I took my Canon Rebel T8i back to Best Buy today and exchanged it for the A6400, mostly because of your advice so I thank you since I am convinced I will absolutely love it. I'm a scuba diver so I've been stuck on the GoPro Hero for the past 5 years since I first went scuba diving, but decided it wasn't going to cut it now that I am going to be utilizing my Adobe Premiere abilities to make my own music videos and I had loved the Canon Rebel my friends had a decade back. Not knowing they cropped the sides in 4K. But it took ordering a DJI RSC 2 and the Rebel T8i not being listed in the compatibility section to get me to pull the trigger within my return timeframe. So thanks again for helping me make the (right) decision!
Is there a noticeable difference between field of view between APS-C and full frame? I need to get full body shots and it seems like it would be easier with full frame, but not sure if it's worth the difference in cost. Thanks!
@@emmanuelbarboza7347 what will you be doing with it? filmmaking? photography? if you're a full time and wanna be a filmmaker get the Gh5 Panasonic, it blows both a6400 and the A7iii with IBIS and 4k/60fps. if you're hybrid then a7iii is not a bad option but you don't have that sweet versatile flip screen nor that 4k/60fps.

Whereas the a7iii nailed focus on his face and the background is slightly out of focus. Not sure what settings he is using and if the is typical behavior of the camera just pointing it out. I have both, I bought the a7 III first and after 2 years of sitting on the shelf I bought the a6400 and carry it with me all the time. The A7 III is great, but it's big and heavy. The A6400 fits in your pocket and does the same service. I've wanted a full frame all my life and when I have one I'm too lazy to wear it. Definitely the A6400 for me.
The a7iii has Ibis... And the best lens for Sony Apsc (Sigma lenses) doesn't have oss. It's pretty important on video, low light photography and long expo shots.
I got the a6400 and already got to use it on a professional video shoot, its amazing!!! one thing thought, you said it has a backside illuminated sensor, I think the sensor is not backside illuminated.
I agree, if you don't need full frame, the a6400 with the f1.4's can do a lot! I know some Fuji pros and their work looks incredible APS-C wise. The a6400 is a baby a7iii without IBIS and weather sealing.
I am using the Sony A6400 together with a Sony 100-400mm 4.5-5.6. And this combo brings you effectively to 600mm 5.6. - at 24MP. am deeply into Wildlife and this helps me really a lot, the images are sharp and the Autofocus (both acquisition and tracking) is simply mind blowing. If I put my Sony A9 on the same lens I have to crop bringing me down to 10MP only when having the same FOW as with the Sony A6400. So for me the A6400 is a great addition to my Full Frame combo for Wildlife.
If you have the budget for only one versatile lens for a6400, which one will give you the best possible quality in studio portrait photography, sport photography, as well as low light filming? The only thing I know for sure, you nedd OSS lens for a6400, right?
The picture quality (especially in 1080p) is night and day, A7 iii has a pro-quality not seen in my a6600 or a6400... regardless of compression, you can see there’s a clear difference in UA-cam projects A6400 vs A7iii.. I would upgrade but the A7 IV is so close
For anyone considering this camera the overheating issue has NOT been resolved. I upgraded my a6300 because I was told the a6400 does not overheat that is a LIE. The a6400 WILL overheat which happened to me during a gig where I had to record 12 minutes continuously outside in the shade! My a6400 turned off after 5 minutes and 12 seconds the client was beyond furious as this was a one tale type of deal for a product. If you’re inside AC doing UA-cam videos great but if you’re thinking about using this for professional work get the a7iii the bigger body handles heat MUCH better. I have since sold my a6400, just food for thought.

Hello The Everyday Dad. I just want to start a part time business on wedding videography. Now I considering either want to choose Sony Alpha a6400 or Sony Alpha a7 II. Would you please give me an insight which one better to choose to start with. And also which lenses I can choose for better option. Many thank in return for your help.
Ok big question now that you’re like, close to a pro photographer ;) do you feel like the a6400 can be a professionally used photography camera? Other than sensor size is there even a major difference?
For photography you can't really put them against each other. If you're a pro that wants a full-frame look, only full-frame will do. If you're not a pro, and just want a great camera, then you'll do well with an a6400. That being said I know pros who shoot video and stills with lesser cameras.
I pity those who just watch this video alone and conclude to buy the A6400. Both cameras are great but they are supposed to be used for different scenarios. You really need to look at the benefits of the A7iii: Dual SD card slot, better low light, full frame sensor and sensor stabilization...especially!
People know those things, but what you listed make almost zero sense for the audience for which the video is intended. Dual card slots in a day and age when flash memory failure is almost unheard of anymore, full frame for video is usually quite pointless (most professional video cameras are Super 35), low light capability is almost on par, and the difference negligible with Sony's crap CODEC anyway, IBIS is hardly a solution to shaky video, and if you're a photographer you buy longer focal lengths with OSS anyway.
I’m wanting to get the a6400 bc of the price, and I can get the main lenses I would need with it. Or I could wait and get the a73 or maybe the 4. But I’d have to wait maybe 6-8 months for that. But the 6400, I could get that within a month or two. My main questions is I’m wanting to use this as a hybrid camera. So I can do good stills. And video. Did I hear you right that you said that photo is not up to par on the 6400?
What if I could get a brand new A73 for $1500 and I wanted to pair it with my other A73 for mostly interviews and video work? I'm thinking at some point they will release a firmware update that unlocks unlimited record times correct? Or would it be better to get the A6400? Full disclosure my wife has an A6400 for her blog but I do more professional work so I thought it would be good to have 2 matching cameras.
1. because it cost 600$ more than the A6400 2. you just can't track thing at 120fps, the AF is still pretty darn good 3. there's no benefit to do external recording on pretty much every Sony camera .. except not loosing face tracking.
Then my suggestion would be make a video and show us all how it’s done. I’m not being sarcastic or snarky here either, if you think we are missing stuff make a channel and get the correct information out there.
Hi there awesome video, I would like to buy the Sony a 6400 what is your suggest for a good lens? I don’t know if I had to pick up the 18-105 f4 o the 30mm f1.4?
Great video. Thank you. Do you think the 6400 is a reasonable price for a smaller Channel around 2,000 subscribers, or is it still too expensive for that?
I happen to have both. The A7iii is HEAVY compared to the a6xxx series. I use the A7iii more for photography, or if I’m going to do tripod style videos all day (better battery life). But for walk around, vlog, and just almost anything else, the a6400 size is just better and easier to use. I’m definitely considering selling the a7iii now that I finally got the a6400. Hmmmmm....
Daniel Constant I like the a7iii mostly for its bigger size, speed, buttons and other features for photography especially for event or music/band photos. Image quality between the two is close enough for me, but the a7iii has the edge in low light. I used a 6500 before and the photos were definitely acceptable for what I do. (Product photos for small company, for web and basic small prints for brochures etc). So the 6400 would work well enough too. But there is definitely “something” about the a7iii for non-controlled photog situations.
@@DanielConstant00 no prob. i actually took the a6400 to a shoot last night, live band, dark stage. technically the camera worked very well. but physically i immediately missed the range of controls on the A7iii. the few more buttons, ease of selecting focus points with the joystick, etc. once i got a workflow for the a6400, it was ok (figuring things out on the fly haha), but definitely a bit slower than the A7iii, and that's when you can miss shots for this situation. so yeah it's more the usability for fast-changing situations that the A7iii would be a better choice. for me with my opinion, of course.
Hi everyone. I did my first real shoot with a7iii firmware 3.00 last night. Everything felt so slow: change focus points, Fn menu, some menus... It’s been a while but I remember the iii feeling way more snappy. I also shot the a6400 as well and it seemed to be faster for the same functions. Again, the iii used to feel super quick, but last night moving focus points with the joystick, i would press the stick and the point would move almost one full second later. Super sluggish. Anyone else have issue with 3.00? I don’t remember it feeling like this before the update.
It's weird but true that you can't find a compare VDO for A73 with A6400. Thanks for making this :D if you don't mind please make another one regarding photography capability. Many people mention about the color science that's been upgraded from A6300. So I would like to see if there is a significant changes there. Cheers!
The color in the a6400 and A7III are now the same if you plan to use out of camera color. As far as photography, the only decision you need to make is whether you want the full frame look, take full advantage of full frame lenses, or carry all that bigger full-frame gear. Dynamic range, and low light arguments when you're likely shooting RAW are a bit moot.
Skip the 6400. I'm returning mine. If you do video or photography professionally, just expense another FF camera to your business. IMHO 6400 was made for occasional shooters and vloggers.
I was torn between this and the a6500...mainly cause of IBIS...but I think I’ll get the a6400 since it’s cheaper and I can just use the difference towards the 18-105mm it a gimbal for cinematic shots
Dont buy an a7ii its like throwing your money away you will be disappointed. For 1200 the a6400 is an insane deal. Or just splurge and get the a7iii. Stay away from a7ii lol.
With all due respect, the A6400 is NOT better than the A7III. I own the A7III and I owned the A6400 for like a week. Until I decided to just get a second A7III. The A7III is a better camera due it the in body stabilization and the fact its full frame. Not to mention he battery like. I went on a 3 day shoot recently and I had 3 batteries. I used 2. Never touched the 3rd or the charger and I shoot in 4k @ 24 FPS. Well worth the extra cash. APS-C cameras aren't bad, but full frame is the way to go!
Totally agree with you. For vlogs and non professional uses the a6400 is fine but doesn't quite cut it for paid gigs. The a7iii is where it's at. I'm gonna return the 6400 before the 14 day return period is up... currently debating on another a7iii or going big with the a9.
drummerdude several reasons. If you’re shooting a wedding and your camera breaks, you can finish the job with the same camera and the same quality. For me personally, I want one to stay in my studio set up for filming at all times and one, possibly 2 in my bag at all times. Redundancy
@@drummerdude100 Aside from the reasons listed from M30 media. I usually have 3 camera bodies on me when I shoot weddings and events. I use two of the bodies and have the third one as a backup. It's great to be able to have one camera with a 24-70mm and the other with a 70-200mm lens to get a variety of shots. Even for engagement shoots, to speed up my workflow I'll have one body using a 35mm and the other using an 85/135mm lens. The time it takes to switch a lens out of a camera means having to work with the client to get them back into the mindset.
That does make a lot of sense. I’m just getting into film and photography and have seen a few people mentioning owning 2+ of the same camera. Thanks for answering.
This is great. The only thing stopping me from selling my a7iii and buying the 6400 is low light performance. Can you PLEASE do some side by side night time video with these two? Pretty please?🙏😊🖤
Why would you? the a7iii is better. The 6400 is amazing because it performs almost the same for half the price. I will upgrade to the a6400 because of the price and I already have great apsc lenses so going full frame would be too expensive

My main questions is I’m wanting to use this as a hybrid camera. So I can do good stills. And video. Did I hear you right that you said that photo is not up to par on the 6400?
Your fantastic autofocusing a6400 was out of focus around 5:24 . Great.....and you people beat the crap out of canon...
🙄
Hey Dad, what about lowlight recording? comparable?
What if I could get a brand new A73 for $1500 and I wanted to pair it with my other A73 for mostly interviews and video work? I'm thinking at some point they will release a firmware update that unlocks unlimited record times correct? Or would it be better to get the A6400? Full disclosure my wife has an A6400 for her blog but I do more professional work so I thought it would be good to have 2 matching cameras.
Why Doesn't anyone talk about
1. Xt3 vs a6400
2.120 fps af in a6400
3. External recording on a6400?
1. because it cost 600$ more than the A6400
2. you just can't track thing at 120fps, the AF is still pretty darn good
3. there's no benefit to do external recording on pretty much every Sony camera .. except not loosing face tracking.
@@JetBen555 i meant xt30. Sorry! 🙏
@@abrarfaiyaz2339 gerald undone and everyday dad both did a fair comparison between the xt30 and a6400.
@@JetBen555 teds one is bit of a toss up and Gerald undone, he's crazy, can't take his word
Then my suggestion would be make a video and show us all how it’s done. I’m not being sarcastic or snarky here either, if you think we are missing stuff make a channel and get the correct information out there.
Not even going to lie, the first clips looked exactly the same
I said the exact same thing.
Hi there awesome video, I would like to buy the Sony a 6400 what is your suggest for a good lens? I don’t know if I had to pick up the 18-105 f4 o the 30mm f1.4?
Hello, just purchased Sony a6400. Can you help me selecting lens? I own a 16-50mm kit lens only. Should I buy 16/56mm Sigma or Sony 18- 105 lens?
Great video. Thank you. Do you think the 6400 is a reasonable price for a smaller Channel around 2,000 subscribers, or is it still too expensive for that?
I happen to have both. The A7iii is HEAVY compared to the a6xxx series. I use the A7iii more for photography, or if I’m going to do tripod style videos all day (better battery life). But for walk around, vlog, and just almost anything else, the a6400 size is just better and easier to use. I’m definitely considering selling the a7iii now that I finally got the a6400. Hmmmmm....
So in the aspects that you use your A7iii for photography. Do you feel comfortable the A6400 is good enough to replace that
Daniel Constant I like the a7iii mostly for its bigger size, speed, buttons and other features for photography especially for event or music/band photos.
@@ImChrisLuke Thanks that helps alot
@@DanielConstant00 no prob. i actually took the a6400 to a shoot last night, live band, dark stage. technically the camera worked very well. but physically i immediately missed the range of controls on the A7iii. the few more buttons, ease of selecting focus points with the joystick, etc. once i got a workflow for the a6400, it was ok (figuring things out on the fly haha), but definitely a bit slower than the A7iii, and that's when you can miss shots for this situation. so yeah it's more the usability for fast-changing situations that the A7iii would be a better choice. for me with my opinion, of course.
How is the low light of the 6400? Compared to the lowlight of the A73?
How noisy is the kit lens if using a Rode mic. Can it be picked up when in AF. This is on my list for outdoors content. Good video brother!
I haven’t tried it yet but you can’t hear the autofocus in the kit lens if that’s what you’re asking.
@@TheEverydayDad Yes and thanks.
Hi, are you sure its the same sensor on A7 III and the Sony 6400? I have a 6400. Would like to know if its the same sensor on the A7 III
How do you manage to do the videos which I always try to search on UA-cam and then finally end up finding them on your chanell! ❤️
Is this still true with ZV e10 and A7iv? Stuck between the 2...
What about a7r iii? Which one is better ?
Only thing about the a6400/6500 is the rolling shutter in video. One reason why I sold my 6500... otherwise it’s pretty good! Keep up the good work!
SeeYee Xiong it’s better in 1080p
@@chosenideahandle thanks now I have made the decision and I have the A7iii already. I feel that I have made the right decision. :D
@@poom_laupat I don't think you can go wrong either way if you can afford it. They're both great cameras for video or photography.
yoda man!!! one of my fave reviewers on the internet :)
Thanks for this Erryday Dad. I was on the fence about these two cameras. I will be using the video more than photos. Subscribing
On the a6400 the video vlogging test was clearly out of focus 🤔
Yeah it was on a gh5 with manual focus. It’s not a test of the a6400 it’s just a shot of me walking around with it.
The video is obsolete right now after fw3.0... BUT it would be nice to compare them after the new FW.
i enjoy my a7iii and have two lens (35/85) and wanting the get the a6400 but i primarily use my a7 for photos
That’s what I’d probably end up using my a7iii for.
@@TheEverydayDad mhm its light and compact enough also wished i bought the tamron 28-75 instead of my 35 but oh well
Skip the 6400. I'm returning mine. If you do video or photography professionally, just expense another FF camera to your business.
IMHO 6400 was made for occasional shooters and vloggers.
You have explained it all and well!!!
I was torn between this and the a6500...mainly cause of IBIS...but I think I’ll get the a6400 since it’s cheaper and I can just use the difference towards the 18-105mm it a gimbal for cinematic shots
Great stuff. Just subscribed. I like your style. Cheers, Cam
Good job! What was the audio recording level on the Sony A7III? Sounds good.
Which lense would you recommend I use to video tape Song Covers and Music Performances with on the a6400?
The problem with the a6400 is if you want 4K 30 FPS, it crops down the sensor a lot. You only get the full APS frame if you shoot 24 FPS.
It crops by 1.1 times. So yes it’s there but it’s not much.
I have sony a6300 and sigma 30mm f1.4, i planned to sell it and buy a7ii. what do you think ?
Dont buy an a7ii its like throwing your money away you will be disappointed. For 1200 the a6400 is an insane deal. Or just splurge and get the a7iii. Stay away from a7ii lol.
@@HeroShotz so the a6400 with kit lens is better than a7ii ?
@@RandyWaluyaNugraha yes, anything is better than getting stuck with an already obsolete camera.
just the video i was waiting!!!
Why would you buy two of the same camera? Just curious.
drummerdude several reasons.
Is it still worth it today in mid-2021?
This is great. The only thing stopping me from selling my a7iii and buying the 6400 is low light performance. Can you PLEASE do some side by side night time video with these two? Pretty please?🙏😊🖤
+1

Why would you? the a7iii is better. The 6400 is amazing because it performs almost the same for half the price. I will upgrade to the a6400 because of the price and I already have great apsc lenses so going full frame would be too expensive
Also low light performance on full frame will always be way better than a crop sensor one
Marcelo Mur except for vlogging size.
What lenses are you using for vlogging on the 6400? Sorry if I missed that previously.
Great review! Just a question.. can the battery be charged when in use like the A7iii?
I just love your videos dude
I need a camera for just photos and no video. I'm torn between the A6400 with some prime sigma lenses or A7iii with the Tamron 28-75. Which do I go for?
Full frame camera always better for photos. If u have the money buy the a7iii
