TY for sharing... Please when you have a moment, Very curious what your thoughts are now concerning AAR & LOE and why they didn't work for your sweet DD?? I have a very reluctant reader and have been trying to figure out what curricula to go with...

I have had two very reluctant readers so far. I am no expert, but I feel like children decided to learn to read when they have a need for it. Maybe work on finding something se would love doing that requires her to know how to read (for my oldest it was video games).
I believe AAR and LOE are some of the best options out there for teaching kids to read, but they were just not how my kids like to learn. Maybe look at subjects that she enjoys and see if you can find a reading curriculum that is similar. Or give Pinwheels a try! We have really loved the approach they take!
With my oldest we took a long break from an curriculum at all and just focused on snuggling on the couch with some great pictures while I read to her. It's okay to not actively be working on learning to read. And it's okay if she is not reading by the time she is in 1st grade. I've read that you should not worry until they are at least 7 (my second was 8 before she started to really read).
Hang in there Momma! You guys will find the right puzzle piece to make it click.

We loved AAR and went all the way through level 4 with my 6yo who is able to read upper level books like the percy Jackson series now and it’s all thanks to AAR. We haven’t tried the other because AAR was such a great fit for my son we stuck to it.

Just curious, what did you incorporate for the other aspects of LA (spelling, writing, comprehension)?

I have a preschooler and am researching for kindergarten, your content has been so helpful! LOE and Pinwheels were my top picks so I can’t wait to see more about them and how they’re taught. Side note: I love your video about Google classrooms - such a great idea! Keep up the great work 👍🏼

We are currently using AAR1 with our nearly 7 year old and just turned 6 year old. Our older one is doing really well. He is able to pick up other books and sound out words and read. Our younger one has just started but seems to be working well and steadily through it.
I'd started looking into Pinwheels as another parent had mentioned it was much 'better', covered more like grammar and other things. So I started to have self doubt and wondered if I was doing 'enough' for our children 😅. We do handwriting separately as we didn't want reading to be tied to handwriting ability. There's some basic grammar that's covered but most don't introduce formal grammar until later.
I've been looking at Pinwheels and the samples etc but it feels more complex and rigid and harder to follow. But that could just be me so I would love to understand better how it's meant to work in practice and how it's different in pace and content to something like AAR. AAR feels really well laid out for it to be open and go, the children love the readers. The practice sheets get a bit long but we split them up and make games with them when needed.
Looking forward to your upcoming videos!

AAR is a great program! If your kiddos like it and are doing well, I say stick with it. I loved how open and go it was. It was sooo easy. But I do wish it included some more LA elements (such as grammar and writing).
We are truly enjoying Pinwheels. It is more complex, but only because you are adding in the additional LA elements like writing, spelling, and grammar. I do not find it to be rigid. There are many activities and games that help to make it feel fun. And it is easy to adjust to your child's "bandwidth" (how much they can tolerate in one sitting.
It is a little less open and go than AAR, but with my sticky note system, I would say it takes me about 10 minutes to plan out which activities I'm going to do each day the next week. It still contains scripts for each and every activity and worksheet.
The initial set-up for the Pinwheels is VERY time consuming and intimidating. Fair warning! But once I got it set up and starting doing it, it is very easy to use. I have seen a great deal of progress in my reluctant reader!
The video will be up on Monday 4/4! I hope it helps you! And, as always, I'm happy to answer any questions you have!

We have been using Pinwheels since it was released. My older son is now working through the Wand. We have enjoyed the total language arts approach. AAR moved too fast for my oldest dyslexic ADHD son. In my experience, Pinwheels and the Wand is a much more accessible program for the neuro diverse student.

We started with AAR with my oldest and he did not like it at all! Those fluency sheets were just the worst!! We switched to LOE and he's done so well!! I just started LOE with my second and he's loving it too! He loves how active all the games are- it's so engaging!! I looked over Pinwheels and it looks awesome too, but LOE is working so we'll stick with that! But I'm thinking I'll try one of the Rooted in Language courses for parents! I've heard really great things about them!
