HiDef: The Next Chapter-Incredible R&N 2102 Freight Test Run!

On April 26th, 2022, The Reading and Northern Railroad operated a test train with their newly restored 4-8-4 "T-1" #2102, unassisted, accompanied by 50 empty coal hoppers and a caboose. The train ran from North Reading to Jim Thorpe, and then back to Tamaqua, where the coal hoppers were dropped off and the engine was turned, then towed back to Port Clinton with some diesel help due to the steam crew reaching their 12 hours on duty. To say this run was extraordinary would be an understatement. The 2102 put on quite the show pulling the coal hoppers up the grades of the R&N system. We'll chase almost the entire trip, minus the layover in Jim Thorpe and the diesel led run from Tamaqua back south. Stay tuned on this channel, as I will be heading back up to see the 2102 in action on its passenger runs this summer!

It’s crazy to think that these test runs are almost 25 years after 1361’s first test runs and how differently they are conducted. Totally different situations, but still interesting
