    Don’t take lack of views as evidence viewers don’t love the video. The algorithm is so frustrating. I’ve had to go searching to find videos from channels I subscribe to because they don’t show up in my feed. I can’t be alone on this. I’ve seen some amazing videos with less views and I’m shocked. But I really think sometimes the algorithm is wonky.

    Kyle I stand by you for backpacking camp chairs. But I do a lot of kayak camping and it’s a different game. You can take a chair, firewood and a cooler in a personal boat. You just need a day pack for adventures during camping. None of the weight of the cooler or firewood or chair will ever be on your shoulders. IKEA bags are the best, balance the boat and you’ll be fine.

  • @thisbeem2714

    I have scoliosis in my lower back and sitting on the ground for any period of time is painful. I reluctantly took a chair on a backpacking trip once and realized that it was worth it, because the next day I was able to get up and hike out without pain. I don’t know if I’d take it on long trips where I’d just be hiking or sleeping, but a trip where I might be sitting and talking I would find it worth it.
    As a younger person I know I would have scoffed at bringing a chair. As a 47 year old I had to grudgingly admit that the extra pound was worth being able to stand up straight the next morning.
    If I went with Kyle’s opinion that once I need a chair I’m going to stop hiking I would miss out on some good fun. I mean I don’t NEED it, but it extends the number of days I can comfortably hike.

    Honestly, it sometimes is worth it to buy expensive gear right away. I spent, probably, more money on cheaper gear trying to find a good sleep in the woods below -20C before eventually ending up with TNF Inferno (-29C) sleeping bag and Thermarest Xtherm mat. There is often a reason for a gear to be that expensive, and the reason commonly isn't the brand name only.

    • @thisbeem2714
      @thisbeem2714 Місяць тому

      It’s hard to figure out which expensive thing I want until I have tried some things and learned what I like and don’t. I wouldn’t want to splurge for an expensive quilt or hammock to then figure out I just don’t like it. I know there are ways to try things out without spending money, but gear rentals or borrowing from someone isn’t always available. Still, once I’ve decided I like something I agree that it’s better to just spend the money up front. Hands down.

    I sent an uberlite back to cascades designs...I couldn't find a leak but it was always losing air. They told me it was discontinued and sent me a neoair. I actually had violated the warranty by putting velcro on it...but they said since it was a "manufacturing defect" they would replace it. I think basically the material is too thin and can sometimes allow air through even without a leak.
    I still have a short size uberlite. Same problem with that one. Maybe if someone is not as heavy as myself it would work...but I think its a flawed design.

    Klymit might not be the warmest, but they're in my top 2 most comfortable pads as a side sleeper. I even prefer them over those super thick self-inflating pads used for car camping.

    • @archi-mendel
      @archi-mendel Місяць тому +2

      The problem with Klymit is that they misled people by saying their mats have r-value of 4.4 (suitable for winter) when it actually isn't warmer than a much lighter foam pad. It's simply unprofessional and dangerous. Some time ago, lots of people recommended their mats as one of the best for hiking, now they're not. And this is well deserved.
      I'm saying this as an Insulated Static V owner. It's not just "not the warmest", it's simply shouldn't be used in below freezing temperatures. And the whole idea that sleeping bag will expand in those gaps is, honestly, ridiculous. I once slept on this pad on the icy ground with an additional 1cm thick foam pad underneath it at -13C. I felt chilly the whole night, despite I had quite a few extra clothing on me. At morning, that ice melted under the mat.
      With Thermarest Xtherm, I slept in the same sleeping bag at -15C in my underpants only, and I had to open sleeping bag zipper a bit as it was simply hot inside.
      Klymit Static V, insulated or not, are summer sleeping mats and they should be promoted as such only.

    • @thisbeem2714
      @thisbeem2714 Місяць тому +1

      @@archi-mendelgood to know. It’s a bummer they misrepresented the R value.

    • @archi-mendel
      @archi-mendel Місяць тому

       @thisbeem2714 they just made it up based on their assumption that sleeping bag feeling those gaps adds huge r-value. But it doesn't actually fill it in real life situation and it also depends a lot on a certain sleeping bag (some of the professional ones have less insulation on the back to save weight, not even speaking about quilts).
      The conventional ASTM tests gives insulated version r-value dropping from 4.4 to 1.9 is (which is similar to Thermarest Ridge Rest closed cell foam sleeping pad) and regular version from 1.5 to 1.3 (which is similar to a cheap 8 mm closed cell foam sleeping pad).
      On their official websites they still promote their made-up r-values and on their products they promote their made-up r-values followed by ASTM ones.
      Anything below 2 is considered summer, 3-season has to be at least 2 and winter - at least 4. So, they promote purely summer sleeping pads as well suitable for winter.
      This is nothing but scam. And a very dangerous one. Not sure why outdoor community didn't boycott their products yet.
      Myself, I paid for this misleading information with with 2 weeks of bronchitis. I was blaming my custom-made sleeping bag for this, until I got myself a legit winter mat.

    • @gman963
      @gman963 Місяць тому

      @@archi-mendel Bronchitis is a viral infection. Their pad didn't give you bronchitis.

    • @archi-mendel
      @archi-mendel Місяць тому

       @gman963 okay, I'll take your pass and will play this "I'm smart" game as well.
      Exposing your body to low temperatures severely limits its ability to withstand viruses. This is why flu, which is a viral infection, is often referred to as "getting a cold". It's also why exposing your lungs to cold temperatures often leads to pneumonia.
      There are numerous studies out there, for example, the "Exposure to cold and respiratory tract infections" article states:
      "Although not all studies agree, most of the available evidence from laboratory and clinical studies suggests that inhaled cold air, cooling of the body surface and cold stress induced by lowering the core body temperature cause pathophysiological responses such as vasoconstriction in the respiratory tract mucosa and suppression of immune responses, which are responsible for increased susceptibility to infections."
      Now, back to the original topic - Klymit is scamming people and exposing them to dangerous situations like getting hypothermia while being far away from people and hospitals. And yes, they were the reason of me catching that bronchitis.

      I suppose enough people think of uniqueness on a spectrum that the misuse doesn’t matter anymore. People use it as a synonym of rare.

    I just bought a chair zero for my backpacking in Grayson Highlands over the past day … it was so nice to just have a chair

    Klymit sleeping pads are not great, but I have the camp chair, packable daypack, inflatable seat cushion (which doubles as a backpack cushion.) I love all of them.

      Klymit are great if they would be promoted by Klymit as summer ones (which they are), not as winter ones (when speaking about insulated series). They are super cozy, unless it's below freezing.
