THE BAPTISM OF FIRE: THE 1848-49 CAMPAIGN
The war of 1848 was an opportunity for the newborn specialty to demonstrate its aptitude for combat. On 3/8/1848, the 1st Company of the 2nd Battalion, commanded by Captain Lions, came into contact near Goito with an Austrian detachment. As soon as he was informed of the episode, La Marmora, who had become a colonel, ran to the Bersaglieri and divided them into two groups. The imperials abandoned the camp and retreated over the Mincio, blowing up the bridge. A thin parapet remained intact and was naturally beaten by the enemy guns and artillery. La Marmora was wounded in the jaw and fell from his horse. Lieutenant Galli della Mantica was killed. All of a sudden the Bersagliere Guastoni jumped across the clearing and threw himself on the parapet shouting: Long live 11 Re! Come on everyone! Captain Griffino caught up with him and, passing him, passed on the parapet followed by many plumed foot soldiers. The bridge was overcome and the shore conquered.
For this action, Captain Griffino was awarded the Gold Medal for Military Valor. Other actions were carried out by the Bersaglieri in Monzambano, Borghetto, Mantua, Villafranca, Pastrengo, Santa Lucia di Verona and Calmasino. For these actions the 1st company of the 1st battalion and the 2nd company of the 2nd deserved the Honorable Mention (subsequently Bronze Medal to the V.M.). But the glory of the bersaglieri continued in other battles: that of the Crown, where the 3rd company of the 10th battalion deserved an honorable mention, of Governolo, Ponti, Monte Torre, Valeggio, Novara. Unfortunately, the fate of the war was not positive for us, and the Vignale armistice signed on 03/26/1849 returned Lombardy to Austria. In addition to the aforementioned departments, the 9th of the 3rd battalion and the 14th of the 4th for the unfortunate battle of Novara, and the battalion volunteers Bersaglieri Valtellinesi (subsequently passed to 5th btg. Of new formation). In March 1849 the 10th Battalion was created.
