Bill the Butcher is easily one of the best villains on screen. Competent, brutal, but compassionate in his own way.

Daniel Day-Lewis always remained in character. There’s a story about how Liam Neeson would work out at the gym early in the morning each day before filming. Day-Lewis arrived at the gym later and would greet him every day by saying, “Good Morning, Priest,” always with the full New-York accent.

The fact I heard this so menacingly in my head, then picturing Liam's reaction is killing me

It’s an interesting movie. “The blood stays on the blade” is a metaphor for one cannot wash away their sins-the wicked deeds you’ve caused will come back to haunt you as it has with Butcher Bill-and yet the city of New York is shown to forget everything entirely.
The gangs of New York helped shaped the future, and that future abandoned them quicker than night turned to day.

This has been one of my favorite films since it came out purely for Daniel Day Lewis’ performance. He truly became Bill the butcher and absolutely steals every scene. It’s such a raw and gritty aesthetic with incredible writing and costumes. Just a fun film!

I don't know what it is about Anderson films. I just never really feel them. The directing, filming, acting...all excellent. And I do like the little vignettes within the films, just not as a whole. I see the quality, yet they just don't resonate for me... I really want to see Licorice Pizza though... I may need to revisit these films.... I do have a good understanding on why Magnolia and Punch Drunk Love don't work for me... I like parts of them, just now the whole.... There will Be Blood is more confounding for me. On paper it should hit on all cylinders. I just...uhh...well I don't care about any of the characters... It's been a while I think I'll watch it again.....

17:51 The whole monologue about fear, “the spectacle of fearsome acts” from DDL, while wrapped in an American flag, is one of my favorite moments of a film. “Civilization is crumbling.”

That whole neighborhood of Five Points is now a Park (Columbus Park), Chinatown and the NYC Court Houses. The gangs really did rule the streets...and the Draft Riots were insanely bloody. The last frame of the movie has the World Trade Center as part of the skyline.

    • @methodhardie9193

I believe there was some controversy too, there were requests before the film released to remove the WTC from the skyline at the end, Scorcese wanted it kept in, rightfully so as it's an integral part of New York's history, same as the events depicted in the movie.

I first watched this movie during my first semester of college as part of an assignment for my history course, I had to write an essay on its depiction of the New York riots and gang wars of the time.
It turned out to be one of the movies that finally clicked something in my head and started me down a path of learning more about and appreciating cinema as an art form. This was the beginning for me.

The book (published in 1928) is worth reading too. It's more like an encyclopedia of the gangs at different points in the history of New York, so the story in the movie is original. The book provided the background.

Shutter Island and Gangs of New York are two Scorsese/Leo movies that any reactor should watch. I love how much you appreciate shots and have to ask, wouldn't a Peaky Blinders film be so interesting under the direction of Martin Scorsese? What a collaboration that would be. Cillian's eyes telling as much of the story as Martin's direction. Great reaction Arianna

Daniel Day Lewis's character was based on the real life "William Poole" AKA "Bill The Butcher" (1821-1855), who was the leader of the Bowery Boys Gang and the "Know Nothing" political movement in NYC. He was also a part -time butcher, fireman, and bare -knuckles brawler/street fighter. He was assassinated by a rival gang leader in a bar. His last words were, "Well boys, I die a true American."

and Lincoln. Daniel-day Lewis is no joke. He retired now but he was very selective he was very selective in the roles he accepted. He would wait five years in-between projects for the right role. he is a hardcore method actor to the extreme and nobody has more best actor Oscars than he does even though he does way fewer films than most big name actors do. The guy is a generational talent.

Better then fine to be truthful (LotM is a little schmaltzy, but enjoyable). But, if you are gonna watch something, check out The Unbearable Lightness Of Being. The true lesson from the end of this film:
There is no gang more powerful, more ruthless, and more self-serving ... than the political class
They will use whatever factions will advance their own agendas, drop them at a moment's notice if political winds change, and will willingly send them to the slaughter without a second thought (even the economic elite who thought themselves untouchable as well)
And so long as they have the lower factions constantly at each other's throats, they will continue to sit high above and orchestrate everyone else's demise

@@paulstirling3261 - They did that to the economic elites (like I mentioned), not the political class
The political class (best embodied by Tammany and his cronies) sided with Butcher and the Natives ... until it became more beneficial to switch to Vallon and the Immigrants ... until it became more beneficial to wait and see how comes out on top of their war ... until it became most beneficial to just use the military to put them both down
And then the film ends with Tammany telling his team to get everything ready because there were more Immigrants about to be getting off the boat for them to use for their means - aka NYC was just razed to the ground, but like Vallon said nobody will remember any of them or the things they did because it's already 'back to normal' for the political class as the machine keeps rolling on and building their power by rebuilding the city on top of the ruins
