Jet meet-up 2022. We fire up a few small turbine engines and a giant Concorde Olympus 593 engine. Special thanks to Adrian Bennett for hosting! www.jetpower.co.uk
Tremendous hobby, stationary engines mixed with ham stuff, tube amplifiers and a interesting job! Will you visit Nienen this week? Chapeau and best 73 pe1jas
@ Donald Connolly Also passing pigeons, small children, beer bottles, curious onlookers, litter and carelessly parked take-away meals etc. A sound investment.
Now imagine four of these... with reheat... Strapped to a delta-winged jet. The most glorious racket that you'll probably never hear again unless one of the heratige sites decides to fire theirs up. Sad and somewhat understandable for those who don't have much appreciation for such a marvel of engineering... Or who wish to maintain their hearing for any semblence of time!! XD
Never thought I'd hear an Olympus fire up. This is good enough for now, lol. I thank you madlads for doing this sort of thing. edit: how much torque do you think that Olympus was producing before he throttled it down? that was some insane body roll on that truck!
Check! The best place to test powerful jet-turbines is nearby a pile of barn and in any case of fire you have at least a little fire extinguisher. Very safe for sure ^^
Glad to see they had a safety guard around the intake on that Olympus engine, the suction area in front of a jet engine is much larger than a lot of people realise. There’s been a couple of incidents recently of a person getting ingested by engines in the USA, they merely walked too close to the intake of engines at idle and were whisked off their feet an got turned into ground mince in seconds. I did find it amusing when the APU started to move while it was running, certainly made the guy move! Can’t stress enough the need for care when running these things, I saw the result of an engine that grenaded a few years ago on a tractor pulling tractor. Apparently it wasn’t running quite right so they gave it some revs, the bearing that was starting to seize, seized and the whole thing exploded. The side of their transporter looked like it had been shot with a machine gun where the turbine blades had gone through. Fortunately nobody got hurt. But great video
I think I speak for everyone here in the comments section when I say how fast is that truck on the highway. So its three 593s and four reheat pipes short of Concorde type set up but that one engine isn't pushing 408,000 pounds of airplane around . I'm no aeronautical engineer but a well designed intake duct and a few aerodynamic modifications will get you close to mach 1 .
"Stop that! Stop that at once! Stop it! It's too loud, it's too silly, and you're having too much fun!" What was that, Colonel? "I SAID, STOP IT! YOU BOYS ARE HAVING FAR TOO - Oh, never mind..." 😁 (All credit to Graham Chapman of Monty Python's Flying Wotsit.)
@@mohammadwasilliterate8037 More the diameter I was shocked at...I wish I could have flown on it, I would have changed my never say fly policy for it! With the burners, it would blow the roof of the building behind I think! You have the BEST name, btw, I love it!
Zzz 😴 - cut the video right when startup fuel was turned on (skipped spool-up) - sounded like it was at idle the whole time afterwards also. Expensive hobby? Sure. But what’s the point of you aren’t going to run it?
So lucky to have been able to fly on a Concorde, it was an amazing experience even though I was a kid and it was loud as shit and the seats were kinda uncomfortable but holy shit that thing was fast lol.
I thought these turbine engines drew in massive amounts of air to function. How come it didn’t suck in the rear panel of the truck to operate? Probably a stupid question but what do I know? 😮
So how much pressure and flow, does the air starter use or need. I guess its more on volume as those 'canvas' hoses wouldnt be able to take too much pressure? The air starter motor is a small pnematic rotating motor, right (not a small turbine). I guess you cant just feed the air to the main engine turbine to spin it up, as not high enough quantity or 'speed' ?
@@thewtf It wouldn't be possible to run the 593 at much above idle - and certainly not with reheat (please don't insult the engine by using that Americanism 'afterburner'). The engine doesn't have its jetpipe and variable nozzle arrangement, which were airframe mounted. PS I was a member of the team at Bristol, which kept the Concorde engines turning and burning.
We ran up a Concord Olympus engine on the test bead at Farnborough as a Science"Day out" from Farnham College. It had a 90 degree concrete defector behind it to reduce noise but apparently it could still be heard 4 miles away !. I was in tasked with recording its "Fuel burn rate" from a "Fuel board" that consisted of lots of various sized large containers mounted to a 60 foot long board. You could inject a "bubble" in at the start of the fuel feed and track its progress through the various containers as they were all transparent. On after-burner the "bubble" went through the containers too fast to operate the stop-watch!. Even at full throttle the fuel burn was insane. They even ran up the supersonic wind tunnel with the concord in it to show the "shock waves". The aperture area was 4" x 4" and the compressed air was gone in seconds despite the air tank being the size of a house,
Love this stuff. How sad am I ?? At 7:40 the engine shutdown caused the truck to rock noticeably. Is that torque, gyroscopic or the minute amount of friction times a million coming off. I know a lot of stuff about older aircraft ((identification and history (amateur)) but where this stuff is concerned I'm a knuckle dragging ape !!
Used to see concord take off from Heathrow and fly over Maidenhead quite low and it's a sight and sound I'll never forget but so wished I could experience it again.
@@thewtf Yes a silage clamp. Pretty much non-flammable. No doubt the truck parked there incase the park brake fails whilst the 593 is producing thrust. Good safety policy!

i take it the intake screen is there to stop it from vacuumng up the family dog or cat

Used to maintain the marinized version of the Olympus (TM3B) back in my Navy days. Love the noise.

when french and brits put their pride aside and work together to produce the most elegent and fastest airliner ever made =)
Sat on top of 4 Olympus in 1992. Jesus the acceleration was something else.
What wonderful MADNESS! Makes me want to buy an old f4 j79 engine that got me out of trouble a lot and mount it on a trailer

Another superb episode, makes me wonder just how quick they truck would go 🤔
NCC-1701? Warp speed, mate! 🙂
U know he has tried it I bet it pulls so hard it's scary!!

The concorde engine is beautifully mounted
That was beautiful, I wish I could have been there!
im. amaxzed the truck doesnt fly off
Thanks God this Olympus 593 is able to be supercruise:)
Super Cool stuff I am also an airline Technician thanks for sharing ✈️. New Subscriber 🎣 🚤🤜🤛✈️💯
Luckily the girl was smarter than the adult and kept her earmuffs on. Too young to blow her air drums apart!
I can't believe how small the Olympus engine is relatively...I expected it to be twice the diameter.
Ya me too, but thinking back to the Concorde video's it's a small plane inside, plus the afterburner nozzle is removed.....

Imagine the concorde motor on full thrust
That truck like Star Trek number
NCC-1701😂
Awesome torque the Concorde engine produces on deceleration when the power is off loaded as it rocks the whole lorry from side to side👍👍
Lorry lol
I love it. "NCC-1701" is the registry number of the Enterprise in the Original Star Trek 😍
Great to see you and your cool stuff! Thanks for sharing.
Now hit the heaters! Viola! Flying lorry!
Appears as though someone forgot to invite James May !
Excellent boost for overtaking !
i like what i see, but the neighbors must go nuts when you run the big jet engines, up, keep up the good work,
Yeeees Very Gudd

When are we going to see a Concorde engine grilling a steak?
Probably not for a while Neil… In the opening sequence I got my head grilled!!

Why's the bald guy next to the kid have halve his clam shell on? Is he "mr.cool" jet guy or something?
Leave him alone. He likes being deaf in one ear…😂
Awesome!
WOW!! Incredible piece of kit how far can you power this beast up before it starts wanting to move?
the olympus is like the afterburning version of the conway
What ever will happen to these old engines? Are they just for hobbyists and enthusiasts to fire up once in awhile to admire?
The only thing i notice is the great wall of HAY just ready to catch fire should a problem arrise.
Presumably the handbrake was on? How do you get on with your neighbours?
The most amazing turbojet engine ever made!!!
Hearing just one engine! Can’t imagine the shear power 3 more made, unreal!
With afterburners
Such a genius machine.
Awesome Video
Stand behind a jet engine eflux.........so clever .......
Now that was a cool video! 😎
Hello this is BA we want our motor back
How far open did you get the 593?
What does it cost to buy a Concorde engine?
Assuming the RB211 is still around, it would be awesome to see it inside a proper engine pen and taken to full throttle to hear the roar
Yes indeed, it was only at idle when we ran it… even better if we could run it with the afterburner!!

Wait. An RB211 with a burner can?
@@grahamj9101 agree 100%
Lol running Jet turbines in a bunk, Ha!
Where do you find a Concirde engine?
Where does one get a hold of a Concord jet engine.
Might as well as hook up the afterburner for more fire breathing power
You’ll need a bigger rig for that because it would need the jet pipe and the primary exhaust nozzle.
There’s one for sale on eBay, but it will cost you nearly £600,000.
Is there any chance you'll ever get an SR-71 engine?
Be a pig to source the fuel I think. It wasn't your usual jp11 stuff
To get a SR71 engine is the minor problem.
Main problem is, that the special fuel JP-7 is no longer available.

Correct, it's the torque and inertia of the engine being off loaded of power, its great stuff👍👍
torque, or how i call it, tromnque
NCC-1701 ftw :3

Interesting location…jet engines, jet fuel and a large hay/straw storage nearby but a fantastic RR Olympus engine. 😀
I like how the guy only puts hearing protection on when it's in high power then takes them off. Probably already has shot hearing
Thats ace is the truck just for static running of the engine or for running would be ace to see the truck with the engine run down santa pod 😀
Static running for the moment. Truck not really suitable for jet runs!!
Do you have any long term plans for the engine
turbine"sare great engines I was usaf and worked on theGETf39 another huge engine!
WTF... What The F???
aaand fade to sky
Ncc 1701 lol
What would happen if you run it at 7000 rpm?
Be a pretty fast truck with the brakes off , great video
Strewth.
Why are they running on the dirt?
Awww no re-heat? :)
You edited the startup 😥
Damn that’s cool!
You wouldn't want that concord engine to get out of hand parked in front of a barn full of hay,
Its not hay

Proof the “concord” engine actually powered a concord on intercontinental flights and hasn’t just been a model it’s entire life?
Nothing like seeing $$ going up in smoke and not seeing hardly anything move!!
