I actually prefer the hypothetical ending where Sullivan doesn't get killed. He just gets away with it. He just packs up and moves into a smaller apartment. Leaves the movie more dramatic and uneasy.

No he didn't. (and in fact, I don't think much of this performance at all, it was a total disappointment to me, and I had way higher expectations from both him and the movie). He had just done "About Schmidt" four years earlier, one of his best and most underrated performances, his last Oscar nomination if I remember rightly, and then he followed it up with a hit comedy, "Anger Management"......then he does this a couple of years later. You think people forgot Jack Nicholson was? He was also really great in a romantic comedy he did with Diane Keaton around this time, I can't remember the name, but that's the last really good Jack performance, although this one does have his indisputably last, decisively iconic line reading......"I"ve got this rat, this TEETHING, gnawing rat...." That's up there with "Here's Johnny" and the Carnal Knowledge monologue and all the rest of it.

As others have commented, this is based on the Hong Kong film "Internal Affairs." However it is also based on one of the worst law enforcement scandals in American history, the Whitey Bulger investigation. Bulger ran the Winter Hill Mob, the biggest gang in Boston, and literally everyone knew it. His huge slate of murders, extortion, drug selling, etc., etc., etc. was common knowledge. There was more than enough evidence to convict him a hundred times over, and the fact that he wasn't arrested was an ongoing scandal in Boston for years. It turned out he was an FBI informant the whole time, and the FBI not only shielded him from consequences, but abetted his crimes. When the noose finally tightened, an FBI agent tipped Bulger off to allow him to flee and remain at large for years more. The FBI agent in question had been nurtured by Bulger since he was a child, guided him through the police and FBI academies, and Bulger benefited from the man's unswerving loyalty -- basically Matt Damon from this movie. American law enforcement has been involved in a LOT of corrupt, dirty things, but this was among the worst.

It's so crazy how Scorsese just naturally makes at LEAST one iconic classic each and every decade. I don't think The Departed measures up to the heights of his greatest work, but even "lesser" Scorsese is better than most filmmakers great movies.

I love Scorsese, but the fact he won an Oscar and gets all this praise for The Departed has always irked me as its a remake. He basically followed the same blueprint, made the same movie, and inserted an all-start cast of brilliant actors. I absolutely LOVE the tone of violence in Scorsese's movies. It feels cinematic while feeling real, it feels serious while maybe even being a tad funny (in some moments, not always). It is often clumsy, in the way that real violence usually is, and that just adds to the *impact*. And Schoonmaker's editing just adds to it even more.

Delahunt didn't say who the rat was because he didn't want Billy killed. He couldn't kill anyone, it just wasn't in him. It's more explained in a deleted scene but Scorsese wanted to leave it ambiguous. There's a UA-cam vid of the full clip and Scorsese saying as much.

What's really crazy is that a lot of this also actually happened, and the real story is batshit. If you lived anywhere near Boston in the early 2000s, you might've heard the name Whitey Bulger. He was an Irish crime boss with a brother in the state senate. He also had an old friend from the neighborhood as his FBI handler. In exchange for information about the mafia, Whitey's biggest competition, his handler officially provided him with FBI protection from prosecution as a federal informant, and unofficially provided him with sealed information on other gangs so he could corner pretty much every illegal market in Boston. He operated with impunity for over 30 years, and he was RUTHLESS.

Yeah, that's a crazy thing to say. As soon as you enter into a relationship you obviously owe each other a lot of things, including being honest and faithful for as long as you are a couple. But there's a general pattern in society where women are not supposed to owe men anything, that's misogyny, whereas men, of course, owe women everything that's demanded of them. In light of that sentiment, Arianna's comment makes perfect sense.

I am sure your state police are doing that. You think of them as highway patrol and ticket writers because that is what is at the forefront and most newly graduated troopers have to serve in patrol for the first few years of their career. State police agencies always have some specialized divisions. Detectives, task forces, gang units, counter terrorism and swat teams.

I’d highly recommend watching Infernal Affairs, the Cantonese film The Departed was based on. It has the same basic structure, but the tone, style, and thematic conclusions are extremely different. Incredible film in its own right. The Departed is one of my favorite films ever, but I’d have to give it a rewatch to see which one I truly prefer.

So that final 15-20 minutes of the movie were absolutely insane lol. Matt Damon's character shoots his partner because at the moment he thought that was the only one left alive that knew what he really was and he was trying to get out from under the paranoia of the trouble he was looking at. He just didn't believe ol girl had more info on him than the recordings she heard, and he had no clue she had instructions to go find dignam. Dignam had quit the police force so he couldn't actually arrest Sullivan, plus he wanted that man dead cause he was responsible for the captain dying so that's why he shot him at the very end.

The comment about the bad screenplay shows they don’t know the real life story of Whitey Bulger whose role was played by Jack with names changed of course. Scorcese took the original film Infernal Affairs and superimposed over the Gang world in Boston making relevant changes and developing the interwoven storylines. It’s actually a brilliantly done adaptation and excellent screenplay.

One interpretation is that Sullivan is gay (and closeted, obviously). This would explain his impotence, the assumptions of the real estate guy, and some of his awkwardness "locker room talking" with the other cops. It also casts a different light on Frank meeting him in the porno theater (is Frank aware?), and adds still another level of deception about identity.

    • @TheLegendOfOblivion
