I have found that the op shops which are on church grounds, next to a church, are usually the cheapest, and they'll often have hidden gems. Small country towns also have some good small op shops.
vinnies and the salvation army have such high prices, they think they're vintage stores. More locally owned Op shops have reasonable prices
Agreed. Even in rural areas our Salvos and Vinnies are highly priced. The smaller community stores have much more affordable items . Red Cross are a good in between usually because they often have over stocks and brand new items for cheaper than salvos & vinnies.
@alisondavis1437 Yeah, I agree, I'm in a small area, and our vinnies is ridiculous.
I'm glad your community has the red cross, they sound pretty good!
I am definitely learning that! I found a few local shops with much lower prices, and Red Cross does seem to be in the middle.
@@WellREDWardrobe Try Noffs Op Shop for cheaper prices. I can see you're based in Glebe, so the closest would probably be the Newtown or the Petersham store. Good luck!
In Australia, they're called Op Shops!
I am in Au. Im so over the horrid prices in op shops. I gave up.
You have to go regional! The op shops in the city are rubbish. They’re just not opportunity shops anymore. I’ve found secondhand clothes in there that are more expensive than the brand new versions. It’s ridiculous! But in regional VIC they understand that they get the donated items in, and they need to get them out as soon as possible to make room for more stuff. That’s where it’s cheap!
Have you been to Noffs? Super cheap prices, most things $5. I went this past weekend and everything was half off! Got a $1 Stellino top and $5 Marcs skirt. They dont have as good a selection as other op shops, but worth the rummage! Salvos have sales on certain days with different coloured tags. My all time favourite is U-turn Warehouse in Punchbowl. The selection there is huge. They sell by the kilo at the back section and do discounts in sets of three (eg 3 tops for $18). Nothing is priced individually so great prices on big brands! Definitely worth a drive out. You could spend all day there and not finish. They also have an awesome membership system where you get points that turn into money off your next buy. Anyway hope that helps a bit as you start. Welcome to thrifting in Sydney!
Thank you so much!! Noffs has been on the list but I didn’t know what to expect, this sounds great!! And now I have to find out where Punchbowl is, I’ve only visited U-turn in Newtown so far and the warehouse sounds awesome. Thank you for the advice and welcome 💙
Wow those prices 😮 Sydney is one of the most expensive cities to shop in Australia, I’m 2 hours from Melbourne I find our local op shop is $5 an item no mark ups and Ballarat is anywhere from $4 to $15 I hope you find some of the better priced shops those prices are ridiculous. Good luck 🤞
Thank you!! I’ve found a few and have so much more to explore and learn for sure!! The sticker shock is very real.
eastern Sydney is, but there's lots of suburbs where the prices are much lower.
@WellREDWardrobe stay away from Vinnies unless you want to pay $$$
Check out smaller ones especially ones run by churches., Lifeline generally have some good items most pieces approx $8
OMG 😱 I'm Australian and l love op shopping. Sydney prices are RIDICULIOUS!!
I have flipped quite a few items.
Where l live there is no way ld pay $80 for opshop stuff..😮
Iv purchased Country Road, Witchery Dejuba sportscraft for $3-12 bucks.
Sold for $40-90
You may have to go way way way out to outer suburbs. Aim for the low social economical areas. The higher brands may be less. But the prices would be low as well.
Sydney, shame on you!!!
Horrid prices
Go to Parramatta Blacktown Penrith, Windsor less expensive
Samaritans at Wallsend Newcastle NSW is the best op-shop ever!
Vinnies are the most expensive op shops Salvos at Belmont North the best op shop in Newcastle very reasonable prices
Thanks for the tip! I appreciate it!
Yes Newcastle areas great, went to Dungog got 4 curtains Home and garden for $8.00 worth the price, not used either. Garman is great. Got a cord skirt for $10 at Salvos awesome
Vinnies has ridiculously high prices I don’t even walk in there!
Depends where you are, in regional NSW prices are very good, but you do not get the high end clothing or labels.
and your problem was that you were shopping in Sydney..Sydney is god damn expensive..you should have gone to outer suburbs or do a trip down to Melbourne..things are getting dearer here in Melbourne as well, but it also depends on what suburbs you are shopping in..Salvos and Vinnies that are in outer or rural areas tend to have lower prices because they are funneling the money back into their own areas rather than into the big wig coffers..
Kangaroos - they're cute and cuddly looking and they will also punch you in the face..... or you can have them as a burger......😅😅😅
oh that cracked me up, brilliant ! Great video, I love your accent, I could listen to you all day. I agree with the comments already made, Vinnies is expensive, there are cheaper op shops. And welcome to Australia 🥰
Thank you for the welcome and the very kind comments ♥️
Target is closing down most of its stores atm. I think theyre just going to have Myer and Kmart as their brands.
Oh wow, I had no idea! I love Target but Kmart has most of the same items at least. Thanks for sharing!
Vinnies and Salvo's in the regional area's are much cheaper, but you will not get high end clothing, or labels. Smaller op shops are sometimes really good, and you can often fill a bag for $5 or suchlike.
Awesome video thanks for sharing.
The prices in op shops in Australia are ridiculous, particularly as they are donated stock for free, and are mostly staffed by volunteers. They're basically glorified resellers, certainly not helping the poor and needy.
I give my clothes to the actual places
They are making money for helping poor. You pay to support, rather than provide them with clothes. Spend some time understanding how these care organisations work and you will be impressed
I do wish it could be a better mix - lower prices for shoppers (even resellers like me) would still give them a profit and would make room for new inventory. Ive seen the same clothes weeks later just sitting there on the rack which is frustrated. Prices are just too high. Selling for less would enable more $$ in volume to go to their chosen charity, I don’t understand why they don’t use that business model to be honest.
The point isn't to cater to reselling rouges @@WellREDWardrobe
@@L0U1SE Sadly many op shops in Australia are now run by third parties who pass on only a percentage of profits to charity, but the business is run as commercial enterprise.
Looking forward to thrifting in Sydney next month to see what I might find. I'd love to find some Zimmerman!
I noticed you picked up something that had a tag saying $40 and then said it was too expensive at $60? Were you trying to convert to US$ and doing it incorrectly?
There are plenty of markets you can visit. Blacktown drive in market is every Sunday. $2 entry and lots of super cheap stuff.
Oh wow, yeah there’s no telling where my mind was on that one but it’s very likely I was mathing in reverse and got lost in the numbers. Thanks for watching!
Yes please, it is not well known in Australia what other brands Target sell
I'm in Sydney and once was struggling financially so I went to Vinnies to try and get clothes for my kids and the prices were nearly as as high as Kmart and BigW.
I see that here for sure and it’s disappointing because new fast fashion is more affordable than secondhand, and finances often make the choices for us! Temu/Shein is ultra popular (especially in Australia according to news) for that reason.
looks like a good start in the new country!!
It’s certainly fun getting to go out and explore and see what’s there!! I know you know 😊
Sydney rents are sky high so it impacts the prices.
The Salvos on Crown St Surry Hills is really good.
Good to know! There are so many locations still to visit!
Lots of great brands but ouch on those prices! Looks like you found a few nice things, will cross fingers that they sell at good prices. Fun to see your new life down under. :)
Thanks so much! It’s a bit like a game, trying to figure out how to make it all work out. Challenge accepted ♥️
have you found the Savers store out west in Sydney?
Go out to the small town vinnies they are better priced in Australia
Oh yeah the sockets in England all have switches as well. It takes getting used to every time I am in the UK. OMG those prices are so high!!! LOL Umm cows are cute but also tasty! LOL
So high!! But it is what it is so have to make it work right?!? Figuring it out as I go, also missing bins and bulk buying. You know I’m a cheeseburger connoisseur, I’ll eat cow, kangaroo, deer, and also the GF vegan patties - I’m an equal opportunist cheeseburger fanatic 😂
Avoid the branded op-shops such as Salvos, anglicare, vinnies. Try to find the small ones, and some churches have little op-shops attached, but theyre not open all the time.
Honestly our op-shop prices are embarrassing.
Bec& Bridge are popular in Hollywood.
Yeah it’s not like American , our shops are more expensive! Here !
So true!
Welcome to Oz!
Thank you!
Did you add baking soda to the burgers? Adds a nice little spice.
I find it’s better on chicken wings actually 😂
People are becoming more savvy with prices. I buy a lot on ebay but I get better prices there than at the Op Shops. The Oppies are too expensive these days & I only buy bargains, good fabrics & vintage. Most items I buy on ebay are way under $100. There are far too many small sizes on offer & not enough medium to large which are the more saleable & searched for sizes.
Hey thank you for sharing this beautiful clip can I know what suburb is there?😊
Inner West Sydney. Thanks for watching!
Your mistake is op shopping (a) in Sydney and (b) at Salvos and Vinnies. I also add that resellers are one of the reasons why op shops prices on better known brands are so high. Why should you make money over a charity?
We are neighbors, it’s to expensive in our neighbourhood. X
Outer suburbs Vinny’s and salvo’s have cheaper prices
Vinnies and Save the Children op shops are pricey and greedy. Try the ADRA shops. They are a little cheeper.
Thank you for the tip and for watching!
Better off going to markets, auctions and garage sales
The Gorman dress was $40 not $60.
Too late for me to edit, but I sure wish I knew what I was thinking when making the video hahahaha! Thanks for watching!
Today i learned our power switches are weird 😂
Hahahaha! Well, different from what I was used to for sure. They’re growing on me. New normal takes time.
We don’t have trolleys in our op shops
That was a big shock to me for sure, I am a fill a cart kind of thrifter! Or I was hahaha. Thanks for watching!
Savers does
My local Vinnies we have baskets .
Bring a canvas bag with you , or ine of those Blue Ikea bags and use it as a basket as you shop. That's what I do.
I use to love going op shopping but not anymore at the prices there charging these days, they should be disgusted in themselves,I just buy brand new now and will not donate anything to them at all anymore,I give my stuff away for fee for someone who wants it
What suburbs are you shopping in?
Inner West. I will have to make a point to venture further from the city! Thanks for watching and commenting.
ha, you shopeed at the most expensive thrift stores in AUS. You need to go to the local independant ones.
I will certainly try to :) Thanks for watching!
That's expensive...Queensland not so extreme in prices....I'm up near Rockhampton and better prices!.....Michelle from Horse Creek Queensland Australia 😊
Good to know! I definitely want to travel more and visit op shops along the way, its my kind of fun. Sounds like Queensland needs to be added to my list!
Try other second hand stores vinnies are not cheap for resellers
If you are doing this in Australia then you are OP SHOPPING.
Very true! I’ll need to remember to use both phrases now for keywords in two countries!
Oh dear Sydney is one of the dearest capitals (NSW) in Australia, and Vinnies are dear enough in any state. I bought a fabulous black Cue dress in Victoria for $4 AU, way overpriced in my opinion. Go to some others in outer suburbs
Op shops are expensive but far too many people go there to buy cheap and then sell it for higher online. Unfortunately it’s those that can least afford to buy at normal prices that get screwed. Personally I don’t buy second hand clothing or shoes. I don’t like the thought of wearing anything that was worn by someone I don’t know. I would rather save my money and buy one classic item brand new or perhaps on sale at a store.
@@Whoever68 Many of the clothes you buy brand new have been tried on by lots of people before you! And people do not just buy second hand to save money, it is also a great way to recycle clothing instead of having it end up in landfill. And depending where you shop you can definitely buy things very cheaply in op shops, but you need to go to more regional places.
I do like the idea of buying well made classic pieces new and keeping for a lifetime (or however long it can last, quality of even luxury brands is declining compared to vintage ones). It’s another great way to keep less clothing from heading to landfills!
@@janetpendlebury6808 you should watch “DeAd White Mens Clothes”. Its very eye opening. It’s why I refrain from buying clothes on a regular basis. I’m lucky if I buy one or two items a year. If I buy anything, I buy a quality piece. I understand the clothes I buy may have been tried on by one or two people for the purposes of seeing if they fit and if they like the item BUT they weren’t worn by them. There is a difference.
A recommendation for a collab I have for you is Aussie thrifting youtuber Jo Dedes Aesthetic
I love watching her content!
Op shops
The Gorman was $40 not $60
My mistake, not sure where my brain was on that edit. Thanks for watching!
Australian op shops are way too expensive
Agreed. I’ve passed on things I would have liked to own because the price points don’t encourage impulsive shopping - which I took for granted as to how secondhand shops operated since they sell used goods and also can’t predict/market ahead of time.
Everything is so overpriced here in AU and small sizes
You need to source which vinnies has reasonable stock and prices. They are mostly all overpriced. Go and find church opshops- only then will you get your bargains..if not save your money do a twice trip back to the US and bring stock back with you. The garbage in these op shops Vinnies, Salvos and the prices aren't worth your time.
I am definitely learning as I go that traveling further out and yes, even picking things up in the States to bring back, is how I will need to do it if I want even a supplement income here. It’s definitely different! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Interesting video but I find the pace way too slow. I'd recommend chatting a bit faster, otherwise people can get bored and drift off before you enunciate the next word.
Thanks for the feedback and for watching!
Australia is a nanny state. Hyperinflation. Australian think high prices mean luxury item like their gyprock houses with no attic or basements 😂
And no walk in closets! I had forgotten about basements, the closet situation is more front of mind for me. Thanks for watching!
It’s a great place to live - love my country, Australia!
🧚🏻♀️❤️🐝🇦🇺
Thrifting in Australia is nothing special. Super rare you will get lucky with international brands. 99% here are local brands, unlnown to the rest of the world.
It’s definitely been a learning experience and a lot of new brands to memorize! Thanks for watching!
don't bother it's a rip off disgusting!
