    Came here for the oil painting and clove tips, left so thrilled about the baking sheet as a palette tip. I was using Tupperware before and need something shallower, so thanks a bunch!

    Does oil paint really “off gas?” I’ve seen many paint companies suggest that oil paint oxidizes by taking in oxygen and does not leech gas or fumes off in an evaporative process. I am assuming here that we are talking about solvent free oil paint of which all the main artist quality paints contain none. I am mostly curious about your opinion on these statements paint companies like Gamblin make because I am concerned about my art products and want to be as healthy and safe in my art practice as is reasonably doable. Thank you for your videos and resources you share!

    I can't use clove oil as it is toxic to cats. However, I did see an Italian artist's demo who immersed his oil palette in water. Worked great!

    Thanks Mary great tip I have ordered some clove oil. Question we have a small wine fridge that we don’t keep food in. Do you have any thoughts if that would help with freshness of oil paint. Just a thought. Thanks for all of your instruction videos.

    Hi Mary, i tried the clove oil and it didn’t work. I just bought the Artizen clove oil which arrived today. Apparently some are watered down with other oils. So $20.00 into this method, I sure hope it works. I am on the West coast, does that make a difference?

      Hi Lorrie, using pure clove oil is best and a sealed palette box. Make sure your box is airtight. 2-3 drops of oil on a pad in each corner of the box.

      Clove oil permanently interferes with the curing ability of oil paints and is not an accepted archival process and will have long term detrimental effects. See Virgil Elliott’s book for details

      @@anselmocat If you mix it in with the paints, absolutely it would. It would make it difficult for the paints to dry. I didn't propose doing that. In fact I said not to do that for that very reason. Putting a couple of drops of clove oil on a piece of cotton or felt in the corner of the palette will not interfere with the curing ability of the painting.

      @@anknaparkin7510 As long as you're not mixing it into the paint you're fine.

      Mary Gilkerson actually even doing this still interferes with the the long term curing of the paint. It’s still the same chemical exposure and process albeit less concentrated. Read Virgil Elliott’s book for confirmation

    I seal up my paints in a Tupperware container when I’m traveling home from plein air. Sometimes I use the Tupperware containers painting at home too. There seems to be some fumes when I open it. People say the powder is the problem with oils , but if their in tubes they are safe unless you consume them. Why am I smelling fumes then? .Do we have to be concerned about the fumes when we open the container? I don’t remember if you mentioned in your safety video.

      You’re probably smelling linseed oil. As long as you’re not using solvents there shouldn’t be anything else in them. The problem with oils is solvent. Not the oils.

    when you work with a glass palett how do you cover your paint ?

    • @MaryGilkerson
      @MaryGilkerson  3 роки тому +1

      I don't use a glass palette ever, Danielle. Too heavy. But I'd cover it the same way I describe covering a plexiglass palette which is what I use.

      @@MaryGilkerson do you clean up plexiglass with turpentine?

    • @MaryGilkerson
      @MaryGilkerson  3 роки тому +1

      Nope. I scrape it down with a glass scraper and if there's any paint remaining, clean it with a natural household cleaning product called CitriSolve. It's nontoxic.
