Trangia Multi-Fuel Burner - Explanation & Demonstration

- A quick video to show you the multifuel (/multi fuel) burner by trangia.
It is nearly identical to the Optimus Nova Multifuel burner, but with an addition to make it fit neatly into the Trangia unit.
I bought mine in 2011 for £115
Boils 1L of water in approximately 3 - 3.5 minutes
Total weight 440g
Note that this is NOT the "Trangia Multifuel X2", which comes with two different jets (one for white gas and petrol, another for paraffin and diesel) and a different attachment so it can fit on to a gas bottle as well as a standard liquid fuel bottle (basically an adapted Primus Omnifuel). The burner in the video is the Trangia Multifuel, which can not be used with gas.

I live in the US and what we have here are mostly JetBoil, Optimus, MSR, and Primus, white gas or isobutane canister stoves. I found a Trangia by accident on eBay about a year ago and after reading the ad, I ordered one, which gives me a total of 5 stoves. I have 2 JetBoils and a MSR than use isobutane, a small tin can alcohol burner, and now the Trangia. I have only prepared a couple of meals on it and the only complaint I had was how slow it was to cook anything. The addition of a white gas burner like the one you depict in this post should take care of any shortcomings I have with the Trangia. I will have the conversion unit before spring gets here, (April). It may be slightly slower but how could u not kick back an relax and enjoy the no noise of a stove or an aircraft jet making a bunch of noise while your out away in a peaceful place enjoying the sounds vs hearing a jet. But aside for the alcohol burner. Theirs this multi-fuel burner in the video an actually another made for canisters only. It has so many options
I have been mulling over the purchase of one of these for a while now and your excellent video has made up my mind (gonna get it!) I like the way that the entire set up can be easily removed from the 25 in seconds as opposed to some of the more tricky type options I have seen that require a lot more messing about. I see rikuk3 has contributed to the discussion as well. Rik is incredibly knowledgable on all things stove and a more helpful fella you couldn't wish to meet :)
This burner is made for Trangia by Primus. I bought the bowl shaped adapter as a spare part and adapted my old Primus burner. Not quite as convenient as the proper Trangia spec one but I saved nearly £200! I use it mainly with gas canisters anyway and the boiling time is quicker again plus you get proper control which you don't get with petrol burners. Good video.
is his trangia multi burner not their older version, and thus based on the nova/optimus and not the primus?

Nice video! A few years ago I put a KAP arctic stove together with a duossal pan set and an optimus 111t burner and a nova pump. It's a pretty impressive bit of gear.

11 years ago. Now I understand. You can't find this burner anywhere now. Best bet is to adapt an Optimus or Primus multi-fuel burner.
Good stove setup, use one myself with a Nova or Omnifuel burner. Burning paraffin you should pre heat with meths, priming with paraffin leads to a messy sooty burner. Burning Coleman fuel/naptha you can pre heat with it as it won't leave as much residue on the burner bell.

For me its more cold wet windy Wales. Common practise is to pack a small food tray to use like a big dish to rest the stove, prevents any fuel spillage getting onto clothes and sleeping bag etc.

Hi there, I`ve been using the primus omnifuel for quite some years now. A year ago, i tried to fit it in my trangia. Didn´t work so well so I decided to buy this one.
Warning!! For everyone who want´s to buy it: The one in this video is the old model!!
In the new model they left out the fine adjustment and therefore its totaly crap. almost don´t get to light it up without burning myself wheter on gas or fuel.
Well it just sucks. The old model in this video looks good though!
Good video! I made my own Trangia style multifuel stove. Maybe I buy that Trangia multifuel burner for it.
No, sadly the X2 doesn't have one. Also, I managed to source 4L of parrafin for £8 at a local irongmonger's. I just got using the X2 for the first time today. Regrettably, I'll have to send it back as there is a leak at the pump on the top of the fuel bottle. So annoying. but at least I discovered in plenty of time to have it rectified for the West Highland Way.
I may do a video once I get it working as it should, but your video's very comprehensive and I couldn't better it!

It IS the Optimus Nova. You can get a accessory from Trangia to fit a Nova you already have into a Trangia.
Benighted Bivvy makes a good point about the alcohol consumption of the Trangia spirit burner. How much alcohol did you take in order to pre-heat the multi-fuel burner? I have no idea of how big the well is where you put the liquid. I have never had a Nova.
I DO have two older Optimus stoves. If I were considering buying the complete Nova or the multi-fuel burner i'd be asking some serious questions about the quality given the likely purchase price.
Only having one jet is a compromise and these jets and those on the Nova seem to favour paraffin which is my choice of fuel to be honest, its less volatile and makes for safer cooking in a tent in winter.

In a survival situation many day in the woods this stove would start burning wood when you run out of propane and to how long will a bottle last to in a situation when the power goes out in a bad storm and its taking weeks on end to get the power back on ?

Hi. I ended up getting the "Multi Fuel Burner X2" (Product # 750001). I've still to source paraffin for it, so not used it yet. Mine doesn't have the quick-release for the bottle to the pipe.
How did you find it for needing cleaned when using paraffin? Does it regularly need cleaning? I've bought it for doing to West Highland Way next year and wanted something better than the Meths burner. Your video convinced me to get the Trangia Multi Fuel burner.
It cost £115 + P&P.

i do have a stove that can use white gas/coleman fuel, unleaded gasoline and kerosene, but i haven't used kerosine in it yet. i noticed in your video that the round pot/pan holder had black soot on the sides. is it because you were using kerosene? have you compared using your stove with whaite gas/coleman fuel too? i'm just curious because they say that using kerosene is a lot more smelly, produces a lot of soot and gets your stove more dirty hence more maintenance...

I have a question I have one of these stoves. All of a sudden it started to fire ball on me and wouldn't switch off it was like it was delayed. I used paraffin in the stove it's called a AGP stove

Is it possible to fit the Trangia bottle on other stoves like MSRs ? The Trangia pressure bottle looks very sturdy compared to the MSR's plastic pump.
It's probably an Optimus bottle with Trangia written on it.
It's an Optimus Nova stove after all.

Ok, you use parafin fuel, but what are the other fuels that can be used? Can you use regular car gasoline?
I could be wrong, I have no experience with gasoline or these stoves, but isn't gasoline thicker than diesel?
I wouldn't personally use anything thicker than petrol/kerosene
+N Martindale I was wrong, just watched another video & the chap says you can run it on diesel, rapeseed oil (canola I think you guys call it), gasoline, etc.
I run gas in mine with no issues
Gasoline and diesel are dirty fuels produced to power engines not stoves
It'll burn them but you'll regret it

Other than fuel savings, are there any other benefits if the multi-fuel system? Curious as i'm looking at buying a Trangia
The point of multi-fuel systems is that you can use them even in less developed countries where other fuels are not available.
Refueling the bottle you avoid more trash to your backpack (indeed for 1-2 weeks hikes) and the environment. Best
They are much more reliable than other fuels in really cold weather and at altitude
Care and ventilation are needed.
Coleman fuel is very expensive in the UK, but has dropped to £5 a litre.
Why are you priming a kerosene stove with kerosene?
It's cleaner to be use denatured alcohol.
I can buy coleman fuel 6 bucks a gallon..where do you live that it's so expensive?
Can't see the point in buying this conversion kit at the extortionate price. Better to get an Optimus Polaris or Primus Omifuel. The only real benefit I can see is that the Trangia windshield and pot supports would be very good in windy conditions. I have the Trangia (Primus) gas burner which with Winter fuel cartridges is effective to way colder than I would ever need to go. Yes, the fuel is more expensive but it is clean, quick, very controllable, and a lot less hassle to set up. Great video and respect your skills but white gas/fuel stoves are not for me.
i take your point Ian, but i believe trangia sell the burner cup needed to adapt a normal primus omnifuel or optimus nova stove (and maybe polaris too) burner for their u25 and u27 kits for like 25 pounds. And in that case, you can maybe get the both of best worlds for a fairly moderate price. :)

Its not possible to get blue flames from alcohol in MF-burners.
Any alcohol based fuel will damage the o-rings

There surely nice but the price is to ridiculous
You will need to clean the jet more priming with paraffin but if your happy with that and a mucky burner bell then carry on. The other option is using Coleman fuel which primes and burns very well. Its come down in price a lot so shop around and its about a fiver a litre. Unlike petrol or paraffin it leaves no odour if you spill some. Google aspen 4T, its very clean burning petrol and google will show stockists. Great stove, enjoy it :) Also look up spirit burner dot com
1:10 explain what four times cheaper means, explain the math, yes, impossible. Times always means more, thus you start with the cost of the Trangia bottle then times it by a number other than zero or one the result is always more never less. My guess is you meant to say, is it is one quarter the cost, of course that statement would make complete sense.
