Yes, Q*bert does indeed have a solenoid. I made mention of it in the video when I called it a "knocker". It's basically a pinball knocker. Its goes off everytime Q*Bert or Coily fall off the board.
Glad to see this game having gotten the attention it deserves, also crediting Warren. When I worked with him at Disney, he knew I was a part of the Mame team (Circa 1998!) and brought over a 3.5" diskette that contained the roms. I think he said there was only one other copy. In any case, that proliferated into the mame community and eventually, throughout the 2000s, tons of prototypes showed up. When I got those roms that day, all I had to do was rename them to the Mame naming spec and voila...
Very Cool John - I did not know about FHMC until watching your review. I just released Q*bert on the Steam platform with the original and new 3D version (currently on Steam and later mobile). I'm going to explore ways to include FHMC into future updates. Best, Robert
I was playing Q*bert earlier today on my mame cab, playing with a regular 4 way stick is not so hard, just takes some getting used to. I get my ass handed to me in regular Q*bert after about 3-4 levels, this FHMC version is nuts, lol

At the Midwest Gaming Classic, Jeff Lee himself stated this was actually the PROTOTYPE, not the sequel of Q*Bert. This was basically the original version of the game... the programmers envisioned a game that was a lot more difficult than the version ultimately released to the arcades.
Tim - that's absolutely not true, regardless of what Jeff may have said. You may have misunderstood, or he may have mis-spoken. In actuality, the original game was tuned a bit harder and faster than the way it was eventually released, but the progression of the levels and the additional elements in FHMC Q*B (ie. moving disks, Slick and Sam changing cubes to a pattern, Q*bertha) were all added after the original Q*bert was in production.
John you got your FACTS wrong the FHMC Qbert was presented first pre-production, but the POWERs of BE thought it was way too challenging so asked Warren the lead programmer to dummy it down for post-production.....😎👎

I recognized the flying disks that disappeared from a certain space. The green ball is Q'Bert's only salvation.

I find regular Q*bert harder than hell, that looks brutal! I really liked the bonus stages with the SC-01-A working overtime with all the voices.

I played this on Mame, and it's unbeatable. Q-bert can fall of a ledge from the middle of the playing field!
