Colin Hay was born & raised in Scotland until he was 14 when he & his family moved to Australia. He has had a hugely successful life in Australia & is very grateful to Australia & the opportunities it gave him. He still though, retains his Scots accent. 💙 Braw lad!
To my ears, his accent sounds like a mix of one of the Australian dialects and Lowland Scots. For the longest time, and before I learned he was born in Scotland and emigrated to Australia when he was 14, I always had trouble placing his accent, wondering if it was an Australian dialect I'd never heard before.
As an Aussie I love that so many people around the world still embrace this song.. It really is as much of an Aussie icon as Mick Dundee, Steve Irwin and vegemite sandwiches 😂

Good on you mate. I am an Aussie, and went to Gallipoli in '82 and was most impressed by your president's epilogue that said to Australia "you sons that lie here are our sons too" What a man he must have been, because it was us, as British "canon fodder", invaded your country. It's something we should regret, not celebrate. Anyhow you certainly were the victors.

When I was a young kid, more often I would hear songs before seeing what the singers look like.. anyway, I thought Colin was a black dude with his vocal colour haha. He has such a unique voice.
I noticed that most of the audience seems to be under the age of 50. I think it’s great that there is a younger generation that appreciates this music. I had the good fortune of growing up in the 1970’s and 1980’s. What great times those were.

What an honour to play with Colin Hay! Quick story: When I was in grade 8 in 1981, I remember going to the local record store and buying the Men At Work album "Business As Usual" On the city bus going home, I read that album cover over and over... man this song takes me back! Great job with the flute at the beginning and throughout!
I went to sing this in a covers band and found myself going WTF. Vocal is amazing and the record is so good you don’t realise. I thought I was just in the wrong key, wrong octave or had gone tone deaf 🤦♂️
@@tageast148 Indeed. I hear this song often when playing a Men At Work greatest hits CD. (a housekeeping ritual) Yes, the Lady totally nailed the flute bits! Closer to the original track than some may realize, too.
I disagree. I think this flute performance is BETTER than the original. Love that she gets creative with some notes and makes it her own. What any good musician would do when doing a cover.
