  • In this video I started the rebuilt 9.5 for the 1st time just to kick it over in the garage after completion of the powerhead.Started right up twice and quit. Put a gearcase on it and cant get it to run long and start properly after this video. So the challenge continues to get it running again. This is the third 9.5 Im doing in a 5 week period or so.

These lovely engines love to breath their own exhaust, seemed like it was running OK, hard to tell by the audio. Then it just seemed to shut off. On the other hand, the 58 10hp looks like a sold project for sure, I love them also. Original cracked coils are actually a good thing, means the engine doesn't have alot of hours on it. These engines had sloppy wrist pin issues, but am guessing this one is OK due to its low hours. The gearcases are the other issues, OK until water gets inside and then the power of the 10hp kills the lower driveshaft bushing along with the mating surface on the driveshaft. Hoping this one is OK. These engines run so nice, and will run rings around the 9.5s. Hoping the mounts don't break when you change the steering bracket.

Yes these old 1958 10HPS are sweet so simple and yes they had their numerous faults no needles on the wristpins you can upgrade them no reason to here also 5 1/2-6Hp weaker lower units and I am very surprised the badge survived. Mind you Don if I didnt collect these from the yards they would all be gone for ever so I prolonged their existance at least a little longer anyway,HA!. That 9.5 has me thinking for sure. Going to test the flywheel magnets and swap it and also change the other coil soon thats a start...I have a box full of mounts from years collected from scrapped motors.....I will check the gearcase oil soon too..Stay Tuned ..
