In this episode I'm joined by Levi Spangler, who is a UA-camr and editor for the Kyle Hates Hiking channel. We talk about his experiences hiking in North Carolina, and get into some 'spicy' topics concerning the work we are doing on the Kyle Hates Hiking channel. Have I sold out? What are some of the common critizisms I get after shifting my content into the mystery space? All of this and much more.

Thank's for having me on! It was super fun!
Oh my gosh! I had no idea you were the editor for Kyle. I really like Kyle, but you too!!! How great would it be to meet both of you someday!
You’re my favorite Kyle guest so far. Lol. I love how you be sure to emphasize the horse stole your backpacking spoon, not your horse tranquilizer spoon. 😂 🥰
Just came here to say that I'm one of the people that started watching because of the "true crime" type of content, but stayed to learn more about backpacking and camping. I'm a casual day hiker, the longest I've ever hiked in one day was 12 miles in the Mount Rainier forest. I don't see myself ever doing a through hike, but I find your insight incredibly valuable. I love the main channel stuff, and recently got into the podcast. Keep doing what you're doing, I hope things keep going well for you
Thank you so much!! Hope you continue to get out there!
No one can survive without sponsorship anymore. People just love to be judge, jury and executioner on the internet. I think what matters with sponsorship is that the creator still keeps their authenticity and integrity and Kyle is doing a really good job with that I think.
I agree. I don’t know how people expect content creators to pump out the content with no compensation indefinitely while we still get to enjoy all their hard work for free. That’s just wild to me lol. A lot of people don’t understand what it takes to make a video either. Just the hours and hours editing, not to mention filming, scripting and everything else behind the scenes.
Thank you so much!
@@trailtalespod well, I meant it! Don't let the haters get to you, you've got such a nice channel and community!
I have no strength for hiking now, so im hiking vicariously through you!
Your tales are so genuine and thankful when people survive, with shout outs to those who found them, that alone is really kind - maybe peeps don't know they exist to donate to until you give them a "we're here, and we help A LOT".
Sorry for waffling 😂😂
Kyle, remember you can't please everyone. The vast majority of your viewers think you're doing an amazing job. Don't feel guilty for earning an income through YT. I personally believe giving should be part of everyone's lives. Its so rewarding both ways. You're greatly appreciated man!
“They see me walking, they hating. I’m strolling, they trying to catch me hiking nerdy.”
I love Levi's channel. Thanks for having him on!
He's awesome!
Levi is awesome. And you too. Love the energy you both have.
I'm definitely one of those people who got into the hiking stuff via the mystery videos; the Stephen Olshansky video was the first, then I looked into what thru-hiking was, checked out other videos, discovered you didn't hate hiking, then fell down the rabbit-hole of other hiking content out there. And here I am now, having listened/watched all Trail Tails eps, been on a bunch of hikes myself, including my first 3-day ~50-mile backpacking trip, with other bigger thru-hikes being added to the bucket-list!
So thanks for everything you guys do; inspiration can come from everything we see and do, it's enough to just open someone's eyes to something different that they wouldn't have known about otherwise.
I think the mystery videos are just you finding your niche in the world of hiking-related content, and as you discussed before, there's still the podcast etc that ties back to the hiking nerdiness. You've been talking about taking things 'to the next level' recently, and what you guys mention here is pretty much what I would have recommended too - Getting out there in person to the sites of some of these mysteries. If handled appropriately, it might even be an opportunity to tie some hiking back in to it; you hike, camp, explore an area first-hand, and share someone's story and offer some respectful lessons or insights based on it. It wouldn't have to be every video, and wouldn't even have to follow the same format as your current mystery videos, could just be an extra "series" that you sometimes do.
Either way, I look forward to seeing where you go/grow next.
I got thee pleasure of having Kyle as a guest in my house and the dude is absolutely awesome , funny , and as authentic as he is in his videos . I love that you’ve diversified your portfolio and do more than just hiking videos ! Keep up the hard work brotha we all love you out here
Congrats on the success Kyle, I hope it lasts for a long time. Nobody in your position would turn down the success you are having.
With that being said I do miss your old content about hiking. Particularly trails you have done like the Northville Placid trail.
I love the addition of true crime. I can't listen while on trail, I scare myself, but I don't miss an episode otherwise! My two favorite things in one!
I really enjoyed this one! I've been around since you started doing the true crime hiking stories. I already watched some backpacking content as well so the algorithm figured you'd be a good fit.
I really like the mix of both on your channel. No one should begrudge you your bag with sponsors. I'm excited to continue to follow your channel.
Yooo I live in Asheville. This is so exciting to see love for our Appalachian mountains. I’m about to drop my first UA-cam video this week about a solo hike at black balsam on the art loeb. Linville gorge is beautiful!! I’m so hype right now hahaha.
you live in an amazing area!
Thanks I’m very lucky to have landed here 10 years ago. Everyday I’m surrounded by beauty and it always amazes me. If I didn’t live in a single wide trailer there’s no way in hot hell that I would be able to afford to live here though. I just assimilated into my true hillbilly form.
Dude you inspiring randoms to thru hike is so dope and is basically the pinnacle of UA-cam backpacker content. Great job.
Been watching your channel for a couple of years and the Podcast for a little over year and enjoy both. Have hiked on and off for years but new to backpacking and just finished my first backpacking trip yesterday. I did put into what I learned from the stories you have told and what viewers have commented. I believe it helped so I will just say thanks.
I’m subscribed because you keep it real. Kicking it and listening to y’all talk story.
I love the lessons. It helps prepare for the next 14er for me. And it probably helps other hikers as well
glad you like it!
You develop and share awareness!!! Also, still cool my husband and I met you last summer coming down Crawford Path and you are definitely authentic and hilarious... your video editor is super chill, y'all do great work!
I remember meeting y'all!!
Trail tales is definitely my favorite of the many hiking style channels, A side from the docu styled thru-hikes I've started watching, The fire reminded me of those old rescue 911 videos back in the day freakin epic, I agree the out on location content is more engaging. I liked the original Kyle Hates Hiking content when I was really researching backpacking but I can see that getting old after awhile. I feel like there's no shame in accepting income for something you love. Plus you're not hiding it which is even better. I also love the drama. A few years ago I was like "everyone is making crime related content, but I just want trail related crime content, So thank you. You found a niche and went for it. No shame. True hiking nerds will watch it all. Definitely going to check out Levi's channel. Awesome guest. Also screw those f^&*s who say you're taking advantage, every victim of an unsolved case knows coverage is essential to finding answers and spreading the word, who better than an actual hiker and popular HIKING channel to address it.
Yeah Durham can have High Point, Greensboro and Winston Salem dont want it 😂
You guys are doing a good thing...stay with it...that foundation will happen when everything including you are ready...so until then...keep going...keep giving the take aways...the military does what's called an After Action Report...no matter what...who lives...who dies...get the lessons learned and move on and allow your future actions to be better. Once again...keep doing what you're doing on here and on the main channel. I'm a day hiker and I see where even I can learn from these tales of things gone awry. That and I may take up weekend hikes in the future. Take care guys and keep up the good work!!!
This is awesome!! I love hiking Linville Gorge!! Hope to see Levi there one day
Also I did sintex Linville loop. It’s freaking tough asf. I’m going back in a couple weeks to fully finish it from start to finish again
I ran the Pikes Peak Marathon last year and have hiked other 14ers in Colorado but live on the east coast. I’ve done hikes in the Adirondacks that were far harder than many of the 14,000 ft mountains in Colorado. But you’re right, people always sleep on our east coast mountains 😂
it's sad!
Yeah about the only remaining non sponsored backpacking UA-camr is Jessica Mills/Dixie. But yeah man, you should really start thinking about rebranding because this isn’t a backpacking channel anymore.
This channel is a backpacking podcast channel
@@trailtalespod🤣🤣🤣 this comment.
Woo NC!
The media as a whole makes profit off of misfortune. And at times they actually create the misfortune so that they have a story. That is just part of life at this point. There is nothing wrong with telling their stories.
Best listened to at like 1.75 speed. lol.. did you sell out? No. Your channel evolved. Moving on!
My sleep position is wiggle, and I recommend the warbonnet gathered xlc you need the length to be twice as long as your height. I can get in my side and star position tummy. Also just look at a lot of how to videos, you have to have the right hang angles for a goodnights sleep.
I subscribed to the main channel at around 20k subs. I do miss the old format but I get it, make that bread I aint mad. I thought a mix of missing 411 type and backpacking was good. But ya gotta do what ya gotta do.
Put the tips in your videos almost like mini ads. You could add tips in with text on the video as well. I'm sure you guys could get pretty creative about it, and it could definitely save someones butt.
This is my favorite podcast and hope it doesn't change. The other is great but those comments are toxic af. I shared about an incident on a solo trek and was trashed and told I asked for it.
Actually, I watch you more now that you're doing other stuff besides gear and things. The content got better and you separated yourself from the others. When 5000 youtubers cover the same gear, it becomes more obvious that' it's just BS. Do I always agree with some things on your topics? Of course not, but what you do now seems much more authentic and real and you being you. Keep up the good work, Kyle
You don't need to do ANYTHING, Kyle. You don't need to change channel name, content or anything. Why ppl think you _should_ is THEIR issue > PoDcAsT NaMe NeEdS To MaTcH CoNtEnT. No it doesn't. If anyone's been listening they know what you pump out. I watched because of true crime and KYLE HATES HIKING to me means _look what CAN happen when you go hiking_ I watch because i know basically what I'm gonna get: crime or hiking info.. and bonus, your personal experiences.
As for sponsorship.. WHY TF NOT? Aren't you trying to make a living?!!! Go for it.
Much aloha 🤙🏽♥️🙏🏽
appreciate that so much! thanks for the kind words
I found Trail Tales through the main channel; obviously you're doing something right or you wouldn't have so many followers. I think it's great that you're donating to the various search and rescue operations.
thank you so much!
I have enjoyed your videos about missing hikers etc, as someone who likes some true crime videos....but yes, never drop the bit about lessons, I have learned a lot from those. It's important - and it's a backpacking thing, in that way you are staying in the backpacking niche by including that.
I'm happy for your You Tube success, but I'm not gonna lie...I miss the actual hiking content. If you ever hike the CT, CDT or the Hayduke Trail, I'll subscribe.
Yo man, honestly, LMNT is awesome so theres no shame in promoting
I love LMNT!
At least you still have good content on this channel. Maybe need a 3rd channel for actual hiking
hey kyle, i see you are hitting the bong again pretty hard for the thumbnail, you should probably take a little break before shooting photos
There are a few channels that cover lost hiker tyoe stories, but their story telling is shit. Kyle your style and the way you respect the people's families is like to other. Keep it up.
I do kind of miss the hiking content tho.
Levi, good job on the editing! 😊
I do like the true-crime vids, but I really miss the old hiking vids as well.
You Created a Platform ,It must be Hard to Create Content,Alot of Hikers Have more miles than you and I think they hold that against you ,but Hey making Hiking Content vids helps you stay in the Game so Props to you
I really don't get how people complain about talking about missing people and true crime like it's taking advantage of people. You're not taking "advantage" of them. Doctors get paid for unfortunate circumstances and so do police, firefighters, etc. Really you're getting paid for the information you give us and it also is the only way some people will be found by regular hikers out there like us. If you're providing a service, there's nothing wrong with us paying you for it or advertisers selling on the channel.
LMNT sponsors almost every UA-camr I follow 😂
Haters gonna hate … keep your integrity …. Talk about products you like and do you …imho
🤘🤘
Dan Becker totally criticized you when he said he only puts out videos of hikers that survived a tragedy on the trial, and did not die, What says you ?
Hey Kyle, I heard Temu are looking for someone to sponsor
Hammocks RULE!
facts!!
@@trailtalespod Would you consider the AT hammock'able?
Sold out to "Big Backpacking", LOL, too funny.
😂😂
Are you crying in the thumbnail?!?!!
The comedy is gone , i used to laugh from kyles vides , now i just feel sad thinking of the great old videos
I like the addition of true crime to your channel but also miss the humor and goofing off.. and Flossy. No more meth jokes? :( Where did you canoe in Maine?
I did the Moose River Bow Trip!
@@trailtalespod Nice! that's been on my radar for quite some time.
People that sale out still give good backpacking stories...
I miss crazy Kyle
This channel gets suggested to me by the algorithm all the time and I never watch because of the thumbnail photos. Why the fake bloodshot eyes? Like it’s one thing if you have chronic dry eye or something but clearly nothing wrong with your eyes in the actual videos from the couple seconds I’ve seen, so why try to portray yourself like you’re under the influence of something? It contributes zero to the appeal of the channel for most people I would think so just why…
We like your creativity thats why we started watching the show got me into the hiking stuff now it creeps me out and makes me not want to hike...
I tried listening to one episode in camp this weekend and I had to switch to something lighter so I could stop looking over my shoulder. Get out there anyway!
What happened to the non backpacking companies...
You should really rename Kyle hates hiking to Kyle crimes or something
Nothing like what Kyle hates hiking use to be
This video sounds like he's trying to make himself feel better
Kyle has turned into "the view" of hiking
Booo I like the old show
Yawn
@hikerboi420 @icrushmiles 😂
