The key is in the first line, “He said I’ll love you till I die.” He kept his word. It was common in the past to place a black wreath on the grieving family’s door. Soon they’ll carry him away (to the grave).
They place a wreath on the door so people will know that there's a death in that home & no one will come knocking on the door on non-important issues. I still plan on doing that.
He loved her. She loved him once too, but then she left. He was hurt and never stopped loving her, and then he died. His heartbreak never mended. She came to see him one last time -- in his coffin, at his funeral. This is one of the saddest songs ever. The musical instruments were harmonica and pedal steel guitar.
Love how this song tells you right from the start what it is all about .. "He said I will love you until I die"..... and yet so many people MISS what the song is about until the end, or they have to be TOLD what it is about. BUT when you go into the song KNOWING what is actually happening, it has a different emotional impact. A man dies, and his best friend has to explain how he FINALLY stopped loving a woman that is no longer in his life, to the point that people wondered if she would even be bothered to show up to his funeral or not.
Darling, baby girl. Dude passed away. He stopped loving her because he died..."they placed a wreath upon his door....and soon they'll carry him away". He only stopped loving her because he died.
Oh Biss, country music is such a HUGE rabbit hole. The "old" country vs "modern" country alone is like comparing Elvis to Alex Terrible in the "Rock" category. The differences are so vast it's hard to believe they are in the same genera. Anyway, I'm glad to see you getting started with the "older" stuff even though Garth Brooks is more modern than George Jones. Maybe next time you could stay with the older country and go with Hank Willams Sr., Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, or Roy Clark.
It doesn't matter what kind of music you like, this song is still a top masterpiece. I played in a Country band for awhile, and we did this song many times; then one Saturday night - on stage - it hit me... He's being carried away in a box! A good choice today!
I also would sometimes play in a country band with my dad, my uncle, and two cousins, in the various dives and VFW halls, etc. I've played this song dozens and dozens of times with my dad. He had always been a country musician. When he died, rather than have the church play religious organ music, which he couldn't stand, I put together a tape of the various artists doing the songs he used to play and sing and this song was one of them. Everybody understood why we did it, it was the only thing that really made sense. Anyway, this song really takes me back to some special times, as it does for you. Best regards.
George Jones was a country legend singer songwriter from the 50's-80's. He struggled with alcoholism & drugs during his life. He was married at one time to fellow country music singer Tammy Wynette & they had some great duets together. He had so many hits such as "White Lightnin'", "She Thinks I Still Care", "We Must Have Been Out Of Our Minds", "Love Bug", "Things Have Gone to Pieces", "The Race Is On", "My Favorite Lies", "I'll Share My World With You", "Take Me", "A Good Year For The Roses," "If My Heart Had Windows" & many others.
I think people use the word “legendary” too much these days and it loses something special. ❤ Legendary should be used to describe people like George Jones, Elvis Presley, and Roy Orbison.
I love this song. As others pointed out, he only stopped loving her because he died. George himself said the song would never sell because “it’s too damn sad.” But it ended up being one of the biggest hits of his career.
Great use of the instruments in this song to set a sad, sad tone. Harmonica and steel guitar used perfectly. How many songs today are about a love this strong? He loved her, even though she stopped loving him. Only death ended his devotion. You definitely get hooked into the story.
What happened between the two of them is that he died. That's why they placed a wreath upon his door and why they "carried him away" in his coffin. The key to the whole song is in the very first line of the lyrics.
She left him and he said I will love you 'til I die. And he kept his word. He died loving her and that is why he stopped loving her today. Because she never came back except for his funeral.
You picked a good country artist to start with, he is a legend. "A Thousand Miles from Nowhere" and "Guitars, Cadillacs" are a good ones by Dwight Yoakam.
MADALINA - Since American Country music was popular back in the 1940's (in movies) until today, it's a VERY WIDE branch of music. To find a good place to START you might want to find a RECORDS SOLD LIST of the Most Popular Country Singers or different DECADES or the different styles of Country music (which can include Country Rock) ... or the CMA Country Music Awards on TV (that happen every year) ... Christian Gospel can also be found in Country music

Without a Doubt, George Jones 8s THE GREATEST COUNTRY AND WESTERN MUSICIAN OF ALL TIME ( THE G O.AT. 🐐 🐐!! ) NO ONE, AND, I MEAN NO ONE can perform this particular song "He Stopped Loving Her Today. " You MAY wish to take a look at "The Grand Tour" as well
HOPING after reading the comments you will listen to this one again, on your own and not a reaction is fine.... just to see how much more emotional it is KNOWING the guy only stopped loving someone because he died.
The Ol' Possum! Many consider him the greatest country singer ever. Now try Whiskey Lullaby by Brad Paisley & Alison Kraus. Rock is my fave, cntry might be 2nd.Thx Biss!🙌
First things first, love the accent. :) Anyways, I’ll give you a name in country that I grew up with… lived not far from him… Chris LeDoux. Personally, I prefer his older music.
It would be so very, very nice if you listened to a song, sung by a singer named Jack Jones, which is called, If You Go Away. I think you may like it ... a lot! Thank you for your consideration.😎
Apparently, George Jones didn't like this song at first. As soon as he finished recording it, his first words were, "nobody's gonna buy that maudlin piece of shit!" He was wrong. It became his biggest hit and he learned to love it. (Personally, though I'm a lifelong country fan, I've always agreed with Jones's first impression. I don't care for this song.)
I would have paid money to see your reaction when you realized, he died. Also I would like to see what you think of the song "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro. Beware, it's a sad song.
Love your reaction videos I got an awesome country artist for you. George Strait, he is considered the king of country music. Any one of his songs would be great to see your reaction to. It is hard for me to pick just one for you to listen to. But here are a few of his songs, The Chair, Amarillo By Morning, I can still make Cheyenne, A Father's Love, All My Exes Live In Texas There are so many.
IF you cannot find lyric videos, just turn on CC. You will need it for K-Pop!!! I see that the comments have told you the truth of this song. Soo sad, they say it is the best country song EVER written!?!
Biscutte, I think you'll find that most music lovers love the greats in all genres. As you continue your journey you'll find that country music features some of the great voices and story telling.
You didn't quite understand the story. Listen to it again very carefully. Find a video with subtitles. When you understand it, you'll realize why it's such a great song.
George Jones is on my personal Mount Rushmore of favorite artists. His career spanned several decades, and he's one of the biggest influences in the genre.. I personally wish people would check out more from him than just this song, because he's got several songs that I think are better than this one. Whatever you do, don't listen/watch his song "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes". There's a bunch of references to things you haven't been exposed to yet. So although it's another great song by George that people will request, it's not going to be impactful to you unless you listen to more from the genre first.
You will find in Country music. There is sometimes a double meaning or a saying somethings differently. There is a live version to this song. Next, I would suggest George Jones, Who's going to fill thier shoes.
I was too young to appreciate this song when it came out, but my God! it has the greatest punch of any song I've ever heard. Thanks for reacting. I do understand that you missed some of the cultural points. I'd like to hear Manic Street Preachers' I lIve to Fall Asleep.
PS: If you really need a real cry fest, during Mr. Jones' actual funeral service his very good friend Vince Gill sang a tribute song to him. Makes me ball my eyes out uncontrollably every time I watch it.
I dont listen to that much country music but this was pretty good. I will recommend kenny rogers, the gambler. My moms album and fist album that got me interest in music. Loved it.
Two great songs by George Jones that you might want to react to are The Grand Tour and Things Have Gone to Pieces. He also had some monster hits with his then-wife Tammy Wynette Golden Rings, We're Gonna Hold On and Two Story House.
The great thing about the good country songs is they are great storytelling songs. There is a mantra about country music three chords and the truth. When you react to country use the original videos.Try John Michael Montgomery The little girl,Carrie Underwood and Vince Gill How Great thou Art
Thanks for reacting to this masterpiece of country music. I had wondered where Bisscute was from, now I know (Romania). I could listen to that accent all day - love it. She is so cute, with a great personality. Only thing I don't like is her eye makeup - that's a fad that needs to go the way that tattoos should go.
He stopped loving her today, well, because he stopped living today. He's dead. The woman who dumped him is alive. She had moved on years ago. He had not. When you get dumped someday, have your heart broken, you'll listen to this again. It takes a heart of stone not to cry at this one.
Honey, he stopped loving her (and suffering over it) because he died - that's why he's dressed up, smiling first time in years and ready to be carried away.
The guy in the song passed away. That's why he stopped loving her on that day! That's why they placed a wreath on his door. Which used to be a tradition in America, especially in the southern states.
If you want the best string instrument player, Roy Clark. Eddie Van Halen was asked what it was like to be the best guitar player in the world? He said he did not know, he never met Roy Clark. I just found this channel and love your reactions. You light up the room! Peace to all from Oregon.

Exactly, he said I'll love you till I die. The reason he stopped loving her was because he died.
