This is my favorite song of all time. I suffer from treatment-resitant major depression, and this is the ONLY sound that can break through my prison. Seeing all the people enjoying it makes me smile, which is a rare thing for me.
Colin Hay was born & raised in Scotland until he was 14 when he & his family moved to Australia. He has had a hugely successful life in Australia & is very grateful to Australia & the opportunities it gave him. He still though, retains his Scots accent. 💙 Braw lad!
To my ears, his accent sounds like a mix of one of the Australian dialects and Lowland Scots. For the longest time, and before I learned he was born in Scotland and emigrated to Australia when he was 14, I always had trouble placing his accent, wondering if it was an Australian dialect I'd never heard before.
As an Aussie I love that so many people around the world still embrace this song.. It really is as much of an Aussie icon as Mick Dundee, Steve Irwin and vegemite sandwiches 😂

I went to sing this in a covers band and found myself going WTF. Vocal is amazing and the record is so good you don’t realise. I thought I was just in the wrong key, wrong octave or had gone tone deaf 🤦♂️
When I was a young kid, more often I would hear songs before seeing what the singers look like.. anyway, I thought Colin was a black dude with his vocal colour haha. He has such a unique voice.

Quick story: When I was in grade 8 in 1981, I remember going to the local record store and buying the Men At Work album "Business As Usual" On the city bus going home, I read that album cover over and over... man this song takes me back! Great job with the flute at the beginning and throughout!

My brain somehow filled in notes that you didn't play, and pieced together the original solo the first time through. Once I listened again, I was impressed with how seamlessly you blend the "new" solo with the feeling of the original. You're blessed with talent, and with the opportunity to have played with Colin.
