The way we used to pull VeeDub engines was leave the car on the ground, disconnect everything, unbolt the transmission, block up the engine, roll the car forward a little, then lift the car up and over the engine. It’s a two person job, but it works. Especially if you don’t have lifts.
Sarah.. I admire your tenacity.. when it comes to the engine, try to reseal all the rubber seals as Volkswagen intended, you want cool air in..and hot air out!!!! Ahhh shit I wish I was there to help
10:03 I don't think anyone here would mind if you took a year and a half to restore this car; going down the rabbit is kind of your thang. Five gold stars for your attention to detail. ⭐⭐⭐⭐🌟
I remember going to the “Bug In” at the Orange County drag strip near Tustin, CA in the late ‘70s. They had an engine pulling contest with two people able to pull the engine, move it about 10’ and then reinstall it, all in a few minutes, (don’t remember the actual time), then drive the car. The “Bug In” was a huge annual VW event.
That's ironic. I was talking to the screen and saying out loud she's going down a rabbit hole with this project and your next line was going down a rabbit hole. Nothing stops Sarah, she's the best !
@8:51 I just wanna take a second to let Sarah know that the time and effort it takes her to make herself pretty for her vids is appreciated. I know it's not a very guy thing to say, but I think she'd appreciate the compliment.
Back in my day, I took the passenger seat out of my bug (also a '69), put a spare engine in it's place, drove to the garage on Sembach Air Base in Germany (where I was stationed), swapped out the engine, put the old one back in the car and drove home. Did that in four hours. Ah, to be young again.
I agree with previous comments, Ragnar is my personal favorite of all the project cars so far. Grams Ranger comes in a close second. I like what you're doing with this car. The paint job is beautiful! You did a fantastic job with it. Looking forward to more Ragnar content.
Fantastic job Sarah. Whoever wins this will get a fantastically restored machine! NVH stands for Noise Vibration and Harshness - like you said, automotive speak for squeaks and rattles.
fun fact, the weather stripping around the base of the engine on the body that was ripped out at 9:45 is the only part number that is the same across all years of the VW Beetle.
A couple mods people do to these to make life easier is mod the whole rear valance to be removable. That way the engine comes straight out instead of having to drop it down. Then there are "weber windows" in the sides of the engine bay. Meant for dual carbs but I like it for making it easier work around the engine
This car will be amazing once it's done, even if doesn't meet your high standards! Still Ragnar will be way above most people's standard! Great to see Charlie again!
For the engine bay I would use "Lizzard Skin"coating. Not only is it a great heat barrier the sound deadening properties are excellent. You can either roll it on or spray just like you did with the Raptor liner. Enjoy!
@@johnt.848 I suggested it raptor lines cause I wasn't sure the OEM heat liner was still available. I guess I got a bit ahead of myself and didn't finish the video. But as always Sarah went down that rabbit hole and came back with a heat shield. Bravo Sarah!
Hey Sarah, Great job dropping the engine I still can’t get over how Little rust there is. I think this is gonna turn out even better than you think it will can’t wait to see it finished and I hope your face is OK 🙂have a great holiday weekend🐧🐧🐧👍

Man, that had to hurt. I thought you'd have a bruise there but no. A lot of work to give it away but it will be so nice when it's done. Excellent work Sarah.
Once again down the Sarah obsessive/compulsive hole... Ragnar's looking awesome! I'm sorry your engine removal was such a chore. Maybe before you dive into something unknown, see if a local expert could come by with some tips and tricks? Just a suggestion; I love the show as it is now! ✌️❤️🙂🇨🇦
What great memories of the few times I pull the engine out by myself in a couple of the VW's i had years ago , I for sure wish I had a lift back then , lol .
I find myself looking forward to your description of the video floating above your head, it's always quite funny! I'm a little bass ackwards today, I watched this video after watching the wiring install video first. Been a little busy lately preparing for winter.
You know, I do not think ANYONE would complaine if you took a few extra day to get Ragnar done. EVERYONE here is watching the Progress, who is gonna complain?
My first manual experience was with a "toad", a VW beetle/sand buggy. I have my family to thank for teaching me how to drive stick. I'll never forget how finicky shifting to reverse was on that thing. I appreciate this build because of the experience I've had driving vw engine cars.
Yah I actually lost my engine driving along when I had a VW. I had to turn the car around dragging my engine. I drove slow and it sounded pretty bad but it was about ten below that day so I didn't want to walk home. I had a stationary wagon flavor so it was hanging like the exhaust and a bolt let loose. I loved that car. Gave it to my sis who was on welfare and she drove it till the tires fell off literally. I was in the army back then and didn't want to drive it to Texas.
Yeah, if I remember right the engine is only held in by 4 bolts. It is a bit fiddly to get it out. You are doing fine on this project. There are a ton of creators that would have wrapped it, de-greased it, and sent it. So, you do you and let the haters do the haters. You are going to start the fun parts. Keep up the good work.
You are right about how easy it is to pull an engine out of one of these. I did it one time when I was 12. Rebuilt the engine, but screwed up the wiring on the car and it never started again. Great car to learn on.
Ragnar is coming along beautifully. I understand the OCD for wanting everything to be perfect as my 1979 project car is taking longer than if someone else had it. You have an incredible attention to detail and I can't wait for the final reveal of its completion.
I just found your channel. Awesome! You are very easy to watch and listen. Your professionalism with your work and attention to detail is fantastic! To top it off, your funny as well! Also, you are doing something that is still on my bucket list - restoring (mostly) a late 60's early 70's VW Beetle! Goes without saying that I had to binge watch the series. Can't wait for the next video! I'm hooked!
I used to build & race air cooled Bugs in the ‘80s. That meant pulling the engine(s) weekly. Took about 18 mins to do it. I d buy & sell ones I located in the area-never paid more than $500 for any I bought. I wouldn’t want one these days. Parts are hard to get and cheaply made.

This is fun to watch. For thirty five years all my car work on personal vehicles was 90% labor since disposable hobby money was almost non-existent. This series reminds me of that sort of work. All my work had to result in a drive-able car by Monday morning. Most of it was cleaning and sanding with a few seconds of painting. Like you, I always took out the Home Depot additions and chased down all the previous owners’ modification and jerk temp repairs. Maybe that’s what makes this fun for me. Thanks!
I would rather own Ragnar than any brand new vehicle from Volkswagen or a half dozen other car companies. Your attention to detail is magnificent.
Yes! I hope to win it 🤣🤣
True Story!!!
Also, I will NOT be selling Ragnar after I win him, no matter what you offer me!
Yep, but being in the UK, I can't, but it would be nice if Sarah offered international shipping on the Merch, even without the option to enter.
Agreed
Just pray you don’t get in an accident lol
50% of your standards is probably better than most everyone's 100% especially when it comes to an auto restoration. Well done!
I concur.
Good to see Charlie is back and OK.
So HOW is Charlie??
Yes how is Charlie?
I'm a 30 year air-cooled VDub mechanic and I love what you call the engine tin pieces. I'm rolling on the floor!LOL
Thanks! Drove my bug from 1972 to 1993. Loved that sky blue vw!
bought my 67 in July of 1972 Green tan interior I was in the Navy and traded it on a 74 Opal Manta Rally wish I had both back

Oh god Sarah...I'm face palm right now like she's just gonna keep going on this project... whoever gets this ride better respect.
After watching Mustie1 VW videos for years, i am like- this is SHOWROOM quality.
My grandma is really flattered by your reference to her romantic history. Thank you.
You're doing an amazing job as usual. Ragnar's gonna be better than new when you're done. Hope you didn't concuss yourself
This project brings back fond memories of auto shop class in Darmstadt. All we had to work on were VW Bugs.
I feel like there should be a shirt with Carfuling! on it

Yeah, there is no structural compromised rust. Just surface stuff from the car traveling in Utah sometime during its life.
This is just normal beetle stuff. They are almost all like that.
