I made a chain whip from a wooden plank that has been working much better than any commercial ones. It is longer to give more leverage and the chain is longer so it doesn't slip. The teeth on the cassette have imbedded themselves into the wood so the handle is very stable. The chain is securely attached with screws so there is no need to weaken the pins of the chain by opening them
I had a really bad experience with a chain whip. It was one from Park Tools. One of the links broke...the chain slipped...and broke a tooth off my XX1 cassette. I will never use a chain whip again. I got a Pedro's Vise Whip. Its a pair of vise grips that clamp to the the sprocket. You can also adjust how hard you want the jaws to clamp the sprocket. It will have a secure grip, and you'll never risk it slipping like a chain whip.
3:54 I used to block the chain under the tire of my truck! 4:29 then I found on the roof of my building a thick piece of metal (old bracket for antenna) and I drilled some holes.
I had a completely stuck cassette on an old wheel, I used a pair of vice grips to hold the cassette in place then a wooden mallet to whack the handle of the lockring tool 🤣 it worked, but probably did no good to the cassette

Sorry I had to destroy the '69'th thumbs-up. But I had to praise your instructional simplicity and depth!
can't wait til you get on to disc brakes! 😃
LBS use the power driver with lockring tool for a suddenly hit style drill, without chain whip. That works.
You should try the chain whip produced by Decathlon. This is an other world.
