite comedian. I’ll never stop watching his UA-cam clips.
I love how you read Dav's body language, "He's an idiot." I honestly never picked up on how serious he was.
This was a momentous 24 hours in comedy. Norm was publicly fired from Update in the morning, appeared on Letterman the same night, and then did the Howard Stern Show in the morning, and brought his friend Artie Lange with him, in an attempt to deflect further questions about his firing. The Stern crew fell in love with Artie, who went on to be hired there and became the only true co-host besides Robin in the show's long history.
There are many good Norm clips from his Stern appearances over the years, but a particularly good one to react to would be his 7-minute Dirty Johnny Joke
Weekend Update on SNL started during season 1 in 1975 ... with Chevy Chase. There were many, many single and duo comedian versions of WU through the years.
I don't know if you've seen the clips of him on Dennis Miller, but those are a MUST!
I'm sure countless people have suggested it - and apologies if you've already reacted to it - but Norm's appearance on Letterman 's final show was very funny and very moving. Like an unexpected emotional gut punch tbh, that to me was the ultimate evidence that Norm was a "real one" in a world of phoneyness in American TV.
Hahaha, the shot about Chris Kattan. Norm is the master at playing the rube.
Norm MacDonald did due very good impression of Talk Show David Letterman. It's great & the guy impersonating Paul Schafer was also good.
Dave did a great job. Miss good late-night. Norm is a personality that can't be duplicated. Ty for this reaction.
He was totally making a meta-joke with his 'quizmaster' question.
Olmeyer was buddies with OJ. Norm was warned to quit doing the OJ jokes. Norm kept doing them and was fired.
Letterman was a producer who produced a little show called Everybody Loves Raymond and the Late Late Show that followed him. That show stared Craig Ferguson for 10 yrs.
Chevy chase, Dennis Miller, and Kevin Nielon were Norms predessor's of the weekend update.
And Bill Murray/Jane Curtin
And Dan Akroyd.
Not to mention Charles Rocket, who did it during the infamous worst season when Jean Doumanian took over as producer. He later committed suicide.
Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtain did Weekend Update after Chevy.
Dan's catchphrase was always "Jane you ignorant slut!"
Fun fact. When norm ran his podcast he would make fun of all the sponsors to the point nobody wanted to do business with him anymore. 😂 what a legend.
Chevy Chase was the original Weekend Update anchor host. Good times! Dan Akroyd and Jane Curtain were hilarious.
Norm MacDonald was one of the funniest men ever!
Totally refreshing to see a woman who has a sense of humor. God bless very rare these days. Too many gals don't have no sense of humor.
Dave Letterman was fired from NBC too!
It was this appearance that Cosby discovered Norm's father was dead. BTW: You put a smile on Norm's face (even though he's in heaven). RIP Norm Macdonald.
In that previous clip you watched of that Bill Cosby story, he mentions that Bill Cosby watched this interview with Letterman and finally found out his father had passed. And then he sent Norm a bunch of flowers and a card.
Oh, and Britt, what you're also seeing is the power that David Letterman had. Don't want to say power, in that sense, but in how absolutely true he was. Dave was hilarious, crazy, wild, unbelieveably funny...but was also incredibly intelliegent, sharp, smart and cutting edge.
Britt, when you spoke of your PDC thingie I was reminded that here in Canada the liquor stores have for decades sold a very inexpensive product called 'Gilbey's Lemon Collins' that is lemon-flavoured gin. By being really cheap, too easy to drink, and popular with the young ladies who can't afford more expensive booze, it is colloquially known as "panty remover" or "panty dropper" by the young men.
So love Norm.
Best Cosby impression. In speaking not the other thing
That PDC bit had me cracking up 😂
Both Letterman and Norm's chosen persona was to play the fool. That's why they got along so well. They were both extremely intelligent and tried to out "fool" each other by not showing how smart they were.
Norm is a 🐐 and is rightfully placed in the PDC. R.I.P. Legend.
Something similar happened to Sam Kinison. He was a guest comedian with just a few minutes of stand-up at the end of the show. He was told not to do certain jokes... he did them anyway. He was told he would never work this town again (New York City). Was called back within a year to host the show.
One of the things I really love about Norm is his fairness. Didn't have a vindictive bone in his body.
Norm new exactly what quisling meant and he knew Dave was using it wrong. He just knew pretending to be confused was funnier, and more polite for that matter, then correcting him. The dictionary was just a great prop to really drive the joke home.
Norm is the king of understatement.
Watching old episodes of The Norm Show, yesterday, because I miss him, and all of sudden I see Richard Pryor. It was the last thing he was in, in a wheelchair, barely able to speak...mischievous gleam in his eye completely untarnished. Jeez, I almost lost my shit.
Norm was also great when he was on Dennis Miller Live. In fact, he's in the Millennium Special as "Our favorite guest"!
Letterman and Norm had a lot of mutual respect. They always spoke very highly of each other. Letterman invited Norm to his show many times, and actually for the very last Letterman show he invited Norm to be the last guest. After Letterman retired Norm invited him to his podcast, I think a couple of times. I also saw a video of Letterman doing an homage to Norm after he passed away by doing a joke question as an audience member during a press conference in a sporting event (IIRC), imitating one Norm had done before.
You need to check out Norms last standup on David Letterman show. It's pretty emotional. Love your reactions keep up the good work.
Norm was such a cutie ❤ His many appearances on David Letterman are so wonderful. Worth checking more of them out.
Dave is often on his former producer's UA-cam channel. I think it has Letterman in the name. He's his old Dave self on that channel. I was a David Letterman fan so it's great to see him clown around again on UA-cam.
I hadn't realized Norm was so tall - Letterman is tall, and Norm was taller. Welcome to the world of corporate media! "Between you and me" on national TV - loved it. Quisling is a good word - it basically means "collaborator". I'd be surprised if Norm actually didn't know what it meant. Letterman enjoyed sticking it to NBC when he could. It would've been nice if Ulmyer had hired OJ Simpson to host weekend update. As for the PDC - ladies love a funny man - go for it! Milli Vanilli had a couple hits, then word came out that they didn't actually sing any of their songs.
I can't be sure, but Norm was a lot smarter than he let on and I am pretty sure he knew exactly who Quisling was and was just being funny. He was always coming out with historical facts especially about WW 2
Yeah, the dumb stuff was an act 100%
Absolutely. He put a lot of time and work into looking like he puts no time and work in. Listen to other comedians talk about him, they found him frighteningly intelligent.
Norm was very smart. His run on who wants to be a millionaire should be evidence enough of that... but I don't think not knowing quisling was an act. It's not a common word. Contrary to what shows like Scorpion would have us believe, being intelligent does not mean you know every piece of knowledge.
@@dannykent6190 yeah, I get your point but tbh Quisling is very much within his wheelhouse. Never know for sure, but in that pretending to be dim/ignorant is a major part of his comedy…especially in interview/conversation type settings, I’d just say that his saying he didn’t know…to the point of getting out a dictionary…well, at the very least I’ll say it doesn’t tell us anything about whether he knew or not. He LOVED words, he loved playing with them, their sound, the difference inflection and pace has on their effect, etc. He had a White Whale thing, spent years trying to find what in his mind was the pinnacle of comedy; a joke where the set up and punchline are exactly the same sentence. So there is no way of knowing why he was saying he didn’t know.
@@dannykent6190 I agree because I don't know what the @#$% scorpion is beside a bug I don't want to sting me. Contrary to that though, it is hard to know a lot about WW2 and Norm did, and not know Quisling. But I did add the caveat "I can't be sure..."
You should react to a compilation of norm constantly roasting oj that was what got him fired from snl
I had no idea people used Quisling as a slang for traitor outside Norwegian borders 😂
Great Video. They say that the firing came from the fact that OJ Simpson & the guy that got Norm MacDonald fired were good friends & he didn't like all of The OJ Simpson Jokes on Weekend Update.
It did happen that day. He wasn’t fired from SNL, he was fired from doing the Weekend Update for crapping on OJ
Dave was at NBC then moved to CBS after not getting the Tonight Show after Carson left.
Dave couldn’t do a few of his signature segments from NBC due to copyright right infringement.
Letterman gave Norm his break, which is why his final ever stand up was on letterman, which actually ended in real tears.. You should react to that
It wasn't Norm's final standup. It was on one of the final episodes of Letterman. Letterman wanted his favorites and heroes for his final guests. That's why it was Norm and Bob Dylan on that episode.
It was discovered that Milli Vanilli (a supposed musical group) was actually lip syncing to songs by Studio Musicians.
Norm MacDonald is my favourite comedian.
Letterman was an absolute savage about NBC's management during his last year or so there. Virtually everyone expected him to take over The Tonight Show when Johnny Carson retired; he'd been groomed for the position for years, often acting as guest host when Carson took nights off. So it was a shock to everyone when NBC screwed Dave over and gave the show to Leno.
Dave's bitterness really showed through in his last year there, he was basically daring NBC to fire him. When he finally started at CBS, his bitterness disappeared and he was back to his adorable, curmudgeonly self.
So yeah, he was dead serious when he was trash-talking NBC brass here, there wasn't a drop of love lost between them.
I love how much you love Norm!
the first ever news anchor on snl actually was chevy chase. there were alot of different ones since then, but chevy has said that norm was the only one who did it right
Letterman and Norm had a special relationship - it's like Dave cared more about him getting fired than he did
Gotta watch Norms standup on Lettermans' last episode. It's emotional.
Don Olmeyer was best friends with OJ. He had told Norm no more OJ jokes. So Norm just doubled down on more OJ jokes. And Norm started in on OJ early on in the trial when others were too afraid to take a side.
Great observation Britt
9:15 Yeah he was a very good looking guy. I saw an interview of him from 1985 and he was very handsome.
9:46 The people who knew him personally said he was always smiling. In his podcast one guest called him the man of the perpetual smile or something like that.
She is so pretty, talented and clearly educated in music and vocal performance. This will be the only time I comment on this. I hope she always has a loving family and prosperous career
Agree. Sometimes she'll make a comment about the music that is actually pretty deep and on point. As a life long musician. I picked up on that....and she's funny too!
Personal note at the end. Norm is still one of the greats. Personal note. Your voice is delightful and you come through as a being of light and sincerity that seems so extraordinary and rare these days. I wish you all the happiness in this life because you have blessed me and thousands of others with making their days better. I hope you react to some old great non PC like Don Rickles or shows like “All in the Family”
More to the story is Norms OJ murder jokes. Week after week after week. Love Norm, Iconic.
Norm skewered OJ on Weekend Update and Don Ohlmeyer was very, very good friends with OJ
PRC ?? What a brilliant concept and if Norm were alive he would be honored. :))
Weeell..I guess you now have to react to Norm's farewell to Letterman (his last appearence). 😂😂😂
It makes me happy that she loves Norm so much. I don't know exactly why, it just does.
Ya gotta remember that Dave used to be on NBC and left upset with them
The guy who fired him was besties with oj, norm wouldnt stop his oj jokes as a legend would
Yes, Norm was only fired from the Weekend Update portion of the show, but that was the only part of the show that Norm was interested in doing, because it allowed him to write his own jokes. Norm took part in very few skits.
Lorne Michaels created "Weekend Update" as part of the original pitch for "Saturday Night Live." He originally intended to host "Update," himself. When the show premiered in 1975, the decision was made to go with Chevy Chase as the first "Update" anchor.
Few interesting facts about Norm that you may not know. He graduated high school at 14. He was off the charts intelligent but liked to present himself as otherwise. Two brothers, one was the lead foreign correspondent for the national news in Canada, the other was schizophrenic (may be me, but have know of a few people with schizophrenia that were off the charts brilliant)
