Why do I feel like Amaterasu is that kind of a woman who's just tired with her brother's shit and she simply wants to rule in peace? I mean, I relate to her so much.
I am Japanese. I would like to point out one big mistake: in Shinto, "kegare" does not mean childbirth or menstruation itself (kegare directly translates to dirty), but rather the flow of blood and fatigue in menstruation and childbirth. In Shinto, there is something called "Ki". In Shinto, there is something called "Ki". Ki is like a life force, and when that life force is diminished, it is called kegare. This is true not only for childbirth and menstruation, but also for ordinary injuries and illnesses. I am not good at English, so I may be wrong.
So in the Old Testament of the Bible (Leviticus), there is serious mention of women's menstruation as being "unclean" (dirty) and that it is impure and you should not lay with a woman who is experiencing her period - lest you also become impure (in the evening, or something - you'd have to read it for yourself, it's written in that Shakespearean "needs an entire page of annotation to understand" lawl). I just found it interesting that these concepts seem to be recurring across religions and cultures (and languages). Because everyone hates women - lawl. I'm sorta kidding, but come on that's a pretty messed up, right? I read a Quora answer about it where the responder legit compared it to people with *leprosy* - like, not to hate on lepers but there's definitely a difference between leprosy and a women having her period, right? Or is that just me?
I haven't had homework in 23 years 🖤. And the Ainu had a thing for bears. Not something I want that close to any tender bits.... The pumpkin head is a nice touch. Enjoyed the vid!
The Ainu kept bears as pets sometimes, and yes, they even breastfeded them. At least they didn't buttfeed them, like *some kami* (looks at Ukemochi-no-kami)
The Ainu used to keep bears as pets, and they’d keep them for a while, until they were eventually sacrificed in order to release the spirit of the bear. These supposed spirits were called Kamuy, and similar to Shintō, the Ainu people believed that everything in nature was to be possessed by said Kamuy
This was informative and kind of hilarious. The answer to the question is bears. They usually kidnapped cubs kept them for one or two years then killed them in a ritual. They were also considered to be gods.
"Would you eat food that came from a goddess's butt?" I would eat the goddess's butt instead. Btw at 2:52, I get the wheat and red beans stand for, but what about soybean?

Thank you so much for you effort and contribution to the mythological story hub!
I think an idea within the myth is the idea of all the good things that came from her had she not died there would have been so much more things she could have made. But we missed out on that because of divine wrath and narrow mindedness.
The Ainu kept bears as pets, even breastfeeding them. They made good luck charms looking like bears because they and the bears shared a deep, intertwined relationship much like how we see dogs and humans together today. There were even ceremonies dedicated to bears!
*The Ainu Kept bears as pets and even breastfed them!!* Ainu believed Kami inherited many forms and the most important were bears. They sometimes even treated them better than their own children. The problem I've always had with such interpretations of natural female functions is that they demean women, without whom male priests wouldn't exist.

Pigs were buttfed in many parts of asia. Remember seeing the Korean toilets built on pigstys? That was not just them as far as I know
And them Tsukuyomi lived his whole life with a bunch of bunnies.

Same here. It's just a natural way of reproducing after all.
Fermented soy beans is a dish called natto, I think. It supposedly tastes better than it smells. Make of that what you will.

Lesson learned from Amaterasu: Brothers are a pain in the ass
Too bad my parents didn't see it that way and I'm the youngest lol
As a brother who has brothers, I can confirm this.
If they would had seen it that way and wanted to avoid brothers 😎since you are youngest you wouldn't be born at all nor this comment
In the Nihon Shoki, there's also a version that assigns:
Amaterasu -> Heavens
Tsukuyomi -> Ocean
Susanoo -> The world (I assume this means land)
I'm always amused by the million different versions of stories they put in there

They just couldn't *bear* the thought of not having one around.

The question gave me paws... and I could bear-ly remember but the Ainu had a thing for Bears....
